Statin Side Effects Are Usually Overcome

Editor's Choice Academic Journal Main Category: Statins Also Included In: Cardiovascular / Cardiology;Cholesterol Article Date: 02 Apr 2013 - 0:00 PDT Current ratings for: Statin Side Effects Are Usually Overcome The authors believe that the majority of statin-related side effects are bearable and probably have other causes. It is possible that they may be specific to the individual statin medication, rather than the entire drug class, they added. This is important, because quitting statins forever can significantly raise a patient's risk of serious heart problems. Patients and their doctors need to think carefully before changing their prescription program. In a previous study, researchers at the Center for Healthy Aging at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology that an estimated 75% of patients on statins report symptoms of muscle pain, which can lead to problems with adherence (compliance). The researchers in this latest study explained, as background information, that patients often give up taking their statins because of the side effects. However, studies on why this occurs have been limited. Dr. Alexander Turchin and team set out to determine why people discontinued their statin therapy, as well as listing the type of … Continue reading

Statin side effects : Brigham and Women’s Hospital study indicates they usually go away

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

By Deborah Kotz, Globe Staff Statins have a great track record for lowering cholesterol and helping heart disease patients live longer, but about half of those taking statins stop taking the drugs at some point -- often due to side effects. Now a Brigham and Womens Hospital study suggests that more than 90 percent of patients who go back on statins dont have the same troubles the second time around. What we found is that if someone has to go off of a statin due to side effects like muscle aches, it may be worth trying the drug again, especially if a person has had a previous heart attack or stroke or has established heart disease, said Dr. Alexander Turchin, the senior author of the study and an endocrinologist at the Brigham. Those with diabetes or those who have very elevated cholesterol levels -- a low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level of greater than 160 milligrams per deciliter -- should also seriously consider re-starting a statin if they had previous mild side effects, because theyre also at increased risk of having a future heart attack or stroke, Turchin recommended. He and his colleagues examined electronic medical records from nearly 108,000 … Continue reading

Statin side effects can often be overcome: study

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

By Genevra Pittman NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Most people who stop taking cholesterol-lowering statins - because of side effects or for another reason - are able to restart the same drug or a similar one without lasting problems, a new study suggests. That's important because for people who need statins, quitting them for good increases the chance of serious heart problems, researchers said, so doctors and patients should think carefully before letting milder reactions lead them to give up on the drugs altogether. "It's really common that patients hear from their friends or read on the Internet that there are all these side effects and they say, I'll never take a statin again,'" said Dr. Alexander Turchin, who worked on the new study at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. But most side effects are "not an absolute contraindication," he told Reuters Health. "There might be a way around it, so it's really worth giving it at least one more try." About one-quarter of U.S. adults age 45 and older take statins to protect against heart attacks and strokes. The drugs are especially recommended for people with diabetes or a history of cardiovascular problems. They run anywhere from $11 … Continue reading

Prescription Drug Abuse Rates Increase in the Western United States, Northwest Now Leading Area of Epidemic

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

A new study conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and published in the Wall Street Journal revealed that the prescription painkiller epidemic (which has been prevalent throughout the Eastern and Southern United States for years) recently showed a statistical increase in the Western region of the country, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Malibu, CA (PRWEB) April 01, 2013 It is alarming that with all of the educational and prevention efforts regarding painkiller abuse, the problem is still increasing in some areas, said Pax Prentiss, CEO and co-founder of the Passages Addiction Treatment Centers in Malibu and Ventura, California. At Passages, we treat people dependent on prescription medications from all over the country. Unfortunately, prescription drugs are now more common than all other illegal drugs and street narcotics combined. Western states including Idaho, Oregon, and Washington have had a long running public problem with methamphetamine production particularly in more rural areas and drug enforcement agencies theorize that the time and resources spent combating meth abuse and production has allowed the influx of prescription pain killers to go relatively unnoticed. According to SAMHSA, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, and Idaho now have the highest rates of prescription drug abuse … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

The Ford Street Project Alcohol and Drug Treatment for Veterans got underway in August with a $130,000 federally-funded contract to support veterans to get clean and sober and usher them into productive, meaningful lives. Mark Messerer, Ford Street Program Director, oversees the operation. He is a veteran himself of this kind of work having been a senior Mendocino County Drug and Alcohol Program therapist for seven years, a Lake County Alcohol and Drug Services treatment coordinator for five years and more than five years in his present position. Touring the Ford Street facility Messerer says, "We are a 32-bed licensed and certified residential treatment and detoxification facility." He points out the sweat lodge structure where sweats are led three times a month by local tribal elders and the four townhouse units for participants of family dependency drug court. They house men, women and couples involved with Child Protective Services cases in the process of reunifying with their children working in partnership with Alcohol and Other Drug Programs and the courts. One participant in the new program, a 52-year-old veteran, has been there for more than 90 days. He was previously living in Eureka, homeless and on probation. "About a year … Continue reading

India's Victory for Generic Drugs Could Be a Defeat for Future Investment

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

Rafiq Maqbool / AP Ranjit Shahani, vice chairman and managing director of Novartis India, speaks during a news conference in Mumbai on April 1, 2013 In a decisive victory for Indias pharmaceutical industry, Indias Supreme Court rejected Novartis patent application for the cancer drug Glivec on Monday, ending a seven-year battle by the Swiss drugmaker to get a patent in India on its powerful leukemia drug. The medication, which was approved for use in the U.S. back in 2001, has been produced generically by Indian pharmaceuticals for years at a fraction of the Swiss drugs cost. The Indian drug industrys victory, however, is being described as a stunning defeat for intellectual-property rights and may have repercussions on Indias attempts to attract foreign investment. Nevertheless, health activists have called the top courts decision a win for patients seeking cheaper treatment and against evergreening, the alleged practice of making minor tweaks to an existing drug to prolong a companys hold on a patent and protect it from being produced by other firms as a cheaper generic version once the patent has expired. The ruling was met with enthusiasm by Indian drug manufacturers, which produce a generic version of Glivec, or Gleevec, as … Continue reading

Messenger RNAs Could Create a New Class of Drugs

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013

New partnerships could help bring a novel class of biopharmaceutical to patients. Messenger RNAsmolecules that carry information between the genome and the protein-building machinery of cellscould become the next big class of biopharmaceutical drug. These molecules were once thought unusable as drugs because they are notoriously fragile and could rouse an inflammatory immune response. Now, thanks to several recent scientific discoveries, they are attracting the increasing attention of pharmaceutical companies. Recently, the pharmaceutical heavyweight AstraZeneca announced it would pay Moderna Therapetuics $240 million for rights to the startups mRNA technology, which it will use to develop treatments for cardiovascular, metabolic, and cancer patients. Inside a cell, mRNA serves as an intermediary between DNA-encoding genes and their protein products. As a drug, an mRNA would supply the biological instructions for producing a protein inside cells, perhaps a protein that replaces a missing or broken version inherited as part of a genetic disorder. In some ways, an mRNA would be more efficient than DNA-based gene therapy (which would require the cells to make their own mRNA intermediary before producing a protein) and more effective than recombinant protein therapy. While several companies are developing therapeutic gene-silencing RNAs, which inhibit damaging proteins from being … Continue reading
