Cases of prescription medication misuse by school children include substances such as ADD drug Ritalin, antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication. STUDENTS as young as six have been suspended from WA schools for misusing drugs. Figures obtained by The Sunday Times reveal 368 suspensions were handed out in the public school system last year for substance misuse including alcohol, prescription medication and cigarettes. It was a 10 per cent rise in suspensions from the previous year and included six students in years 1-5, including a pupil in year 1. The bulk of the suspensions were handed out to students in years 8 and 9. An Education Department spokesman said the suspensions did not necessarily mean the students were caught taking the drugs. They may have been found in possession of the substance or been caught trying to push it. Cases of prescription medication misuse included substances such as ADD drug Ritalin, antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication. He said students should not be in possession of these drugs because they should be given to a teacher to store away in a locked cabinet. Education Department acting statewide services executive director Eirlys Ingram said while schools could educate young people about drug and alcohol use, … Continue reading

Hay Festival 2013: Leading neuroscientist warns against 'smart drugs'

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

Barbara Sahakian has warned about the dangers of buying cognitive-enhancing medicine - the so-called 'smart drugs - from the internet. Talking at the Telegraph Hay Festival, Sahakian said: "Many students and professionals are using the drugs to get a competitive edge, perhaps the best performance in an exam, but many of them are buying them off the internet and that is very dangerous way to buy what are prescription drugs. Many are made in contaminated conditions, even made in someone's garage at times, and could be just a compound made under dangerous conditions in say, China or Mumbai. "You just don't know what is actually in these pills. They have not been tested as they would be by pharmaceutical companies and you are not getting something that is safe." Sahakian, whose new book is called Bad Moves: How Decision-Making Goes Wrong, said that one of the effects of the modern 24/7 lifestyle is that more people are taking 'smart drugs' to do well in their studies and in their work. She said that there has been a huge increase in stimulant use, which has doubled over the past decade. A recent study in America revealed that 16% of healthy people … Continue reading

Drugs to Boost Female Libido Are A Slippery Slope

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

Getty Images In the past, women who lacked sexual desire were stigmatized as frigid today, psychiatrys diagnostic manual labels them with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). Big Pharma is betting that many such women will want to take a drug to rev up their sex lives, but is that a good idea? Ethicists and feminists are concerned that the emergence a drug that can amp up female sexual longings may have lasting effects on the very nature of female desire. Male sexual enhancement drugs, you see, are about shoring up the plumbing improving blood flow to the penis while research so far suggests that most women need more than mere physical arousal to get in the mood. To stoke female desire with pharmacology, then, you need to get into the brain. And that, understandably, makes some people nervous. While I share some of those worries, I believe well nonetheless soon be faced with a variety of such drugs and need to address the way we view and regulate them rather than trying to turn back the tide. In this weeks New York Times Magazine, author Dan Bergner chronicles the lives of some participants in clinical trials of two new drugs aimed … Continue reading

Tennessee Pharmacy Steroid Injections Recalled After Complications Arise

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

May 25, 2013 redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports Your Universe Online Federal and state health officials are warning health care providers against using anti-inflammatory steroid injections from Main Street Family Pharmacy in Newbern, Tennessee after seven patients developed abscesses following treatment with the substance. According to CNNs Michael Martinez, the compounding pharmacy has been placed on probation and voluntarily recalled the steroid preservative free methylprednisolone acetate (80 mg/mL) or MPA in at least 11 states. The move comes after five patients in Illinois and two more in North Carolina developed abscesses following injection. The Tennessee Department of Health, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are all investigating Main Street Family Pharmacy, and state health officials report that the facility is currently on probation following a recent inspection, Martinez said. Authorities told CNN that no cases of meningitis or other life-threatening infections had been reported. Out of an abundance of caution, the FDA recommends that health care providers not administer any products labeled as sterile from Main Street and quarantine them until further guidance is provided, the agency said in a statement Friday. An investigation into the exact source of these … Continue reading
