Mr. Garr's panel, from 2:30 3:30, will discuss "TreatmentWhat's Working and What is Under Development." He will focus on NSI-189, Neuralstem's lead neurogenic compound, which is currently in a Phase Ib clinical trial in major depressive disorder (MDD). In animal models of depression, NSI-189 significantly increased the generation of new neurons in the hippocampus, a part of the brain that atrophies in patients who have major depression and which could also be implicated in brain injury. Mr. Garr will also talk about the potential of NSI-189 to be used in the treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI). (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20061221/DCTH007LOGO) About Neuralstem Neuralstem's patented technology enables the ability to produce neural stem cells of the human brain and spinal cord in commercial quantities, and the ability to control the differentiation of these cells constitutively into mature, physiologically relevant human neurons and glia. New centre opened for MS patients in Norfolk

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2013

Centre manager Paul Ray, Diane Proctor, and Norwich clinical director of neurology Dr Jeff Cochius official open the new location of the Norwich and district branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society at Alkmaar Way, Norwich. PHOTO BY SIMON FINLAY Patients with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions in Norfolk are set to get more support following the opening of a new centre. To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in. Officials and supporters from the Norwich and district branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society gathered yesterday for an open day at their new base, which will provide a range of support, treatment and therapy services. The official opening of the 250,000 centre, near Norwich International Airport, follows 12 years of fundraising by volunteers and an extensive search to find larger premises in the Norwich area. The facility replaces the branchs cramped headquarters in Witard Road and was funded solely on local fundraising and donations. Officials from the MS Society branch hope to double their membership, which currently stands at 400 people from across Norfolk, with the opening of the centre at Iceni Court in Alkmaar Way, which has consulting and therapy rooms as … Continue reading

Production of toxic protein causes common neurodegenerative disorder

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2013

Apr. 18, 2013 Researchers have recently discovered that an expansion of DNA in patients with the common neurodegenerative disorder Fragile X-associated Tremor syndrome causes the production of an abnormal protein that is toxic to neurons. The findings, which are reported online April 18 in the Cell Press journal Neuron, suggest an unexpected process by which DNA expansions might lead to neurodegenerative diseases -- including Huntington's disease and ALS. This discovery reveals a common feature among these diseases that could be targeted to treat affected individuals. The length of this particular DNA region is short and is not read, or translated, into a protein in normal individuals. "What we found surprised us -- in cell culture models and in fly models of the human disease, the DNA expansion was in fact being translated into an aberrant protein that we call FMR1polyG," says first author Dr. Peter Todd, of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. "This protein was not translated in the same way as typical proteins, though. Rather, the expansion allowed protein translation to begin in the absence of a typical starting signal that's normally required for this process." This abnormal protein translation event, called "RAN" translation, occurs with different … Continue reading

Toxic protein made in unusual way may explain brain disorder

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2013

Apr. 18, 2013 A bizarre twist on the usual way proteins are made may explain mysterious symptoms in the grandparents of some children with mental disabilities. The discovery, made by a team of scientists at the University of Michigan Medical School, may lead to better treatments for older adults with a recently discovered genetic condition. The condition, called Fragile X-associated Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS), causes shakiness and balance problems and is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease. The grandchildren of people with the disease have a separate disorder called Fragile X syndrome, caused by problems in the same gene. The new discovery may also help shine light on that disease, though indirectly. In a new paper published in the journal Neuron, the U-M-led team presents evidence that a toxic protein they've named FMRpolyG contributes to the death of nerve cells in FXTAS -- and that this protein is made in a very unusual way. Normally, DNA is transcribed into RNA, and then a part of the RNA is translated into a protein that performs its function in cells. Where this translation process starts on the RNA is usually determined by a specific sequence called a start codon. The gene mutation that … Continue reading

Silva hits out at hormone therapy in UFC

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2013

Rio de Janeiro, April 19 (IANS) Brazil's mixed martial arts middleweight champion Anderson Silva said he was against the use of hormone replacement therapy in the sport. Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort are among competitors to have been given permission to use the treatment by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), reports Xinhua. "I am no expert on the subject but the use of it ends up giving an athlete an edge over his opponent," Silva told Lancenet. "It is unfair. I am not perfect but I have never needed hormone replacement therapy and I think that when you do need it, either you are too old to fight or you have used a prohibited substance for a long time that has stopped your body from producing what it should." Silva, who has not lost a UFC bout since 2006, will defend his world title against American Chris Weidman in Las Vegas July 6.
