VATICAN: A girl whose bones used to break every two months was awarded for her courage in successfully battling her disease during a stem cell research conference at the Vatican. It feels amazing to win an award like this, said Elizabeth Lobato, who was given the Pontifical Hero Award April 11 at the Second International Adult Stem Cell Conference in Vatican City. I heard I was the first to get this award from Rome and thats awesome, said the 14-year-old in an interview with CNA. Elizabeth was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly known as brittle bone disease, when she was just 10 months old. People affected by illness - which is caused by a genetic defect - often suffer from muscle weakness, hearing loss, loose joints, curved bones, scoliosis, brittle teeth and short stature. But the teenager has grown over 13 inches since she began the adult stem cell treatment that involves her receiving bone marrow-derived stem cells from her father. The teenager, still small for her age and currently in a wheelchair, is in Rome with her parents attending a conference promoting adult stem cell research. The conference began April 11 at the Vaticans New Synod Hall under the … Continue reading

Children with autism more preoccupied with video games; does treatment option lie there, too?

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2013

A report in Scicastssaid that 64.2 percent of the children and teens with autism spectrum disorder spend most of their free time using solitary screen-based media such as video games or TV. Only 13.2 percent spend time on interactive media like email or instant messaging. Laura Seitz, Deseret News Enlarge photo Children and teens with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) watch more screen-based media and are more apt to be preoccupied with video games than are their peers, according to research that included surveys and observation. Now experts wonder if there are treatment options to be found there as well. "Many parents and clinicians have noticed that children with ASD are fascinated with technology, and the results of our recent studies certainly support this idea," said Micah Mazurek, an assistant professor of health psychology and a clinical child psychologist at the University of Missouri, in a statement announcing the study. "We found that children with ASD spent much more time playing video games than typically developing children and they are much more likely to develop problematic or addictive patterns of video game play." A report in Scicasts said that 64.2 percent of the children and teens with ASD spend most of … Continue reading

Gordon Liu in dire straits after stroke

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2013

HONG KONG: Hong Kong veteran action star Gordon Liu, who suffered a stroke in 2011 that paralysed the right side of his body, and was hospitalised since January this year for severe cramps, recently cleared the air regarding the numerous reports about him and his estranged family, reported Hong Kong media. Although there were rumours that he had died, Liu is very much alive, though his health has deteriorated since his stroke. The 57-year-old actor appeared frail, skinny and had sunken cheeks when he met with Hong Kong media at the hospital where he is receiving treatment. He now weighed just 54kg, required constant care and found it difficult to speak, resorting to nodding and shaking his head to answer questions. However, Liu is in relatively good spirits, and managed to express that he hopes his former guardian, Eva Fung, who has refused to return his savings, which he had earlier entrusted to her, will do so. Liu also confirmed that he has appointed his actress friend, Amy Fan, as his new guardian, and expressed that he is happy in her care. Fan told Hong Kong media that she is currently trying to get Lius finances in order, pointing out … Continue reading

Former Packers coach Gregg fighting Parkinson's, not the NFL

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2013

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) Hall of Famer Forrest Gregg says that while he and his neurologist blame concussions for his Parkinson's disease, he's not going to sue the NFL like thousands of other former players. The 79-year-old says he doesn't begrudge those who have joined the lawsuits but he has his pensions from his playing and coaching days and "I don't need anything from anybody but what I earned." He said he's an "independent type" and doesn't believe in holding others accountable for his well-being. "And my experience in the National Football League was good," said Gregg, who is promoting UCB, Inc.'s "Parkinson's More Than Motion" campaign during Parkinson's Awareness Month. Gregg said he's doing well 18 months after his diagnosis and credits medicine, exercise and daily phone calls from his son and former teammates to reminisce about the good ol' days, which keeps his mind sharp. The former offensive lineman known as "Iron Man" said he wants to help others recognize the signs of Parkinson's and seek treatment early enough to delay the degenerative effects of the chronic, debilitating disease on both mind and body. When Gregg was diagnosed, his neurologist, Dr. Rajeev Kumar, a Parkinson's expert and medical … Continue reading
