League wants HGH testing, needs players to want it, too

Getty Images In a recent blurb regarding the reported increase in HGH use among NFL players, we suggested that the league isnt using available legal avenues to compel the NFLPA to honor its 2011 agreement to permit HGH testing perhaps because the league doesnt really want HGH testing. Our comment sparked a back-channel discussion with the powers-that-be at 345 Park Avenue, which culminated in a Friday telephone interview with NFL Senior V.P. of Labor Law and Policy Adolpho Birch. There is no vehicle we could use that is anything beyond pointless, Birch said regarding the use of litigation or arbitration to compel the players to honor the existing deal. Birch explained that the Collective Bargaining Agreement doesnt specifically mandate testing; it requires negotiation as to the procedures that will be used. At most, then, a grievance filed under the labor deal would result in a ruling directing the NFLPA to negotiate in good faith something the NFLPA surely believes its doing. Litigation in court isnt an option, Birch said, given the specific terms of the labor deal. Mining Millions Of Web Searches To Discover Drug Side Effects

The web is now used for all kinds of illness tracking, notably during flu season. By analyzing when people search for, or tweet about, symptoms, its possible to build maps of how people are affected during epidemics. That can help professionals size up the problem, and prepare for the worst. But flu-mapping is likely just a forerunner of the Internets health sensing potential. Now, researchers have shown its usefulness for something even more helpful, and previously unknown: drug side effects. In time, their techniques could give earlier warnings of when drugs, or combinations of drugs, are causing problems, and alert regulators to action. Researchers at Microsoft, Columbia, and Stanford had a hunch that all the searching people do for health information online could throw up some insights. In particular, they were interested in patients who take both an antidepressant called paroxetine, and a cholesterol medicine called pravastatin, and whether the mixture caused an increase in the rate of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). To find out, they mined 82 million searches across Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Anticancer drugs save lives and/or improve the quality of life for many cancer patients. Many anti-cancer drugs work by killing tumor cells after inducing damage to DNA. The public has an opportunity to learn about the mechanisms of action of some commonly used anticancer drugs and how laboratory research may lead to novel targets and new strategies for cancer treatment. Yinsheng Wang, a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Riverside, will give a free lecture on May 16 on campus to discuss those drugs that induce damage to DNA, as well as those biomolecules that allow for selective targeting of tumor cells. He will also discuss the implications of personalized medicine in cancer treatment. Wang's hour-long talk is titled "Curing cancer: How do anticancer drugs work?" It will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Rooms C, D and E, University Extension Center (UNEX). Seating is open. Parking at UNEX is free for lecture attendees. Gloucestershire drugs gang jailed

Dramatic footage shot from a police helicopter in 2011 shows the moment one of a Gloucestershire-based drugs gang's couriers was arrested. Five members of a Gloucestershire-based drugs gang are behind bars for their part in a cocaine supply ring. Gloucester Crown Court heard the operation, which included transporting cocaine from Leicester, was masterminded by Mark Dainty, 45. Dainty, of Southgate Street, Gloucester pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to supply cocaine and money laundering. He was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in jail. Three others received sentences of almost 15 years. The court was told the investigation started early in 2011 when one of the group's couriers was arrested. Gary Paul George Hooper of Evenlode Road, Tuffley, was later charged with possession with intent to supply a class A drug and jailed for four years in May 2011. A 30-year-old woman from Tuffley, also arrested at the time, was charged with money laundering offences and was issued with a formal caution.
