By The Associated Press LAKE MARY, Fla. - A Florida-based compounding pharmacy is voluntarily recalling all lots of its sterile non-expired drug products sold nationwide over concerns the products are not sterile and may contain bacteria, Food and Drug Administration officials said Sunday. The FDA encouraged health care facilities and providers who have received sterile products, including all injectables, from Balanced Solutions Compounding Pharmacy to immediately check their medical supplies, quarantine the products, and follow the company's recall instructions. Patients who were administered any sterile drug products produced and distributed by Balanced Solutions should contact their health care providers. An FDA inspection of the company revealed "poor practices and conditions which may have exposed the company's sterile products to microbial contamination," officials said in a statement. The FDA sampled chromium chloride injections from Balanced Solutions and identified gram-negative bacteria in the product, which can cause disease and many types of infection. But officials said the bacteria do not usually cause infection in humans. Balanced Solutions is a division of Axium Healthcare Pharmacy Inc., which is … Continue reading

Stem cell donor ditches Stanford University professor

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2013

MUMBAI: Healthy stem cells from a person of the same genetic make can mean life for Stanford University professor Nalini Ambady, or death if she doesn't find a donor in a month's time. A matching donor, recently found in Mumbai after an almost six-month-long search across India, backed out after initially consenting to stem-cell donation. When her eight-year-old leukemia made a comeback last year, doctors in the US suggested she look for an Indian donor for a greater match probability, given ethnic similarities. After failing to find a match in the US' National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) that boasts of a database of 10 million registered donors, Ambady's family finally directed their search towards India last November. Yet, two prominent stem cell donor registries in India with a combined pool of 50,000 donors could not find a match until recently. Beating the odds of one in over 20,000, the unexpected happened last week when city-based Marrow Donor Registry of India (MDRI) found the Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLAs) match in a software engineer. HLA match refers to immunological compatibility, and doctors look for a match in at least 10 counts of crucial antigens to go ahead with a transplant. Coincidentally, not … Continue reading

Local family shows bravery in the face of Parkinson disease

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2013

By Kay Quinn Healthbeat Reporter ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Parkinson disease affects a million Americans. Actor Michael J. Fox has it, and St. Louis broadcaster Jack Buck was diagnosed before his death in 2002. Now, you can help support those with Parkinson by playing in a golf tournament to raise money for research and support for those with the disease. Here's a look what it means to live with this disease and the local effort to combat it. "We have always been an upbeat family," said Lynda Wiens, "you always look for a silver lining, and you always find one." Almost three decades ago, Lynda and Bob Wiens moved to St. Louis from Canada and raised two sons. She was a nurse, he was a cardiologist. Bob was the physician on call for visiting presidents, the pope, and the Dean of St. Louis University's Medical School. Then in the late 1980s he diagnosed himself with the symptoms of Parkinson disease. "My son was about nine years, 10-years-old probably, and he wanted to know why dad could play ball with him one day and not the other," recalled Lynda. Parkinson is a neurological disease that causes tremors, slow movements and problems … Continue reading
