New Diabetes Drug Expected This Week

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

By Kathleen Doheny WebMD Health News Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD April 11, 2013 -- A new oral diabetes drug is expected to arrive on pharmacy shelves in the U.S. this week. Many people predict that Invokana (canagliflozin), approved by the FDA in March, will be a brisk seller. That's partly because it treats type 2 diabetes in a new way. It's also because Invokana not only helped patients improve blood sugar control, but also lose weight and control their high blood pressure, according to maker Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies. Losing weight can help people control their diabetes. In one 26-week study, those on Invokana lost about 6 to 8 pounds, while those in the placebo group lost only about a pound. But the drug has side effects, including infections of the urinary tract, penis, and vagina. This leads some experts to have less enthusiasm for the new medicine. It will also cost a lot more than other diabetes drugs. The wholesale cost for Invokana is $8.77 a pill, according to Katie Mahony, a spokeswoman for Janssen. Retail cost for the 100-milligram starting dose, without co-pays or coverage, is about $10 a pill, or $300 a month. The popular diabetes drug … Continue reading

Oxnard's Freedom House marks 15 years helping men through recovery

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

For 15 years Freedom House has lived up to its name. The large Victorian home at 460 South F. St. in Oxnard has served as refuge for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. Director Jeff Simpson was a former client at the home when it was a state-licensed rehabilitation facility under the name Primary Purpose, which declared bankruptcy in 1995. The location has served its residents for nearly 35 year. Now a sober living home, Freedom House has provided a haven for hundreds of men eager to free themselves from alcohol and drug dependency. There were people who didnt think this would last, Simpson said. Simpson started the program in 1998, believing the strength God gave him to recover from his own addiction would help him help others. It wasnt easy at the beginning, said Simpson, who was in the restaurant business for more than 20 years but has no formal business education. Simpson worked hard to get recognition from jail officials, probation officers, mental health workers and others. The facility can accommodate 21 men in the main house and seven more in a house on the back of the property, set aside for graduates who have been with the program … Continue reading

Lily's Place to Help Drug Addicted Babies Heal

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The prescription drug problem throughout our region is no secret, but it's not often you think about it's youngest and most vulnerable victims: newborn babies. The rate at which these babies, born with a dependency to drugs, is alarming. Cabell Huntington Hospital is known across the nation for helping these babies heal. Babies born with this type of dependency require a longer hospital stay, an extra special attention and care. Neonatologist Sean Loudin sees it first hand. "We have realized the number of babies that are addicted are putting an extreme burden on the hospital systems," Dr. Loudin went on to say, "We don't want to take up intensive care space with these babies because there are other preterm babies that need help and if we can provide a way for the babies to get the care they need in an appropriate setting, this is really our goal." Lily's place is the dream of Mary Calhoun Brown. A woman who has cradled these babies, who need extra love and attention, in her arms. The old podiatry office, with dozens of exam rooms, in the 1300-block of 7th Avenue will be the home for Lily's Place. "Each … Continue reading

Diluted chemo drugs given to 26 other Ontario patients

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

A hospital in London, Ont., says 26 more cancer patients received overdiluted chemotherapy drugs, raising the number of people affected in that province and New Brunswick to 1,202. The new total for London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is 691 651 adults and 40 children, the hospital said Friday. Of the adults, the hospital said it believes 117 died. What potential role the diluted chemotherapy may have played in the deaths is unknown. "Given the significant number of LHSC patients impacted and the compressed timeline for the initial file assessment, LHSC has since conducted a second review as a due diligence measure," the hospital said on its website. "Today, as a result of this final review, LHSC is reporting publicly that an additional 26 patients have been identified as being impacted by the chemotherapy compounding issue. "At this time, we have attempted to call all 26 patients and sent letters as well, to express our sincere regret that they, too, are impacted, said Neil Johnson, the hospital's vice president of cancer care. On Thursday, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne vowed to correct any issues that led to the diluted chemotherapy problem. All 77 hospitals that provide chemotherapy have verified their remaining drug … Continue reading

Drugs in sport like arms race

Former California Governor and movie megastar, Arnold Schwarzenegger has hit thespeaking circuit. Picture: Glen McCurtayne/Coleman-Rayner Source: Supplied Arnold Schwarzenegger in his bodybuilding days. Source: Supplied FORMER muscle man, actor and Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has compared Australian sport's drug scandal to the missile crisis on the Korean peninsula. In a wide-ranging interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the "Governator" described the development of new steroids and performance-enhancing drugs as an "arms race" and drug tests as "missile defence systems". And if anybody in the world can offer an opinion on the two subjects, it's Mr Schwarzenegger. The ex-Mr Universe admitted to steroid use during his bodybuilding days in the 1970s, and also served in the Austrian armed forces at the peak of the Cold War. "The drug makers are very clever," Mr Schwarzenegger said. "They are constantly developing new drugs and substances that are undetectable. "It's like the missile crisis we are seeing at the moment, one side develops a new missile which means the other side has to develop a new defence." Mr Schwarzenegger said the Australian government needed to legislate for more frequent drug tests to avoid the scandal ruining sport forever. "I would say the only way around … Continue reading

Pharmacy approval celebrated in Ashtead

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

A DECISION to allow a pharmacy to open at an Ashtead site has been called "a brilliant victory for common sense and people power". Community groups, councillors and the village's MP Chris Grayling all supported Abdool Kureemans plans to open a pharmacy in The Street but his battle to do so has lasted more than a year. Older people had led the calls for a chemist shop to open in the villages main shopping street ever since Lloyds Pharmacy closed in February last year. Since then, they have had to travel to Lower Ashtead for medicines, a situation that led Mr Kureeman to seek permission to open a replacement at the Lloyds site. But to the astonishment of many villagers, the application by Mr Kureeman, who already runs the popular Buckley Pharmacy in Lower Ashtead, was rejected by health bosses amid opposition from Lloyds. Undeterred, he turned his attention to the former Barclays Bank site, also in The Street, and after further opposition from Lloyds and an agonising wait, he learned this week that the Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust had approved his application for a pharmacy there. I am elated, he said. Ive been waiting for more than … Continue reading

Bankruptcy estate of meningitis-linked pharmacy to battle states

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

By Tim McLaughlin BOSTON (Reuters) - The bankruptcy estate of the pharmacy linked to a deadly U.S. meningitis outbreak plans to battle nearly 30 states to preserve its right to redeem several million dollars worth of insurance policies for creditors. The insurance policies are key assets in New England Compounding Center's bankruptcy estate. Paul Moore, the trustee for NECC's bankruptcy estate, requested court approval to hire Collora LLP, a Boston law firm known for its high-profile defense work, according to documents filed on Friday. Collora would battle pharmacy board regulators from at least 28 states and contend with an ongoing, previously disclosed investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, according to the trustee. Creditors in the bankruptcy include the victims of the outbreak, court records show. Their claims, however, are much larger than NECC's assets, which have been listed at between $1 million and $10 million. In January, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Henry Boroff temporarily restricted NECC's owners from selling their luxury homes or spending up to $21 million they received last year in salary and shareholder distributions. The Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors, which represents meningitis victims, has said it would like to claw back that money for the bankruptcy estate. … Continue reading
