Sarasota’s Dr. Guy DaSilva Introduces Cutting-Edge Stem Cell Therapy For Degenerative Diseases

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2013

Sarasota, Florida (PRWEB) June 03, 2013 Guy DaSilva, MD, ABAARM, will begin conducting clinical trials for many degenerative diseases using adipose-derived stem cell therapy at the DaSilva Institute in Sarasota, Florida. The independent review board of the International Stem Cell Society will oversee the trials. Following the IRB-approved protocols, Dr. DaSilva will treat patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Type 2 Diabetes, osteoarthritis, critical limb ischemia and erectile dysfunction. Furthermore, Alzheimers disease, dementia and Parkinsons disease are pending approval, and approximately five new protocols are added each month. While stem cell therapy is most often associated with the controversial use of embryonic stem cells, Dr. DaSilva will be exclusively using adult autologous stem cells, harvested from the patients own adipose (fat) tissue or bone marrow if fat is not available. Because patients are receiving their own cells, there is no risk of rejection, and success rates are far greater compared to the more contentious therapies. Autologous stem cell therapy works by mimicking the bodys natural healing process, but at a more potent, concentrated level. Stem cells, which are unspecialized cells with the potential to develop into any cell, are stored throughout the body. When disease or injury strikes, … Continue reading

Propecia sales down; lawsuits continue; media cover side effects

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2013

Contributor (866) 529-2400 Faced with the 2013 onset of generic competition against its male pattern hair loss drug, Propecia (finasteride), Merck has experienced diminishing dollars while it has tried to make sense of the hundreds of Propecia lawsuits filed by men (and some spouses) who have suffered enduring erectile problems and related side effects since using the drug. Before the loss of market exclusivity became an issue, Merck saw its Propecia sales stagnate at $447 million in 2010 and 2011 and then decline to $424 million in 2012. As the Propecia patent has approached its October 2013 sunset, one generic competitor already has been allowed into the market in January and another will get the green light in July. Propecia sales in the first quarter of 2013 were down 37 percent to $68 million compared to the same period in 2012. The plaintiffs have shed no tears over Mercks Propecia sales losses. Realizing that their health suffered from an increased risk of severe Propecia side effects, about which the manufacturer should have known and warned about, these victims have hired counsel and have pursued recoverable damages. Actually, there are two Merck drugs involved in this sort of litigation. Proscar is … Continue reading

New drug shows promise for treating deadly skin cancer

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2013

London, June 3 (ANI): A new drug in preliminary tests has shown promising results with very manageable side effects for treating patients with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The results were presented at the 2013 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology today in Chicago by Dr. Antoni Ribas, professor of medicine in the UCLA division of hematology-oncology, who led the research. The results are from the first clinical trial of the drug lambrolizumab (MK3475), which was discovered and developed by Merck. Researchers analyzed 135 patients with advanced metastatic melanoma who were divided into three groups with different treatment regimens. Overall, 38 percent of patients taking lambrolizumab saw confirmed improvement of their cancer across all dose levels. Of those taking the lowest dose of lambrolizumab, 25 percent showed improvement, while 52 percent of those who received the highest dose improved. The rate of any tumor response across all patients was 77 percent. Researchers have not yet determined the average duration of response to the drug, because only five patients who had initial responses were taken off the study after their cancers got worse. To date, the longest response has been over one year. Side effects with lambrolizumab … Continue reading

FDA May Get Authority Over Compounding Pharmacies

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2013

(Memphis) Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now say there are 24 reported cases associated with suspect steroid injections made and shipped from Main Street Family Pharmacy in Dyer County. Thats up from 20 last week. The agency updated a page on its website late Monday that keeps track of whats now being called an outbreak. More than a week ago, information surfaced that revealed Main Street had shipped possibly tainted steroid injections to medical facilities in several states. The pharmacy has since voluntarily recalled more than 300 products. History of Problems for Main Street As federal and state health authorities search for the source of the problem, theres a national push for more regulation over compounding pharmacies. So what does that mean for the average consumer and their safety? It may sound fancy, but compounding pharmacies have been around for hundreds of years. Youre taking multiple ingredients and combining that into a product for the patient, explains Brett Wright, who runs Benevere Pharmacy in Collierville. Think of the days when your grandma got sick. There werent always pain medicines on shelf, so the pharmacist created something. Fast forward to today, and places like that still exist. … Continue reading
