Marking the Way for Alzheimer's Drugs

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2013

By David Williamson | More Articles April 19, 2013 | Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) has been rolling out diabetes and oncology drugs of late. In this video, David Williamson highlights Lilly's Alzheimer's drugs. Recently, Lilly bought two German imaging companies for undisclosed sums. It's not clear what these companies will do, but they could play a role in the detection, treatment, and monitoring of Alzheimer's, particularly the so-called amyloid plaques that characterize the disease. Also, Lilly has two different drugs targeting amyloid production in the brain, which may help slow or stop progression of the disease. Given the aging of the American population, if these drugs prove effective, they could be big revenue generators for Lilly. Is Eli Lilly a buy or sell? With two of its top three drugs poised to lose patent protection this year, is Eli Lilly a dividend stock headed nowhere fast? In a new premium report, The Motley Fool's senior pharmaceuticals analyst breaks down all of Lilly's moving parts, including an in-depth analysis of the company's must-know opportunities, and reasons to buy and sell today. China pharmaceutical drugs industry to become second largest in the world by 2015

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2013

China's pharmaceutical drugs industry has grown rapidly in the last few decades to become one of the top drug markets in the world. The value of the industry is forecast to reach over RMB 1 trillion during 2013, from a total of RMB 926.1 billion in 2012. Key factors which have aided the rise of the pharmaceutical drugs industry in China include the accelerating growth of the urban population, expansion of healthcare covering both rural and urban regions, and an increasingly ageing population. With a population over a fifth of the global population, China has a large base of consumers which need access to pharmaceutical drugs. It is forecast that in the next three years the industry will exhibit a CAGR of over 20% per year. This growth will see the country become the second largest pharmaceutical drugs market in the world by 2015. Since the late 1970s, when the Chinese authorities began reforming the healthcare sector, the industry has slowly opened up to the world. This gave overseas pharmaceutical manufacturers and producers the opportunity to invest in a huge market that used to be completely closed off to foreign competition. In 2012 sales from imported drugs amounted to around … Continue reading

U.S. drugs sting muddies Guinea-Bissau transition

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2013

By Richard Valdmanis DAKAR (Reuters) - A U.S. drugs sting targeting Guinea-Bissau's top military brass may freeze cocaine smuggling through the tiny West African state in the short term but could jeopardize efforts to restore order after a 2012 coup. The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday accused Armed Forces Chief General Antonio Indjai of plotting to traffic cocaine to the United States and sell weapons to Colombia's FARC rebels, after a months-long undercover operation that has also ensnared a former navy chief. But Indjai - widely seen as the country's most powerful man - remains in Bissau after evading the sting and the big question is how he will react to becoming a target for American law enforcement agents. Guinea-Bissau's caretaker government is due next month to publish a road map to elections that African and Western diplomats hope will close the book on decades of political turmoil since independence from Portugal in 1974. "The arrests could make some of the military and political leaders very nervous and less willing to carry on with a transition that might result in their demise," said Vincent Foucher, a researcher at International Crisis Group. "Or it could do the exact reverse and … Continue reading

ALS clinical trial approved for next phase of study

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2013

(WZZM) - Work in Michigan on a possible cure for a debilitiating disease has been approved to enter the next phase. The research involves stem cells injected directly into the spinal cords of patients with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. In 2011, WZZMvisited the stem cell lab at the University of Michigan where they were doing the research. At that time, neurologist Eva Feldman felt the research would lead to a cure in less than 10 years. Now after two years of phase one clinical trials, the FDA gave approval to move forward into phase two. "In this trial, we will be injecting stem cells into the upper part of the spinal cord of patients with ALS," said Dr. Feldman. "Our goal is to continue to show that this approach is safe and we will begin to look at whether this approach offers some benefit to our patients." The University of Michigan is now looking for approval to hold phase two trials here in Michigan. Fifteenpatients were part of the first phase of testing at Emory University in Georgia. Each received injections of up to 400,000 stem cells. You can find out more information on the trials by clicking here. … Continue reading
