Drug Combo May Boost Melanoma Survival, Lessen Side Effects

Adding a white-blood cell boosting treatment from Sanofi (SAN) to Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY)s (BMY) melanoma drug Yervoy helped patients with advanced skin cancer live longer and lessened side effects, a study found. In the trial of 245 patients led by researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, 68.9 percent of patients who got Yervoy, designed to spur the immune system to attack cancer cells, and the Sanofi (SAN) drug, GM-CSF, were alive one year later, compared to 52.9 percent of those who got Yervoy alone. The results, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting, show that two immune-stimulating drugs may be better than one in treating melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. While the finding needs to be confirmed in a larger study before the combination is routinely practiced, it offers a first, hopeful glimpse into a potential new approach for battling the disease that kills 9,500 people each year. Skin bleach pulled from NZ shelves

The country's medicines and medical devices safety authority has recalled a skin bleach banned in the European Union that's been linked with cancer in lab rats. Medsafe has instructed the distributor to pull products containing the controversial skin whitener, hydroquinone, from wholesale and retail outlets. An investigation by the Sunday Star-Times in April highlighted sales of the drug may be breaching medicines regulations. The medicine had been sold inadvertently over the counter by national beauty chain Caci since 2004, as well as by Trade Me. While hydroquinone is classified as a pharmacy-only medicine, Medsafe said last month no products containing the drug had been approved for sale here. Medsafe compliance management branch manager Derek Fitzgerald said popular pharmacy brand John Plunkett's Superfade was included in the recall. "They are no longer supplying Superfade. But there could still be Superfade in the retail chains at the moment. If it hasn't already happened, it will happen shortly." Superfade has been sold in New Zealand for about 15 years. There have been no reported adverse reactions to its use here and marketer Pharmabroker Sales, which started marketing and distributing the product late last year, said it was growing in popularity. Drugs gang members led by Blackburn men are jailed 12:00pm Saturday 1st June 2013 in News A MAJOR drugs cartel that peddled more than 1.5m of heroin and cocaine across the UK has been jailed for a total of 167 years. Blackburn drug barons Suhail Vohra and Babar Qasam led the sophisticated operation, in which 45kgs of cocaine, 200,000 in cash, plus heroin and cannabis were confiscated by Lancashire polices Serious and Organised Crime unit. As well as 32-year-old Vohra, of Charnwood Close and Qasam, 34, of Chestnut Walk, 34 members of the organised crime gang were also imprisoned as part of the police operation. They include Arif Akram, 33, of Skelshaw Close, Sajid Akram, 34, of Brunel Walk, Rahim Bukhsh, 29, of Pelham Street, Zubair Patel, 27, of Whalley New Road, Soyab Sidat, 29, of Providence Street, Mohseen Valli, 28, Wellfield Road, all Blackburn. These eight will serve a combined total of 51 years and six months behind bars after being convicted of a variety of charges including conspiracy to supply class A drugs and money laundering.
