Next-Generation Circulating Tumor Cell Test Demonstrates High Efficiency and Accuracy in New Study

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

RARITAN, N.J., April 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Veridex, LLC (Veridex) announced today that the first study of the company's next-generation circulating tumor cell (CTC) technology, developed in collaboration with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), has been published in Science Translational Medicine. The collaboration, initially announced in January 2011, has led to the development of a next-generation CTC (or "liquid biopsy") technology that offers enhanced specificity and sensitivity and enables more extensive characterization of captured cells. The new technology tests for CTCs from the blood of cancer patients using advanced microfluidic separation techniques integrated with innovative magnetic sorting to isolate a broad spectrum of rare circulating cancer cells. This technology will allow physicians to get information about a patient's cancer at the time treatment is being administered, one of the key components to enabling personalized medicine. Results from the in vitro study showed the integrated system enabled the processing of large blood volumes with high throughput and efficiency, and also allowed for the ability to isolate CTCs from both epithelial and non-epithelial cancers. In the study, the technology was used to identify the presence of CTCs in patients with cancers of the lung, prostate, pancreas, breast, as well as melanoma. … Continue reading

B.C. judge OKs class-action lawsuit over erectile dysfunction link to drug for baldness, prostate issues

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

VANCOUVER - Men who suffered ongoing erectile dysfunction after taking prescription drugs to treat prostate problems and male pattern baldness will be able to pursue a class-action lawsuit against the drug maker, a B.C. judge has ruled. The lawsuit was brought by Michael Miller against Merck Frosst Canada, makers of Propecia and Proscar, two drugs that contain the medication finasteride. Miller was 25 in 2008, when he said he obtained a prescription for Proscar from his doctor, according to a written court ruling. Although that drug is for the treatment of prostate problems, it contains the same medication as Propecia, used to treat male pattern baldness. Miller said he was advised to cut the five milligram tablet into four, making it roughly the same as the more expensive one-milligram Propecia tablets. "Approximately one month after using Proscar the plaintiff alleges he experienced a diminished sex drive," said the March 28 written decision by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Punnett posted Tuesday on the court website. "Over the ensuing months, he became completely disinterested in sexual activity and was unable to maintain an erection." Miller came across a website where other men linked sexual dysfunction to the drugs months after they … Continue reading

Biosimilars Bill Seeks To Notify Patients & Doctors of Changes to Prescriptions

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and BioFlorida commend the Florida Senate Committee on Health Policy for passage of Senate Bill 732 out of committee today. If signed into law, this legislation will ensure doctors are made aware that biosimilar medicines were substituted for interchangeable biologic medicines by a pharmacist.Furthermore, this bill seeks to ensure records of biosimilar substitution are kept for a reasonable amount of time. The policies outlined in Senate Bill 732 align with all five of BIOs principles on biologic substitution. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees approval of biologic medicines, policies governing whether one product may be substituted in place of a doctor's prescription and whether a pharmacist must notify a consumer are covered by state law. This legislation properly preserves the physician-patient relationship, protects patient access to accurate prescription information, maintains incentives for innovation and promotes a competitive market for biologic therapies. This bill is a model for legislation necessary in all 50 states to address this cutting-edge technology. Biosimilars are not generics. Even slight changes to a biologic drug can change its properties entirely. Unlike conventional generic medicines, biosimilars are not the same as the drugs they seek to substitute. … Continue reading

Statin side effects can often be overcome, study finds

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

Most people who stop taking cholesterol-lowering statins - because of side effects or for another reason - are able to restart the same drug or a similar one without lasting problems, a new study suggests. That's important because for people who need statins, quitting them for good increases the chance of serious heart problems, researchers said, so doctors and patients should think carefully before letting milder reactions lead them to give up on the drugs altogether. "It's really common that patients hear from their friends or read on the Internet that there are all these side effects and they say, I'll never take a statin again,'" said Dr. Alexander Turchin, who worked on the new study at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. But most side effects are "not an absolute contraindication," he told Reuters Health. "There might be a way around it, so it's really worth giving it at least one more try." About one-quarter of U.S. adults age 45 and older take statins to protect against heart attacks and strokes. The drugs are especially recommended for people with diabetes or a history of cardiovascular problems. They run anywhere from $11 to more than $200 per month. Side effects … Continue reading

DrugRisk Adds Study Showing Pradaxa May Increase Viral Infection Risk

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

Denver, CO (PRWEB) April 03, 2013 The prescription drug safety advocates at DrugRisk.com are alerting patients of new information on the site for those taking the blood thinner Pradaxa. A new study from The University of North Carolina suggests the atrial fibrillation drug may increase the chances of contracting some viral infections****. DrugRisk was created to improve the safety of those taking prescription drugs by sharing the latest warnings, recalls, studies and legal news. Patients can see if others are experiencing similar side effects and decide if they need legal advice. Experts have disagreed over whether Pradaxa, launched in 2010 to prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation, causes higher risks of internal bleeding. The FDA recently advised that Pradaxa is no more dangerous than traditional blood thinner warfarin*. The Institute for Safe Medication Practices, however, ranked blood thinners like Pradaxa among the most dangerous drugs, and warned that patients suffering Pradaxa bleeding are almost 5 times as likely to die than those with bleeding from warfarin**. Researchers with the University of Illinois at Chicago also recently warned that the data used by the FDA may be flawed, and the risk for bleeding from Pradaxa may be higher than previously … Continue reading
