MS Dinner of Champions to honor/toast John Williamson on June 11

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013

John Williamson will receive the Silver Hope Award, the highest honor presented by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society on Tuesday, June 11 at Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke. A VIP reception for the honoree, co-chairs and vice chairs will begin at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., Williamson will be toasted by Warner Dalhouse, and Harvey Brookins will present the Silver Hope Award. Master of Ceremonies will be Nicholas Conte. The MS Dinner of Champions honors outstanding community leaders as it raises funds for MS research, advocacy, and regional programs, and provides public education about multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the body. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with the disease. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being … Continue reading

Researchers Offer Promising New Treatment for MS

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013

Researchers have developed whats being hailed as a breakthrough in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, a crippling autoimmune disease that attacks the outer sheath of nerve cells, eventually disabling many of those with the neurological condition. The new treatment involves sweeping away immune system cells responsible for MS. In multiple sclerosis, immune system white blood cells, called T cells, become misdirected, attacking the protective myelin sheath on the outside of nerve cells. In healthy individuals, T cells or leukocytes are responsible for destroying tumor cells or those infected with a virus. Myelin speeds the transmission of nerve impulses from the brain and spinal cord to limbs and the optic nerves, which also are insulated with myelin. When the myelin is destroyed, motor neuronal impulses are blocked, resulting in severe disability and blindness in many people with multiple sclerosis. Worldwide, an estimated 2.5 million people are affected by MS. U.S. and German researchers have developed a therapy that stops the autoimmune attack against myelin in its tracks without impairing the normal function of the immune system, according to Stephan Miller, a microbiologist and immunologist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Miller says the experimental treatment targets T cells in the brain … Continue reading

MS Treatment That Resets Immune System Shows Promise In Safety Trial

Current therapies for MS suppress the entire immune system, leaving patients more vulernable to everyday infections and higher rates of cancer. The results of the phase 1 trial showed the therapy was safe and well tolerated and also reduced immune system reactivity to myelin by 50 to 75%, say the researchers. "The therapy stops autoimmune responses that are already activated and prevents the activation of new autoimmune cells," says co-senior author Stephen Miller in a statement. Miller is the Judy Gugenheim Research Professor of Microbiology-Immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago in the US. As the myelin is gradually destroyed, patients experience symptoms ranging from mild numbness in the limbs to paralysis or blindness. In this study, the researchers used patients' own white blood cells to reset their immune system so it stops … Continue reading

Research offers hope to Ware mother and daughter

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013

10:15 Friday 07 June 2013 Written by CIARAN GOLD A TEENAGER suffering from a dehabilitating disease has been given hope her life will be extended significantly thanks to new research. Becky Goodwill, 17, of Fanshawe Crescent, Ware has Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T), which causes severe disability in children and significantly shortens lives. There is no effective treatment. But the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge believe they may be on the verge of a breakthrough using state-of-the-art genetic technology techniques. Professor Steve Jackson, who is heading up the research team, said: A-T is such a complex and devastating condition because people with it lack the ATM protein. It plays such a major role in ensuring the wellbeing of cells and the DNA they contain. Using a technique known as synthetic viability, the team will be looking to identify ways to correct cellular defects caused by mutations in the gene responsible for A-T. It is hoped this will open the door for therapeutic approaches for the condition. Pam, Beckys mother, said: When Becky was diagnosed (ten years ago) our lives changed immediately in a terrible and devastating way. Bureau Of Prisons Maintains "Gender Identity Disorder List" Of 61 Federal Inmates

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013

The Bureau of Prisons maintains a list of federal inmates classified as transgender, transsexual, or "gender identity disorder." The official "GID Inmates" list contains the names of 61 prisoners, their categorization, and location within the sprawling BoP system. Additionally, the two-page list notes that each of the inmates is undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The GID Inmates list, released by prison officials in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, does not identify the specific prisoners. Names and ID numbers were withheld since, prison officials concluded, such a release would be a privacy invasion and could endanger the lives of the inmates. The list includes specific categorizations such as transexualism, GID, and transgender. A prisoner at the Victorville, California lockup is listed as having Sexual DO NOS, a disorder not otherwise specified. The list does not specify the sexes of the 61 inmates, who are spread across dozens of BoP facilities. $150,000 donation to fund stem cell research

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013

A Newport Beach nonprofit donated $150,000 toward stem cell research that could slow or reverse heart damage in patients, including those with a specific muscular dystrophy condition, the organization announced last week. Coalition Duchenne gave the money to a Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute team developing a treatment that could help treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients who develop heart disease, according to a news release from the coalition. Boys with Duchenne are born with damage to their hearts that worsens over time, according to Dr. Ron Victor, associate director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. "If we can use stem cells to slow or stop heart damage, it could help stall progression of the disease," he said in a prepared statement. The institute's experimental treatment involves removing a raisin-size piece of heart muscle that is used to grow the stem cells. Researchers have seen an average 50% reduction in muscle damage following a heart attack when those cells are injected back into the patient, according to the release. "Each year, 20,000 boys are born with Duchenne," said Catherine Jayasuriya, who founded Coalition Duchenne in 2010 after her son was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy associated with the disease. "Many do not live into their 20s … Continue reading

Wolbachia Bacteria Evolved to Infect Stem Cell Niches Through Successive Generations of Their Hosts

Wolbachia-encoded factors control pattern of stem-cell niche tropism inDrosophila and favor infection Newswise Wolbachia are intracellular bacteria that infect invertebrates at pandemic levels, including insects that cause such devastating diseases as Dengue fever, West Nile virus, and malaria. While Wolbachia-based technologies are emerging as promising tools for the control of the insect vectors of these deadly diseases, the processes underlying Wolbachias successful propagation within and across species remain elusive.
