New Anticancer Drug Shows Effect Against Deadliest Skin Cancer

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2013

Newswise Researchers from UCLAs Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center led by Dr. Antoni Ribas, professor of medicine in the division of hematology-oncology, report preliminary results showing significant antitumor activity with very manageable side effects from a new drug being tested in patients with advanced melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Ribas presented the results at the 2013 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology this morning in Chicago, and the study was published online ahead of press in The New England Journal of Medicine immediately afterward. The drug, lambrolizumab (also known as MK3475), discovered and developed by Merck, received Breakthrough Therapy designation from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April. Results These results are from the first clinical trial of lambrolizumab in patients with advanced melanoma and are based on analysis of 135 patients with metastatic melanoma who were divided into three groups with different treatment regimens. Overall, lambrolizumab resulted in 38% of patients having confirmed improvement of their cancer across all dose levels given. This ranged between 25% in patients who received the lowest dose, to 52% in patients who received the highest dose. The rate of any tumor response across all patients was 77%. … Continue reading

Approved drug 'doesn't help brain cancer'

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2013

A drug approved to treat brain tumors does not improve survival rates and should be dropped from initial treatment regimes because it also worsens side effects, a study found Sunday. Genentech's bevacizumab (Avastin) received approval from US drug regulators for the treatment of recurring brain tumors called glioblastoma, or GBM, after promising results from several clinical trials. However, a randomized trial of 637 patients found no difference in survival rates between those who took the drug to supplement their chemotherapy and those who took a placebo. "Unless we can identify a group of patients that clearly benefits from early use of bevacizumab, it appears that it should not be used in the first-line setting," said Mark Gilbert, a professor of neuro-oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. "Bevacizumab remains an important part of our armory against glioblastoma, but in most situations it should be reserved as a salvage regimen." While the patients who received the drug also showed more side effects -- particularly low platelet counts, blood clots and high blood pressure -- Gilbert said the increased toxicity would be acceptable if a survival benefit had been found. The phase III trial also concluded that … Continue reading

Merck's Anti-PD1 Melanoma Drugs Shrinks Tumors In Half of Patients

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2013

CHICAGO (TheStreet) -- Merck's (MRK) anti-PD-1 drug labrolizumab shrank tumors in 38 percent of advanced melanoma patients. At the best dose, 52 percent of the melanoma patients treated with the immune system-boosting drug experienced significant tumor shrinkage. Updated results from the early-stage study are being presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting and published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine. Lambrolizumab is Merck's strongly competitive answer to Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY) nivolumab. Both drugs work by dismantling a cloaking mechanism known as PD-1 used by cancer cells to hide from a patient's immune system. Roche (RHHBY) is developing a drug against a related target known as PDL-1. The tumors responses to these anti-PD-1 and PDL-1 drugs are among the strongest ever seen in melanoma clinical trials. The ASCO meeting is buzzing about the potential for this new class of drugs to dramatically improve treatment for melanoma patients. The drugs are active in lung, kidney and breast cancers. And that can be an especially big problem whensay you get behind the wheel of a car. Specifically the FDA says be cautious- these drugs can interfere with concentration, alertness, and attention span. Occasionally to the point- where you may not even realize that your brain is in slow motion Also a problem- side effects last well after the med has supposedly worn off- even into the next day Another point. Clare: Lorry crashes into pharmacy

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2013

The scene at Clare Pharmacy after a lorry struck the scaffolding on the front of the building. Lauren Everitt Friday, May 31, 2013 4:44 PM A lorry crashed into a pharmacy and scaffolding in a Suffolk town this morning. To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in. The incident took place in Well Lane, Clare, just after 8.50am, when the lorry collided with Clare Pharmacy, two other buildings and scaffolding. The road was closed for a couple of hours to allow the lorry to be recovered and to assess structural damage. A Suffolk police spokesman said: The scaffold was cleared, the buildings were okay and the road was opened by around 11.30am. A spokeswoman at the pharmacy said workmen had been called out and had taken down all of the 30ft high scaffolding and that they had closed the shop but had reopened by noon. There was also minor damage to the building. However, a campaign group trying to stop HGVs from driving through Clare has warned that an incident like this mornings was going to happen sooner or later but was relieved nobody was hurt. Ironically it was a Co-op vehicle which … Continue reading
