Apollo Pharmacy, the country's largest branded drug retail network with over 1,500 outlets, has temporarily suspended sale of medicines manufactured by Ranbaxy Laboratories [ Get Quote ]. It has also stopped further procurement from the company for now. "Our medical committee, which is a very strong committee within Apollo, has reviewed the matter and recommended, as a cautionary measure, we should temporarily suspend sale of Ranbaxy medicines, as we cannot take a chance with patients' safety. So, we have immediately issued an advisory to our pharmacies," Apollo Hospitals [ Get Quote ] Executive Director Shobana Kamineni told Business Standard. She added Apollo had sent a questionnaire to Ranbaxy seeking details, including re-certification of the existing stock and test reports for other medicines. "We have nothing against Ranbaxy but we must respect what our medical committee has ordered We have asked them (Ranbaxy) to re-certify whatever stocks we have till now. FDA finds fungus in drugs from Tennessee pharmacy

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal health officials say they have found bacteria and fungus in drug vials from a Tennessee specialty pharmacy that recalled all of its injectable medicines last month. The Food and Drug Administration said in an online posting Friday that it identified the growths in two unopened vials of a steroid injection distributed by the Main Street Family Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy in Newbern, Tenn. The agency said it is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify the exact species of fungus and bacteria. State and federal officials began investigating the pharmacy last month after seven patients in North Carolina and Illinois reported skin abscesses after being injected with methylprednisolone acetate, a steroid used to treat inflammation, joint pain and respiratory issues. The same steroid was involved in a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak last year that has killed 58 people and sickened more than 740 others. The FDA said it is not aware of any cases of meningitis associated with Main Street Family Pharmacy's products. Last month the pharmacy recalled its entire stock of sterile products manufactured after Dec. 6, 2012. A spokesman for the Main Street Family Pharmacy said its owners are aware … Continue reading

Mayo Clinic Finds Promising Results in Minimally Invasive Brain Surgery for Epilepsy

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013

Released: 6/6/2013 12:00 PM EDT Source Newsroom: Mayo Clinic Newswise ROCHESTER, Minn. -- A new minimally invasive laser-based tool for epilepsy surgery offers a quicker recuperation time for patients than major surgery, Mayo Clinic researchers report. The research is ongoing, but preliminary results were recently presented at the American Academy of Neurology. MULTIMEDIA ALERT: For audio and video of Dr. Marsh talking about the technique as well as animation of the procedure, visit the Mayo Clinic News Network (http://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/). For more than 50 years, the standard effective treatment for medication-resistant epileptic seizures has been brain surgery. Neurosurgeons remove a small circle of the skull and probe into the brain to cut out or isolate the area where seizures are occurring. The operation, known as a temporal lobectomy, is effective in up to 80 percent of patients when the seizures are localized. The recuperation period can be lengthy, involving several days in the hospital and one to three months for the patient to return to ordinary activities. This new technique, which is available at Mayo Clinics Rochester and Jacksonville, Fla., campuses (and will soon be available at Mayo Clinic in Arizona), offers significant potential, says co-author W. Richard Marsh, M.D., a … Continue reading
