Nobel Laureate Professor Shinya Yamanaka to give a lecture on latest progress in stem cell research at Biopolis and share insights on stem cell research with A*STAR scientific leaders. 1. Professor Shinya Yamanaka, Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology 2012, has been invited to speak at Biopolis under the A*STAR Biomedical Research Council Distinguished Visitor Programme (DVP). Professor Yamanakas discovery of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells in 2006, won him the Nobel Prize and revolutionised the stem cell field. Since then, iPS cells have been used to study cell therapy, disease mechanisms, and new drug developments worldwide. For Professor Yamanakas biography, please refer to Annex A. 2. Professor Yamanaka will be giving a scientific lecture today on the recent progress in induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell research. Stem cells hold enormous potential in healthcare and medical sector as a renewable source of replacement tissues for regenerative medicine therapies. However, strict evaluation methods of selecting good iPS cell source for transplantation are essential to realise the promise of regenerative medicine. Professor Yamanaka will speak about the latest efforts to standardise iPS cells in clinical grade and to construct the basis of iPS cell stock. Details and an abstract of the lecture … Continue reading

3-D stem cell culture technique developed to better understand Alzheimer's disease

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

Apr. 2, 2013 A team of researchers at The New York Stem Cell Foundation Research Institute led by Scott Noggle, PhD, Director of the NYSCF Laboratory and the NYSCF -- Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer's Disease, and Michael W. Nestor, PhD, a NYSCF Postdoctoral Research Fellow, has developed a technique to produce three-dimensional cultures of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells called embryoid bodies, amenable to live cell imaging and to electrical activity measurement. As reported in their Stem Cell Research study, these cell aggregates enable scientists to both model and to study diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The NYSCF Alzheimer's disease research team aims to better understand and to find treatments to this disease through stem cell research. For such disorders in which neurons misfire or degenerate, the NYSCF team creates "disease in a dish" models by reprogramming patients' skin and or blood samples into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells that can become neurons and the other brain cells affected in the diseases. The cells in our body form three-dimensional networks, essential to tissue function and overall health; however, previous techniques to form complex brain tissue resulted in structures that, while similar in form to naturally … Continue reading

KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 (Bernama) -- The public is urged to cease using the traditional pill 'Sta-lions' because it contains scheduled poison 'tadalafil' which can cause several side effects. Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, the Drug Control Authority has cancelled the registration of the product on March 28 after it was found to contain poison which could lead to damage or loss of vision and hearing, sudden and dangerous drop in blood pressure, stroke and heart attack. The licence holder of the product is Together Link Enterprise, Penang and its manufacturer is DZ Trade (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd in Kedah, he said in a statement. He said, Tadalafil is a medicine which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, and prior to this it could only be supplied by a doctor or obtained from pharmacies on a doctor's prescription. Those who had stock of the product were told to stop its sale, distribution or usage immediately, he said. Individuals who contavened the rule could be fined not exceeding RM25,000 or jailed not more than three years or both for a first offence and fined not more than RM50,000 or jailed not more than five years or both for subsequent … Continue reading

Statin Side Effects Often Manageable: Study

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

People who quit may do better with different type or dose of cholesterol-lowering drugs WebMD News from HealthDay By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter MONDAY, April 1 (HealthDay News) -- Many people who quit taking their cholesterol-lowering statin drugs because of side effects can successfully try again, a new study suggests. Researchers found that of more than 100,000 Boston-area adults who started a statin drug, 17 percent stopped taking it because of side effects -- most often, muscle aches. But within a year, more than half gave statins another chance, and most -- 90 percent -- were able to stick with it. Experts said the findings, reported in the April 2 issue of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, show that people need not abandon statins if a potential side effect crops up. In some cases, the problem may not be caused by the drug at all, said senior researcher Dr. Alexander Turchin, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "Muscle pain can happen with statins," he said, "but it can also have many other causes." In other cases, Turchin said, people are having a real side effect, but might do better with a lower dose or with a different statin. … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 02, 2013 The birth control safety advocates at DrugRisk.com are announcing new information on the site for women who have taken the drugs Yaz or Yasmin. The manufacturer, Bayer, will now compensate certain patients who allege gallbladder injuries, in addition to the ongoing settlements for blood clots*. The goal of DrugRisk is to improve patient safety by providing the latest warnings, recalls, studies and litigation news. Visitors can learn if others have experienced similar side effects and decide if they need legal help to join current litigation. The resource center has learned that Bayer will designate $24 million to compensate patients who allege gallbladder injuries after taking Yaz or Yasmin*. While this could affect as many as 8,000 patients, payouts are only estimated at $2,000 to $3,000*. Thousands more have filed a Yaz lawsuit alleging blood clot injuries, which were consolidated to a special federal Multi-District Litigation court in Illinois. The case is known as Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2100, Southern District Illinois). Experts with the British Medical Journal and FDA have alerted patients that birth control pills containing drospirenone, like Yaz and Yasmin, can increase … Continue reading
