Florida Autism Center Advances Autism Treatment through New Staff Training Series

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2013

Tallahassee, FL (PRWEB) May 31, 2013 What makes an effective supervisor? Often, we speak in generalities. They must know how to collaborate, they must listen to those they supervise, they need to be flexible and have a sense of humor. The list goes on. One company, though, is getting down to the nitty gritty of what supervisors in their particular program need. This summer, the Florida Autism Center, a Tallahassee, FL based treatment center for young children on the autism spectrum, will launch a professional series aimed at really getting to the heart of what their leaders need. Chrystin Bullock, Executive Director of FAC, says "Our managers are already masters of their craft, they provide exceptional therapy services to our kids, but job descriptions alone are not sufficient to achieve the kind of consistency in quality that we strive for here. This series is aimed at helping them lead, and impart their knowledge and expertise effectively to our staff and the families we serve." This kind of tailored professional development may be a way to help organizations better retain and attract top talent. "You can go anywhere and get a lecture on being more effective and productive," says Bullock. She … Continue reading

FDA clears medical device for muscle and joint rehabilitation

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2013

Public release date: 30-May-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Jim Newman newmanj@ohsu.edu 503-494-8231 Oregon Health & Science University PORTLAND, Ore. - The Food and Drug Administration today granted 510(k) clearance to a muscle and joint rehabilitation medical device developed by OHSU Scientist Dr. Paul Cordo, Ph.D., and AMES Technology, Inc. AMES is an Oregon Health & Science University spinoff company established to transform Dr. Cordo's OHSU research findings into a rehabilitation medical device for use in hospitals and clinics. Today's FDA clearance allows AMES to market and sell the device. AMES anticipates delivering the device to hospitals and clinics in early 2014. The typical patient population that possibly receive treatment with an AMES Device would include stroke victims and patients with partial injuries to the spinal cord injury patients. The AMES rehabilitation medical device uses robotic technology to assist a patient in moving the affected limb while vibrating the muscle receptors at the same time. During use, the patient's input effort and other parameters important in therapy are measured and recorded by the AMES Device and displayed to the patient as real-time visual biofeedback. The AMES Device can also perform several diagnostic tests each time a patient is … Continue reading

Bright light therapy may improve sleep and promote recovery in patients with mild TBI

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2013

Public release date: 30-May-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Lynn Celmer lcelmer@aasmnet.org American Academy of Sleep Medicine DARIEN, IL A new study suggests that bright light therapy may improve sleep, cognition, emotion and brain function following mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Results show that six weeks of morning bright light therapy resulted in a marked decrease in subjective daytime sleepiness. This improvement was further associated with improvements in the propensity to fall asleep and nighttime sleep quality. Bright light therapy also affected depressive symptoms. "Our preliminary data suggests that morning bright light therapy might be helpful to reduce subjective daytime sleepiness and to improve nighttime sleep," said investigator Mareen Weber, PhD, instructor in psychiatry at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Belmont, Mass. "Importantly, the research also shows changes in brain activation during a demanding cognitive task, suggesting that bright light treatment might yield changes in brain functioning." The research abstract was published recently in an online supplement of the journal SLEEP, and Weber will present the findings Monday, June 3, in Baltimore, Md., at SLEEP 2013, the 27th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies LLC. The study group comprised 18 individuals with a documented history of … Continue reading

Low doses of marijuana component can help prevent brain damage

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2013

Washington, May 31 : Tel Aviv University researchers have found that extremely low doses of THC - the psychoactive component of marijuana - protects the brain from long-term cognitive damage in the wake of injury from hypoxia (lack of oxygen), seizures, or toxic drugs. Brain damage can have consequences ranging from mild cognitive deficits to severe neurological damage. Previous studies focused on injecting high doses of THC within a very short time frame - approximately 30 minutes - before or after injury. The current research by Prof. Yosef Sarne of Tel Aviv University's Adelson Center for the Biology of Addictive Diseases at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine demonstrates that even extremely low doses of THC - around 1,000 to 10,000 times less than that in a conventional marijuana cigarette - administered over a wide window of 1 to 7 days before or 1 to 3 days after injury can jumpstart biochemical processes which protect brain cells and preserve cognitive function over time. This treatment, especially in light of the long time frame for administration and the low dosage, could be applicable to many cases of brain injury and be safer over time, Prof. Sarne said. While performing experiments on the … Continue reading

Couple raising funds for medical treatment

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2013

VALDOSTA The team of neurologists could beckon Mandy Painter and caretaker Phil Painter to Boston to treat her debilitating neoplastic syndrome any day now, but the couple still needs your help to fund the possibly three months of therapy needed as Mandy battles to restore full function of her cerebellum and subsequently, her limbs. The quest to find healing in New England may not be possible, without contributions from the community. The couple struggled with setting a goal for their quarter-year trip to have Mandy treated by doctors in Massachusetts General Hospital's Ataxia Unit, because there are many unknowns associated with the cutting edge program she'll attend to regain control of her motor skills, according to Phil and Mandy. We need help with airfare, hotel expenses, food expenses and we have to take care of expenses back home, said Mandy. We're also asking that if someone has any frequent flier miles that they can donate for them to do so. Mandy's immune system began attacking proteins in her cerebellum that resembled those associated with a tumor that was discovered back in 2008, according to Phil and Mandy. The assault on Mandy's cerebellum continued long after the cancer had been removed … Continue reading

Hormone replacement should be ‘last resort’ option

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2013

Women with hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms were treated for decades with hormone therapy, including Premarin (Estrogens) and Provera (a synthetic version of Progesterone). Premarin was derived from the urine of pregnant horses which contained over 200 different chemicals that are foreign to the human body. Now we know that these drugs caused cancers, blood clots, cysts in the breasts, problems with memory, heart problems and more. More and more, people are looking for an alternative to using drugs as hormone replacement therapy. Many are turning to bio-identical hormones as that alternative. Bio-identical hormones are derived from either soybeans or wild yams. The human females body normally makes its hormones from cholesterol in the body, so it doubtful that bio-identical hormones from plants are identical to human hormones.
