Brain cancer the leading cause of cancer death for under-39s

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

Topics: brain cancer, cancer council queensland, tumour JORDAN Carroll faces a lifetime of medication, serious side effects, and the certain knowledge that he will eventually be blind - and he's still only 16 years old. The Brisbane teenager has been battling a brain tumour since he was 11 - cheating death on more than one occasion. The tumour has taken his eyesight, his memory and his childhood. And there's very little doctors can do for him. Jordan's mum, Marie, has watched him endure a long and painful process of trial and error as his doctors tried chemotherapy, brain surgery, and even a trial drug in a bid to shrink his tumour. There are few effective treatments for brain tumours like Jordan's, which is why Marie is calling on Queenslanders to donate to Cancer Council Queensland's Tax Appeal - and give research into brain tumours a substantial boost. Marie said the nightmare began when Jordan complained of a terrible headache one night. "Within minutes, he was yelling with pain and had started to throw up, so we decided to take him to hospital," she said. "On the way, he stopped and was very quiet - we were close to going home … Continue reading

Father: Titus Young's issues due to brain disorder

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

Titus Youngs father says that his son suffers from a brain disorder and that his behavior his changed since a concussion suffered during his rookie season that the Detroit Lions never announced as an injury. Richard Young told Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News that his son was happy and cheerful Friday morning before leaving the familys home and eventually being arrested and charged with burglary, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. It was the third arrest for Young in a week. His mind is not capable enough to go out and deal with society because of this situation," Richard Young told Katzenstein. Richard Young could not remember the name of the disorder he says is plaguing his son and said he is not taking his medication that has been prescribed and has not been dedicated to treatment. "He's not dealing with it the way he should be," Richard Young said. "If the judge gives him a court order, then maybe he'll get the help he needs. He's always been temperamental. But he's changed. It's different now. I'm thinking about my son. He needs to get help and get better. When he's around us, his mind comes and … Continue reading

Rugby death highlights need for education: brain injury experts

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

OTTAWA Rowan Stringer might still be alive if there were better awareness of the immediate dangers of concussions and repeated concussions, according to the president of the Brain Injury Association of Canada. Stringer, 18, was the captain of the John McCrae Secondary School Rugby Team. The Barrhaven teen suffered trauma to the head after a hard tackle last Wednesday and later died in hospital. Her family has said that in the leadup to that final game, Stringer had complained of headaches following two other blows to the head. Was this her first brain injury? That was my first thought, says Jeannette Holman-Price, president of the Brain Injury Association, a national organization representing people with brain injuries. My next thought was education, education education thats where were going to make a difference. Holman-Price says theres a misunderstanding in the public conversation about concussion, a tendency to underplay the seriousness of the injury because it cant be seen from the outside, and doesnt involve blood or broken bones. It needs to be shouted from the rooftops of every hospital and every sports league: concussion is a brain injury, says Holman-Price, whose son suffered a brain injury as a teenager. The media says … Continue reading

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, Germany - Higher prices for its multiple sclerosis treatment helped German pharmaceutical company Merck KGaA post a 54 per cent rise in first-quarter net profit. Merck also saw stronger sales of materials for liquid-crystal displays and raised its profit forecast, saying it would achieve its 2014 goals this year. Its optimism came after it reported net profit of 266 million euros ($345 million) in the first three months of the year, up from 172.7 euros a year earlier. Total revenues rose 4.4 per cent to 2.76 billion. The company said Tuesday that its multiple sclerosis treatment, Rebif, saw sales rise 6 per cent to 454 million euros due to price increases in the U.S. and higher sales in Europe. Actress Gina Lollobrigida's diamonds fetch $4.9 million at auction

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

(Reuters) - Diamond jewelry belonging to Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida sold for more than 4.74 million Swiss francs ($4.9 million) on Tuesday in Geneva and set a record for pearl earrings, auctioneer Sotheby's said. Lollobrigida, a leading sex symbol of the 1950s and 1960s, said she was selling the jewelry to raise money for stem cell research. A pair of diamond and natural pearl earrings sold for 2.29 million francs ($2.37 million), an auction record. The earrings beat the $1.98 million figure set in 2011 from the sale of natural pearl and diamond earrings by Bulgari, owned by late actress Elizabeth Taylor. Other prized items from Lollobrigida's collection included a Bulgari necklace and bracelet combination, and a Bulgari ring featuring a 19.03-carat cushion-shaped diamond. Each fetched 749,000 francs ($776,056). The 85-year-old actress attended the auction and said she hoped the money raised would be put towards advancing stem cell research in Italy. "Jewels are meant to give pleasure and for many years I had enormous pleasure wearing mine," Lollobrigida said in a statement. "Selling my jewels to help raise awareness of stem cell therapy, which can cure so many illnesses, seems to me a wonderful use to which to put … Continue reading

At actress's Geneva jewel auction, $3M for 1 gem

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

GENEVA (AP) Sotheby's auctioned off $78 million in jewels Tuesday night, fetching just under $3 million for a fancy yellow diamond belonging to actress Gina Lollobrigida that was once owned by a shah of Persia and she hoped would now bring more support for stem cell research. The auction house said the diamond was a highlight in a collection of 23 jewels that the 85-year-old actress, who starred opposite Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra and other top actors in the 1950s and 1960s, was selling partly to fund an international hospital for stem cell treatment. Jewelry, watches and other luxury items are sold every spring by the big auction houses at Geneva's elegant lakefront hotels seemingly a world away from some European countries whose economies are shrinking as their governments enact often tough budget austerity measures to get a handle on their debts. The 74.53-carat fancy yellow diamond that was sold off once belonged to Ahmad Shah Qajar, the shah of Persia from 1909 to 1925 and the last ruler of the Qajar dynasty. Its sale for $2,985,750 set both an auction record and a record price per carat an eye-popping $40,061 per carat for a fancy yellow diamond, according to … Continue reading
