Swedish police find drugs on Justin Bieber bus, no suspects

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Swedish police said on Thursday they found drugs on teen idol Justin Bieber's tour bus in Stockholm, but had no suspects and were unlikely to pursue the case further. A police officer on crowd duty smelled marijuana on an empty tour bus outside the hotel where Bieber was staying just before his concert in the capital on Wednesday night, police spokesman Kjell Lindgren said. Police searched the empty bus after it had taken 10 to 15 individuals to the concert venue. "The police went onto the bus and searched it and found a small amount of narcotics," Lindgren said. "We don't know who had the drugs or who smoked them, so it will be hard to link them with any individual." The drugs have been sent for analysis and Lindgren said the police did not plan further action unless they got more information. Bieber is travelling Europe on his "Believe" tour and is due in Finland for a concert on Friday. Bieber got into trouble earlier this month after a museum dedicated to Anne Frank said the 19-year-old had written that he hoped the young Holocaust victim would have been a "belieber", the word used by his … Continue reading

Prison bosses call for drugs rethink

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

24 April 2013 Last updated at 23:32 ET Current policy on illegal drugs creates victims of crime and more prisoners at a cost to taxpayers, the Prison Governors Association (PGA) has argued. It says blanket prohibition of Class A drugs allows criminals to control the quality and supply of them to addicts, who turn to crime to fund their habits. The PGA has signed up to the international Count the Costs campaign against an enforcement-led approach. The Home Office said drugs were illegal "because they are dangerous". PGA president Eoin McLennan-Murray said it believed "a substantial segment of the prison population have been convicted of low-level acquisitive crimes simply to fund addiction". "The current war on drugs is successful in creating further victims of acquisitive crime, increasing cost to the taxpayer to accommodate a higher prison population and allowing criminals to control and profit from the sale and distribution of Class A drugs," he said. "A fundamental review of the prohibition-based policy is desperately required and this is why the Prison Governors Association are keen to support the Count the Costs initiative." Count the Costs co-ordinator Martin Powell said PGA members witnessed "the day-to-day futility of the UK's current enforcement-led … Continue reading

Dr. Farshid Guilak: Can stem cells help those with arthritis?

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2013

Stems cells taken from just a few grams of body fat are a promising weapon against the crippling effects of osteoarthritis. For the past two decades, knee, hip or other joint replacements have been the standard treatment for the deterioration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone. But artificial joints only last about 15 years and are difficult to repair once they fail. Stem cell injections may offer a new type of therapy by either stopping the degenerative process or by regenerating the damaged cartilage, said pioneering researcher Dr. Farshid Guilak, a professor of orthopedic surgery and director of orthopedic research at Duke University. Guilak, one of the first researchers to grow cartilage from fat, explains why stem cells are a bright light in osteoarthritis research and why widespread clinical use is still years away. Below is an edited transcript of the interview. Q: How are stem cell injections purported to help? A: Several studies in animals show that stem cell injections may help by reducing the inflammation in the joint. Stem cells appear to have a natural capacity to produce anti-inflammatory molecules, and once injected in the joint, can slow down the degenerative process in osteoarthritis. (Since this interview, … Continue reading

Liver hormone offers hope for diabetes treatment

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2013

Betatrophin sparks the proliferation of pancreatic cells in mice, which are found in the islet of Langerhans (shown here). ROBERT MARKUS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY Biologists have found a hormone in the liver that spurs the growth of insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas, a discovery they hope will lead to new treatments for diabetes. A team led by Douglas Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, identified the hormone, betatrophin, by inducing insulin resistance in mice using a peptide that binds to insulin receptors. That caused the animals' insulin-secreting pancreatic cells to proliferate. The researchers then searched for genes that showed increased activity, zeroing in on one that they were able to link to betatrophin production. Further experiments showed that 8-week-old mice injected with betatrophin showed showed an average 17-fold rise in the replication of their insulin-secreting pancreatic cells, the researchers report in Cell1. Betatrophin is also found in the human liver, the team says. Its rare that one discovers a new hormone, and this one is interesting because its so specific, says Melton. It works only on cellsand its so robust and so potent. Pancreatic cells replicate rapidly during embryonic and neonatal stages in both mice and … Continue reading

MANILA, Philippines There is no need for actress-TV host Kris Aquino to seek stem cell therapy treatment abroad for her son Joshua. Dr. Leo O. Olarte, president of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and spokesman of the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM), said stem cell treatment experts in the Philippines are competent enough to help Aquino's 17-year-old son. We have the ethical, moral, safe and effective stem cell or regenerative medicine technology available in the country today," Olarte said in a statement released Wednesday. Olarte added that the Philippines does not only have internationally accepted stem cell technologies but also the competent medical doctors and experts. PSSCM has been closely working with the Department of Health (DOH) and currently in consultation with the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) Board of Medicine in our desire that the practice of stem cell therapy be highly regulated by our government to protect our patients from unscrupulous practices," he said. Olarte said they are willing to help Aquino if she considers getting the treatment for her son done in the Philippines. Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy and Expert Advisory Committee Releases Putting Patients First

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

HACKENSACK, N.J., April 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) has released Putting Patients First , a white paper outlining recommendations to speed responsible access to new therapies for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne) and other, rare, serious, and life-threatening neurological disorders. PPMD developed this white paper with an expert Advisory Committee on Policies to Promote Responsible Access to New Therapies, made up of leading authorities from the nonprofit, academic, medical, legal, and pharmaceutical sectors. Putting Patients First urges the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to work with PPMD and the rare disease community to take advantage of opportunities created by the 2012 passage of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act to enhance patient access to new therapies for serious and life-threatening disorders. In implementing the law, PPMD and the Advisory Committee encourage the FDA to "strike a more appropriate balance between clinical certainty and patient access to potentially life-saving treatments." The white paper makes four recommendations: Pat Furlong, Founding President and CEO of PPMD, hopes that Putting Patients First will illustrate the need for the FDA to accelerate approval of potentially life-saving drugs intended to treat rare disorders, like Duchenne. Says Furlong, "We have been … Continue reading

Merced firefighters' boots overflow with $11K raised for Muscular Dystrophy Association

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

The Merced Fire Department didn't just "Fill The Boot" on Tuesday -- it overflowed the boot with more than $11,000 in donations, a record for the annual fund-raiser. The funds benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and help send local kids to an annual camp. More than 20 fire personnel volunteered to raise money for the association during the seven-hour event at G Street and Olive Avenue. "We've had a great turnout from our members which helps us collect more donations," said Fire Capt. Cory Haas. "Merced has traditionally done a great job supporting Muscular Dystrophy Association." The fund-raiser, a 59-year-tradition in cities across the country, is supported by the local firefighters union. Chad Englert, union president and Fire Department engineer, said the event would not be possible without the public's support. "We want to thank the community for donating. They're the ones that make it possible," he said. "We're just out here facilitating." Englert's daughter, 4-year-old Amanda, was a big helper during Tuesday's fund-raiser. "I want to help Dada," she said. As cars passed by on G Street, firefighter Jeff Trost, who helped organize the event, took the time to spread the word about the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He caught … Continue reading
