Drugs worth over US$4 billion seized in Australia in 2011-2012:report

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2013

20 May 2013| last updated at 12:01PM The figure is a 154 percent increase from 9.3 tonnes seized in 2010-11, Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying. The repport showed there were also 93,000 drug-related arrests and a total of 809 hidden drug laboratories discovered during this period. Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said the key to stopping drug activities is police teamwork and criminal intelligence. "85 percent of the drugs we seize are because of criminal intelligence that our law enforcement agencies collect before the drugs ever arrive in Australia," he said. The ACC also announced record seizures of hormones in performance and image-enhancing drugs. Executive director of ACC Paul Jevtovic said drugs in sports are on the rise, hence the commission's focus on drugs in sport. "In relation to hormones, it's the highest reported detections that we've had in the last decade," he said. "Steroids for example are also one of those things used, and we actually incorporate steroids and hormones in the category of image-enhancing drugs." -- BERNAMA See original here: Drugs worth over US$4 billion seized in Australia in 2011-2012:report … Continue reading

Illicit drugs linked to corruption

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2013

An alarming increase in the use, seizure and arrests for illicit drugs is the central finding of the Australian Crime Commission's annual report, released on Monday, with significant implications for sport, especially the professional football codes. ACC chief executive John Lawler warns "the illicit drug market remains the principal source of profit for organised crime". He said criminals infiltrate sporting clubs and gain information or compromise players in exchange for illicit drugs, such as amphetamines and cocaine, and use it to spot-bet, or fix matches, capitalising on the myriad gambling outlets now available. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton issued a similar warning following the AFL's announcement on Thursday of a more than fourfold increase in the number of positive tests by AFL players for illicit substances. Advertisement Ashton said illicit drugs, rather than the performance and image-enhancing drugs that had caught players from Cronulla and Essendon, had a greater potential to compromise the integrity of players and matches. While PIEDs are banned only for elite sportspeople, illicit drugs involve athletes in criminal activity. The NRL admits it is sufficiently concerned about the risk of illicit drugs to consider implementing a centralised program of target and random testing. The ACC's … Continue reading

23 tonnes of drugs worth $5 billion seized across Australia in 2011-12

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2013

The Australian Crime Commission's (ACC) annual illicit drug data report shows drug purity is on the rise and Australia is a target. The ACC handed down its 2011-12 report at Sydney's international mail centre this morning, as the report shows parcel post accounts for thelargest number of illicit drugborder detections. Australian Federal PoliceCommissioner Tony Negus says more than 23 tonnes of drugs worth over $5 billion were seized nationally in 2011-12. That is a 154 per cent increasefrom the 9.3 tonnes seized in2010-11. There were also 93,000 drug-related arrests and a record 809 hidden drug laboratories discovered. Police found the smugglers' methods included concealing drugs in kettles, curry paste jars, safe boxes, batteries and whiteboard markers. Mr Negus says Australia is a target. "We haveintelligence and we are beingtargeted in this country," he said. "Therelative height of theAustralian dollar, the relativewealth of this country comparedto others at the moment meanswe are a target. "But I thinkthe higher rate of seizures we have actually made over the last 12 months showsenforcement is meeting thatchallenge head on." Customs seize drugs worth $5bn in a year

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2013

A record 23.8 tonnes of illicit drugs worth $5 billion were intercepted by Australian customs staff last year, including the highest number of performance and image enhancing substances for a decade. The strong dollar and demand for the drugs means criminal gangs around the world will continue to target the Australian market, authorities say. International narcotics syndicates are using increasingly sophisticated methods and embarkation points to smuggle substances into the country, according to the latest Australian Crime Commission Illicit Drug Data report, published on Monday. "Over 23 tonnes of illicit drugs were seized nationally in the 2011/12 year," Australian Federal Police Commissioner Tony Negus said. "This represents a 154 per cent increase from the 9.3 tonnes that were seized in 2010/11. "Our high Australian dollar, our relative wealth as a country and our appetite for illicit drugs will mean we remain the target of international drug traffickers and international syndicates around the world." A single 11-tonne seizure of hypophosphorous acid, used to make methylamphetamine, in NSW was among the key reasons for the dramatic increase. Also bumping it up was a 57 per cent increase in border seizures of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids, hormones and peptides. There were … Continue reading

Drugs in sport report justified: ACC

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2013

The controversial drugs in sport report has been vindicated by record seizures of performance enhancing drugs, Australia's crime fighters say. And the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) says since the release of its drugs in sport report, imports into Australia have dropped. The ACC was criticised for a lack of specifics when it released its drugs in sport report in February. Many clubs and individuals complained all sportspeople were tainted by the report finding that performance enhancing drugs in sport were widespread and linked with organised crime. Advertisement But Justice Minister Jason Clare says fresh figures released on Monday in the ACC's illicit drugs report show the sport report was justified. "When the (drugs in sport) report was released earlier this year we made the point that there had been something like a 200 per cent increase in the importation of some performance and image enhancing drugs," he told reporters in Sydney. "Interestingly, in the last few months we have seen a drop in importations, which shows the impact of the release of that report only a few months ago." The comments came as six rugby league players were banned for two years for drug use. The players in lower grade … Continue reading
