Treatments purporting to offer "male rejuvenation" and combat the effects of aging have become popular in recent years, but such claims are not backed up by science, experts say. Men seeking such treatments often receive testosterone, sometimes in combination with other hormones such as including steroids and growth hormones. Advertisers claim the treatments increase strength and sex drive, and make patients feel younger. However, studies examining the effects these treatments are lacking, and there's little evidence to support their use in men who don't have hormone deficiencies, experts say. "There's really no scientific evidence that they will help a man to function optimally, either in the sexual arena, or that they will have a effect on the general health and wellbeing of a man," said Dr. Eli Lizza, a urologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. Randy Dotinga HealthDay Reporter Posted: Friday, May 10, 2013, 2:44 PM FRIDAY, May 10 (HealthDay News) -- Testosterone supplements are touted as a cure for low libido, but men who take them may reduce their odds of fathering a child, new research suggests. Many men who sought infertility treatment at two U.S. clinics reported taking prescription testosterone supplements, according to a new study. And in most cases their sperm counts skyrocketed after they stopped taking the male hormone. The study, limited to a pair of clinics in Alabama and Kansas, looked at the years 2005 to 2011. The researchers don't know if testosterone supplements, which continue to gain popularity, are contributing to even more cases of infertility now. Nor is it clear whether the hormone is harming fertility across the nation. Still, the research suggests that testosterone spells trouble for many American men who want to have children, said study co-author Dr. Peter Kolettis, a professor of urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The drug, Breo, is an inhaled treatment made by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline Plc (Other OTC: GLAXF - news) and Theravance Inc of the United States. It consists of a corticosteroid, fluticasone furoate, which reduces inflammation, and a novel long-acting beta-agonist, called vilanterol, which is designed to open the airways. The product is inhaled through a palm-sized device called Ellipta. COPD is the third-leading cause of death in the United States, according to federal data. Theravance shares were up 11 percent to $34.78 in afternoon trading. Glaxo's U.S. shares rose 1.95 percent to $51.69.
