Columbia couple sues state over toddler’s sexual-reassignment surgery

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC Mark and Pam Crawfords 8-year-old adopted child recently declared that he is a boy asking for a haircut like his fathers and telling his pediatrician that he, indeed, is a boy. It was a change the Columbia couple said they saw coming for their child, who was born with both male and female internal sex organs and ambiguous genitalia. However, when the child was 16 months old and in foster care, surgeons removed the childs penis and testicular tissue in an effort to assign him to the female sex. Now, seven years later, the Crawfords are suing the state Department of Social Services, physicians and state employees who were involved at that surgery, arguing it was medically unnecessary and denied their child who they call only M.C. in lawsuits to protect his privacy the constitutional right to make decisions about his own body. The state took something very special away from our son, and for no reason except for adults inability to deal with people who are born different, said Pam Crawford, who adopted M.C. a few months after his surgery. We hope to put other doctors, hospitals and state agencies on notice that they cannot mutilate children … Continue reading

Couple sues state over toddler's sexual-reassignment surgery

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A Forest Acres couple is suing the state to challenge its decision to perform sexual-reassignment surgery on a toddler in its care who was born with both male and female internal sexual genitals. Mark and Pam Crawford, adoptive parents of the now 8-year-old child, spoke to the media Tuesday morning about the lawsuits filed in partnership with the Southern Poverty Law Center and other advocates in federal and state courts. The Crawfords say the child was born with intersex condition, which means a person is born with a sexual anatomy that doesn't fit the definition of a typical man or woman. The suit alleges the South Carolina Department of Social Services decided to perform "dangerous and mutilating surgery" in April, 2006. The decision to make the 16-month old a girl took away the child's right to choose his or her sexual identity later in life, the suit states. Named in the suit are the Department of Social Services, The Medical University of South Carolina, Greenville Health System and several other caregivers. "Doctors decided to play God," said a SPLC representative Tuesday morning in front of the federal courthouse. "It's too late for my son, but we … Continue reading

Male testosterone levels increase when victorious in competition against rivals, but not friends

They also can fuel bitter rivalries, such as the long-standing animosity between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. A University of Missouri study has found that testosterone levels during group competition are modulated depending on the relationships among the competitors and may be related to the formation of alliances in warfare. "One interesting thing about humans is that we are the only animal that competes in teams," said Mark Flinn, professor of anthropology at MU. "Our hormonal reactions while competing are part of how we evolved as a cooperative species. What we found in our study is that although male's testosterone levels increase when men are victorious against strangers or rivals, levels of the hormone tend to stay the same when competing against friends." Flinn and his research team studied males from varying age groups on the island of Dominica while they played dominoes or cricket. Flinn found that when males competed against a … Continue reading

Testosterone Replacement Therapy Aside, Luke Rockhold's Focus Needs to Shift to UFC on FX 8

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

COMMENTARY | On Saturday, May 18, 2013, former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold will attempt to establish himself as a top contender within the UFC when he takes on former Light Heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort. Throughout the build-up to this fight, Rockhold launched a campaign criticizing Belfort for his use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). The former Strikeforce champion passed judgment on Belfort's physique, and all but labeled the UFC veteran a career-long cheater. In a recent interview with Yahoo! Sports, Rockhold stated: "Just look at his physique. You can't tell me that at his age, something like that looks natural. TRT use is something I don't agree with at all. It's a way to get around the system. They say TRT is needed for low testosterone, that it's a medical condition. Well, what causes low testosterone? Prolonged steroid use is one cause." Belfort was, indeed, suspended for nine months in 2006 for his use of a banned steroid at the time. However, his current TRT usage is overseen by medical health professionals, and testosterone levels must be normal at the time of the fight. The procedure is currently legal, and Rockhold's continual efforts to complain about his opponent's usage … Continue reading

The question: Im embarrassed to say it, but Im noticing that its getting more difficult to maintain an erection. Im interested in sex and feel desire but at 55, I cant maintain the same duration as I was able to as a younger man. Any suggestions for what I can do next to prevent this from getting worse? The answer: Erectile dysfunction occurs when a man cannot get or sustain an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. Every now and then, people can have difficulty maintaining an erection but if this is a long-standing concern, it can cause stress, relationship strain and affect self-confidence. Although it may feel like youre facing this alone, erectile dysfunction is common and affects more men than we think. In fact, a recent study that involved 4000 Canadian men showed that about half of those between age 40 to 88 suffered from erectile dysfunction. To understand what may be happening for you, it is important to know a few details about your health history that may put you at risk for erectile dysfunction. New tools to help cancer researchers

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

Australian researchers hope to create more specialised cancer treatments with fewer side effects using high-tech equipment. Professor Michael Parker, of the newly opened Rational Drug Discovery Centre, said the new technologies will hopefully help researchers develop more sophisticated drugs that spare cancer patients the toxic side effects of treatments such as chemotherapy. 'If we can turn molecules into drugs, they'll only hit the protein we're interested in ... so we shouldn't have side effects,' he said. The new machines include a robot that creates protein crystals that can be virtually mapped, as well as instruments to test how potential drugs bind to cancer-causing proteins. In an Australian first, there is also a laser scanning cytometer which lets researchers study cancer drug prototypes within the body. Researchers at the new centre, based at Melbourne's St Vincent's Institute, will create three-dimensional images of cancer-spreading proteins. Until recently, computerised images were not detailed enough and researchers were forced to rely more heavily on trial and error when testing drugs. 'This is sort of information we need to go to pharmaceutical companies to develop them into drugs that go into clinical trials,' Professor Parker said. While Lilydale man Steve Harris underwent chemotherapy for an … Continue reading
