RI Hospital: Traumatic brain injury worsens outcomes for those with nonepileptic seizures

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2013

Public release date: 8-Apr-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Ellen Slingsby eslingsby@lifespan.org 401-444-6421 Lifespan PROVIDENCE, R.I. A new study by a Rhode Island Hospital researcher has found that traumatic brain injury (TBI) can significantly increase the odds of having major depression, personality impulsivity and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES). The paper, by W. Curt LaFrance Jr., M.D., M.P.H., director of neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology, is published online in advance of print in the journal Epilepsia. "Some patients who sustain a TBI develop seizures," LaFrance said. "Very often, these seizures are believed to be epileptic in nature, and the patient, therefore, is treated for epilepsy. Later the seizures are found to be PNES. This study demonstrates the prevalence of co-morbid mild TBI and PNES, which could suggest that some patients are being inappropriately treated for epilepsy with antiepileptic drugs, while not being treated for their actual illness: nonepileptic seizures." In this study, which compared patients with PNES and TBI to those without TBI, LaFrance found that 45 percent of patients with PNES also had TBI, and 73 percent of those TBIs were mild TBI. Patients who suffered a TBI had more mood disorder … Continue reading

Severe MS left Annette Funicello unable to walk, speak

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2013

Annette Funicello's husband describes how at age 70, the former entertainer had become unable to walk or speak, due to the effects of multiple sclerosis. CTV reports. By Linda Carroll After battling multiple sclerosis for decades, Annette Funicello died today from complications of the disease. That doesnt mean that MS actually killed her, says Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl, a professor in the department of neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles and director of the UCLA MS program. MS does not directly shorten the lifespan, Voskuhl explains. It doesnt kill people directly. If youve had a very severe form for a very, very long time you can have the same complications that anyone has who is immobilized. You can get pneumonia. You can get bed sores. You can have difficulty eating. These days the prognosis for the vast majority of MS patients is better than it was when Funicello was diagnosed because there are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease. There was a revolution in MS drugs in the late 90s, Voskuhl says. Those drugs dont stop the disease, but they slow it down. If you were diagnosed years ago, before there were good treatments, many brain … Continue reading

Artificial Ovary Offers More Natural Hormone Replacement

Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Endocrinology Also Included In: Women's Health / Gynecology Article Date: 09 Apr 2013 - 5:00 PDT Current ratings for: Artificial Ovary Offers More Natural Hormone Replacement 5 (2 votes) Ovaries produce eggs and also secrete sex hormones that are important for women's bone and heart health. Women who are post-menopausal or whose ovaries are damaged or have been removed, don't produce sex hormones, which can lead to undesirable effects ranging from hot flashes and vaginal dryness to infertility. There is also an increased risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. But while drug-based hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help, it is often not recommended for long-term use due to the increased risk of heart disease and breast cancer. Reporting in the March issue of Biomaterials, Emmanuel Opara at Wake Forest University, North Carolina, and colleagues, describe how using tissue from rats, they made a bioartificial ovary by placing two hormone-producing ovary cells in an algal capsule to simulate the natural follicular environment, and then stimulated it using pituitary gland hormones. The capsule has a membrane that is thin enough to allow oxygen and nutrients to enter. For the study, the team isolated two types of … Continue reading

Vatican supports adult stem cell research

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2013

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican on Thursday will organise a conference to promote adult stem cell research as an alternative to research using destroyed human embryos, which is considered by the Roman Catholic Church as deeply unethical and less effective. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Culture, at a briefing on Tuesday said several leading world scientists would attend including Britain's John Gurdon, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine last year. Ravasi said the upcoming meeting showed that the Church did "not intervene only negatively" in the debate on stem cell research and that its commitment to finding cures was not only "words". The cardinal said he would personally present Pope Francis with the results of the three-day conference, which will include examples of successful therapy using adult stem cells. The conference follows a similar one held in November 2011 and like the previous one it is being organised together with the US laboratory NeoStem, headed up by Robin Smith, who is also president of the "Stem for Life Foundation".
