Shedding light on early Parkinson ‘s disease pathology

Apr. 1, 2013 In a mouse model of early Parkinson's disease (PD), animals displayed movement deficits, loss of tyrosine-hydroxylase (TH)-positive fibers in the striatum, and astro-gliosis and micro-gliosis in the substantia nigra (SN), without the loss of nigral dopaminergic neurons. These findings, which may cast light on the molecular processes involved in the initial stages of PD, are available in the current issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience. "The most intriguing finding of our study was the lack of a significant decrease of TH levels in the SN of the low-dose MPTP-treated mice, suggesting that this treatment does not induce a direct loss of nigral dopaminergic neurons," says Joost Verhaagen PhD, lead investigator of the study. "These findings appear to support the 'dying back' hypothesis of PD, which proposes that the TH-positive terminal loss in the striatum is the first neurodegenerative event in PD, which later induces neuronal degeneration in the SN." Dr. Verhaagen is Head of the Workgroup on Neuroregeneration at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and Professor at the Free University in Amsterdam. Specifically, the research team found that introducing genetic material produced by MSCs, significantly reduced a particularly resistant form of malignant brain tumor in living lab rats. Brain injury rehab centre closes

1 April 2013 Last updated at 06:43 ET A specialist rehabilitation centre in Bath for people with brain injuries has been closed. The unit, at Bath's Royal National Hospital, shut on Sunday following a drop in demand for services. Councillors are now urging the government to reverse the decision and have written to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. The hospital trust said the NHS would continue to treat the patients who need care elsewhere in the country. Peter Miles, elected public governor for the hospital, criticised the closure and said it may not be too late for the government to step in. Mr Miles said: "The local council was not informed of this decision until some time in January. "They have a statutory right to be informed early on so they can consult, so they're quite upset about this and they've referred it to the Secretary of State." The letter has been written by Bath and North East Somerset Council's wellbeing policy development and scrutiny panel. Dr. Rowan T. Chlebowski of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, the lead researcher, and colleagues looked at postmenopausal women with no prior hysterectomy with negative mammograms within two years. The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found breast cancer incidence was higher in women prescribed estrogen and progestin combined therapy than those where not. Women who started hormone therapy closer to menopause had a higher breast cancer risk with a weakening influence as the time from menopause increased, the study said. "Because survival after breast cancer diagnosis did not differ between estrogen plus progestin users and non-users, the higher breast cancer incidence of those using estrogen plus progestin may lead to increased breast cancer mortality on a population basis," the authors wrote in the study. FRIDAY, March 29 (HealthDay News) -- It might be possible to create artificial ovaries in the laboratory to provide a more natural form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women, researchers report. As well as producing eggs, ovaries secrete hormones that are important for bone and heart health. Production of these hormones stops due to menopause, as well as surgical removal of the ovaries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments for certain types of cancer. There are hormone replacement medications, but long-term use of the drugs is generally avoided due to the increased risk of heart disease and breast cancer, according to the authors of a new study published in the March issue of the journal Biomaterials. In this study, a team from the Institute of Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center reported that ovaries created in the lab showed sustained release of the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone.
