Understanding autism ‘s many complexities

Early detection key in managing symptoms Treating autism in adults or children usually requires a multi-disciplinary approach, but I can offer some insights into the condition itself, and the role a psychiatrist can provide in helping with this disorder. What is autism? Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a range of complex neurodevelopmental disorders. A person with autism typically has difficulty with social skills and communicating, and often exhibits restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. The most severe form of autistic disorder is frequently called autism, or classical ASD, while the milder form is known as Asperger's disorder. In between these two polar points are other variations of the disorder that vary widely from individual to individual. When a person fits the criteria of neither diagnosis, but is substantially affected by some of the symptoms, he or she may be appropriately diagnosed with pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified (PDD NOS). Experts believe that some form of autism afflicts six children out of every 1,000. It is seen in every ethnic and socioeconomic group, and affects males four times more often than females. What are common signs of autism? A key autism indicator is impaired social interaction. A baby with … Continue reading

See Inside Neurodegenerative disorders devastate the brain, but doctors hope one day to replace lost cells By Ferris Jabr BRAIN GROWTH: To replace brain cells lost to neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, some researchers are experimenting with grafts of fetal brain tissue and injections of young neurons grown from stem cells in the lab. Image: Bryan Christie Inside the human brain, branching neurons grow beside, around and on top of one another like trees in a dense forest. Scientists used to think that any neurons that wilted and died from injury or disease were gone forever because the brain had no way to replace those cells. By the 1990s, however, most neuroscientists had accepted that the adult brain cultivates small gardens of stem cells that can turn into mature neurons. This article was originally published with the title Replanting the Brain's Forest. Newswise Washington, D.C. (April 6, 2013) Researchers from Tel Aviv University describe experiments that could lead to a new approach for treating Parkinsons disease (PD) using a common sweetener, mannitol. This research is presented today at the Genetics Society of Americas 54th Annual Drosophila Research Conference in Washington D.C., April 3-7, 2013. Mannitol is a sugar alcohol familiar as a component of sugar-free gum and candies. Originally isolated from flowering ash, mannitol is believed to have been the manna that rained down from the heavens in biblical times. Fungi, bacteria, algae, and plants make mannitol, but the human body cant. For most commercial uses it is extracted from seaweed although chemists can synthesize it. And it can be used for more than just a sweetener. The Food and Drug Administration approved mannitol as an intravenous diuretic to flush out excess fluid. It also enables drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), the tightly linked cells that form the walls of capillaries in the brain. The tight junctions holding together the cells of these tiniest blood vessels come slightly apart five minutes after an infusion of mannitol into the carotid artery, and they stay open for about 30 minutes. Mannitol has … Continue reading

Parents came up with the idea after scouring the internet for treatment Mother Sara's joy at seeing her son walk for the first time 'I noticed the difference as soon as we got home... it was amazing' By Daily Mail Reporter PUBLISHED: 10:55 EST, 6 April 2013 | UPDATED: 10:59 EST, 6 April 2013 Brave: Cerebral palsy sufferer Aiden Farrel, three, stands with his legs straight after receiving 12 botox injections Brave toddler Aiden Farrell has taken his first steps after having injections of the anti-ageing cosmetic drug botox in his legs. Aiden, three, was born with crippling cerebral palsy and his muscles tightened up so much so he was unable to straighten his legs without feeling terrible pain. The toddlers parents Sara and Gevun scoured the internet for treatment and discovered the wrinkle-busting injections before presenting the idea to NHS bosses. Botox injections work by unblocking nerve impulses which restrict his movement - the same way celebrities use it to combat the effects of ageing. Mother-of-four Sara, 31, from Gosport, Hampshire, said: 'Seeing Aiden take his first steps is something I never dreamed would be possible. 'I noticed as soon as we got home after having the treatment the … Continue reading

It was Superbowl Sunday of 2007, and Karen Cadle of Jackson, Miss., was lighting a stack of firewood in her fireplace to stay warm on a chilly winter night. Little did Karen know that the logs had been sprayed with cyanide poisoning a few hours earlier. Nor did she ever guess that lighting the match would cause a traumatic brain injury and change her life irrevocably. But within minutes of starting the fire, Karen could tell that something was seriously wrong. Twenty minutes later, I could tell I was having a severe allergic reaction, Karen recalls. The next day, I went to the doctor with a high fever and raw throat and sinuses. As it turned out, the toxic fumes that Karen inhaled damaged her sinuses, throat, lungs and brain, completely wiping out her short-term memory and logic function. RELATED: The 5 Most Effective Brain Boosters Before, I was a high-functioning, high IQ, senior-level executive. I was proficient at math and logic, Karen says. The accident shut it all down. No longer able to perform at an optimal level, Karen was forced to give up her 23-year career in the hospitality industry. This was one of the most challenging parts … Continue reading
