Singer targets stem cell donors

Mike Peters played at parliament as some MPs signed the donor register Mike Peters is a survivor. Lead singer of The Alarm since 1981, he's had 15 UK Top 40 hits and sold more than five million records. He's also a cancer survivor, twice, and in that role he came to parliament today as part of a drive to increase the number of stem cell donors. A day after receiving chemotherapy treatment near his home in north Wales, he headed to Westminster for the launch of "Get On The List", a campaign to recruit potential donors. MPs were targeted at a donor registration event in the hope that they would encourage others to register to help blood cancer patients. The campaign sees Peters' Love Hope Strength Foundation join forces with Delete Blood Cancer UK charity, which says that half the people in Britain who need a life-saving stem cell donor don't actually find a suitable match. People are realising that one day it could be someone that they know who needs a stem cell donor, The … Continue reading

West Palm Beach, Florida (PRWEB) June 04, 2013 Thirty days at an inpatient treatment center is rarely enough time to truly treat the physical, emotional and mental trauma that addiction can create. For many, they are only starting to reach a point of physical stability after 30 days. Recovery Associates Christian Drug Rehab Center wanted to offer clients a way to remain connected to a solid support system. While clients at Recovery Associates generally attend the program anywhere from three months to a year, the Alumni program offers graduates a way to stay part of Recovery Associates long after they complete treatment. Another benefit of the new Alumni Program is that it reminds clients what it means to really have fun again. For many addicts and alcoholics, they struggle with the idea of having sober funeven though partying (i.e. drinking and getting high) had stopped being fun a long time ago. Activities like fishing trips, scavenger hunts and volleyball tournaments help remind clients what it means to really enjoy life again. Cholesterol Drugs Linked to Muscle, Joint Problems: Study

Posted: Published on June 5th, 2013

By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter MONDAY, June 3 (HealthDay News) -- People taking statin drugs to lower their cholesterol may slightly increase their risk for muscle and joint diseases as well as strains and sprains, a new study suggests. Statins, such as Zocor and Lipitor, are widely used to reduce cholesterol levels and help prevent heart disease. But they're also thought to contribute to muscle weakness, muscle cramps and tendon problems. This new study, based on nearly 14,000 U.S. active-duty soldiers and veterans, confirmed an association between the drugs' use and musculoskeletal injuries and diseases. But the findings need to be replicated in other types of studies and should not deter people at risk of heart disease from taking the medications, said lead researcher Dr. Ishak Mansi, from the VA North Texas Health Care System in Dallas. "Do not stop taking statins; these medications have been life-savers for some patients," Mansi said. "But talk to your doctor about the benefit-risk ratio for you." Whether statins should be prescribed universally in people without risk factors for heart disease, as some in the health care field suggest, is another matter, Mansi said. "The side effects of statins are not totally known yet," … Continue reading

Drugs, guns charges after fatal crash

The driver of a car involved in the death of a pedestrian yesterday in Sydney's north has been arrested and charged with firearm, drug and property offences. Police say that an elderly pedestrian was killed after being hit by a vehicle on Willoughby Road, Willoughby. They say witnesses have told police a utility travelling north crossed a number of lanes of traffic before leaving the roadway. The vehicle hit a bin and street sign, before hitting a 74-year-old man. He suffered serious injuries and died at the scene. After the accident, the 31-year-old driver of the utility was detained by police for mandatory blood and urine testing. His mobile phone was also seized for examination. 'During the course of their inquiries, crash investigators became aware of a possible cache of firearms, weapons and cash at the 31-year-old's Coogee apartment,' police said in a statement. 'This information was referred to the State Crime Command's Firearms and Organised Crime Squad, who applied for and executed a search warrant at a property on Arden Street, Coogee. 'Inside the apartment, police found and seized firearms, ammunition, weapons, illicit drugs, steroids, approximately 200 pairs of brand new sports shoes, and protected wildlife, including snakes and … Continue reading

Amazon plans big expansion of online grocery business – sources

Posted: Published on June 5th, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc is planning a major roll-out of an online grocery business that it has been quietly developing for years, targeting one of the largest retail sectors yet to be upended by e-commerce, according to two people familiar with the situation. While food is a low-margin business, Amazon could outperform similar online grocery services by delivering orders for higher-margin items like electronics at the same time. One of the people familiar with AmazonFresh's expansion plans said new warehouses will have refrigerated areas for food, but also space nearby to store up to one million general merchandise products, in some cases. The company has been testing AmazonFresh in its hometown of Seattle for at least five years, delivering fresh produce such as eggs, strawberries and meat with its own fleet of trucks. Amazon is now planning to expand its grocery business outside Seattle for the first time, starting with Los Angeles as early as this week and the San Francisco Bay Area later this year, according to the two people who were not authorized to speak publicly. If those new locations go well, the company may launch AmazonFresh in 20 other urban areas in 2014, including some … Continue reading
