Loyola Opens New Unit for Cancer Patients Undergoing Stem Cell Transplants

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2013

Newswise MAYWOOD, Il. - Loyola University Medical Center has opened a new 20-bed unit for patients undergoing stem cell transplants for cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. The unit is designed to improve clinical outcomes, while providing many of the comforts of home. "We expect the innovative design will help to improve and accelerate patients recoveries, while the home-like amenities will provide a comforting environment for patients and their families," said Patrick Stiff, MD, division director of Hematology/Oncology and medical director of Loyolas Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center. The unit treats patients with hematologic (blood) cancers. Patients receive high-dose chemotherapy and/or radiation to kill cancer cells. Because these treatments also destroy immune system cells, patients are infused with stem cells derived from bone marrow or umbilical cord blood. These stem cells develop into new immune cells. Patients typically stay in the unit for three or four weeks. The unit has two 10-bed wings -- The Coleman Foundation Bone Marrow Unit and the Donald P. and Byrd M. Kelly Family Foundation Oncology Unit. Four rooms are licensed for intensive care. At the front of each wing is a medication room, supply room and nutrition room. The floor plan ensures that … Continue reading

Dietary Supplement Lightning Rod Capsules Recall

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2013

Lightning Rod capsules are sold nationwide over the counter and via the Internet as a dietary supplement marketed for male sexual enhancement. Chang Kwung is conducting a voluntary recall after being notified by the US FDA that analytical testing found the Lightning Rod Capsules to contain an analogue of Sildenafil. Sildenafil is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved drug used for the treatment of male Erectile Dysfunction (ED), making Lightning Rod Capsules an unapproved new drug. The active drug ingredient is not listed on the label for this product. Use of this product may pose a threat to consumers because the analogue may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. ED is a common problem in men with these conditions, and consumers may seek these types of products to enhance sexual performance. To date, the firm has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall or is aware of any illnesses associated with this product. Chang Kwung Inc. advises any customer in possession of Lightning Rod Capsules matching the description above, … Continue reading
