BIND Biosciences Selected for Oral Presentation of BIND-014 Clinical Data at AACR 2013 Annual Meeting

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2013

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BIND Biosciences, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing a new class of highly selective targeted and programmable therapeutics called AccurinsTM, today announced that an oral presentation on its lead drug candidate, BIND-014, has been selected to be presented at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) 2013 Annual Meeting taking place April 6-10, 2013 in Washington, DC. The presentation will describe the results of a phase 1 study of BIND-014 in patients with advanced or metastatic solid tumors. BIND-014 is the first targeted and programmable nanomedicine to enter human clinical studies. In preclinical studies, BIND-014 has demonstrated both targeting and an improved pharmacologic profile resulting in high tumor drug concentrations and tumor growth inhibition for an extended period of time compared to the equivalent conventionally formulated docetaxel. Details on the oral presentation of BIND-014 at AACR: About Accurins BIND Biosciences is discovering and developing Accurins, proprietary new best-in-class therapeutics which have demonstrated superior target selectivity and programmable properties in preclinical studies, offering the potential to improve patient outcomes. Leveraging its proprietary Medicinal Nanoengineering platform, BIND develops Accurins that are designed to outperform conventional drugs by selectively accumulating in diseased tissues and cells. The objective is to provide higher … Continue reading

Vail Daily health column: New hope for old joints

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2013

Stem cell therapy is a minimally-invasive procedure that offers people suffering from joint pain the opportunity to use their bodies' own cells to repair and replace damaged joint tissue. An alternative to joint replacement surgery, stem cell therapy can be used on any joint. Tendonitis or injuries to the Achilles tendon are also good responders to the treatment. Dubbed the 21st Century penicillin, stem cell therapy now offers hope and unprecedented opportunities for healing. Medicine is entering a new era. While in the news for years, stem cell discussions focused on the use of human embryos, producing much debate. Now, however, most scientists and physicians use adult stem cell harvesting and re-implantation, extracting adult stem cells from a person's own body not from human embryos and fetuses. Unfortunately the United States had a ban on stem cell research and, therefore, American medicine was to some extent 10 to 15 years behind its European counterparts. In 2009, however, the United States created a minimally manipulated threshold, giving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authority over the regenerative application of stem cell therapy. The new rules have allowed the restorative field to catch up with similar practices in Europe. Despite the inaccessibility … Continue reading

House advances bill requiring KU Medical Center to establish stem cell research center

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2013

Topeka A bill supported by abortion opponents that would require the Kansas University Medical Center to start a center on adult stem cell research was advanced by the House on Tuesday. State Rep. David Crum, R-Augusta, described the bill as "pro-life," in that adult stem cell research has the "potential to establish cures that improve the quality of life and extend life." But opponents of Senate Bill 199 said legislators shouldn't mandate KU start a center without any state funding while many of those same legislators also voted to cut funding to the school in the state appropriations bill. And the opponents said KU did not ask for the bill and that traditionally the startup of a research and treatment center requires a lengthy planning process that brings together school leaders, researchers and the business community before approaching the Legislature. "We are in uncharted territory," state Rep. Barbara Bollier, R-Mission Hills, said. "Stem cell research and therapy is incredibly complex," Bollier said. "The doctors and researchers who are involved know what they are doing and they don't need us to set up a specific stem cell treatment center." Bollier tried to add an amendment to the bill that she said … Continue reading
