Brain injury walk raises money for concussion treatment

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2013

The Brain Injury Association of California is sponsoring the Walk for Brain Injury this Sunday on the west steps of the Capitol. With more than 300,000 sports-related concussions per year, the sixth annual Brain Injury Association of California Walk for Brain Injury is raising money for MindGame, an organization that supports the treatment of concussions. MindGame is a nonprofit organization that is composed of health care providers from Kaiser, Mercy, Sutter and UC Davis which aims to improve management of sports-related concussions. Profits from the walk will go to support the assessment and treatment services that MindGame offers to student athletes who have sustained concussions. The Brain Injury Association of California reports that 10 percent of contact sport athletes will sustain a concussion each season, and 85 percent of concussions are not diagnosed. The association also says that after one concussion, the risk of another concussion is four to six times more likely. Three or more concussions over time can produce permanent brain damage. In 2012, over 800 people participated in the Walk for Brain Injury with over $60,000 raised. This year, NFL players, survivors of concussions and legislators will all take part in the fundraiser that is slated to … Continue reading

Interest fading in New Brunswick funding for controversial MS treatment

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2013

FREDERICTON - Two years after New Brunswick decided to help multiple sclerosis patients pay for an unproven treatment that's only offered outside the country, the number of patients who have sought the so-called liberation treatment has fallen short of expectations. A leading authority on MS says he's not surprised the numbers are falling off. The Finance Department says since April 1, 2011, 82 people who wanted the treatment that widens constricted veins in the neck have been approved for payments of $2,500 each. Applicants get the government funding if a community group raises matching funds. The provincial government budgeted $400,000 for the program in its first two years of operation or enough to help 160 people seek the treatment. The government approved 25 applications in the first four months the money was available, but interest has tapered off and there have been no applications in the last two months. "It's getting fewer and fewer because every month a negative study is coming out," said Dr. Jock Murray, a neurologist at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Italian vascular specialist Paolo Zamboni reported dramatic improvements in his patients after he pioneered the procedure, but Murray said none of the subsequent studies done around … Continue reading

Teen Organizes Charity Ball Fundraiser to Fight Disease

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2013

It's a rare disorder that affects her balance. It starts in the fingers and toes and eventually makes it's way to the heart, shortening life span. Anna organized a charity masquerade ball to create awareness and raise money to find a cure. That's when businesses got in on the cause. The Woodridge Golf Course donated a banquet room. Pepsi donated drinks and DaVinci's catered the event free of charge. The 300 tickets they had sold out in 10 days. And perhaps the biggest show of support came from her classmates. Anna can't wear heels so all the girls had fancy flats. For her it's about helping the others suffering from the disease. "I wanted to raise money because it's not just me. There's little kids out there suffering from this. There's no treatment or cure, so it's almost like you're stuck," says Anna. But Anna is making a difference. Between ticket sales and donations Anna raised more than $22,000 to fund research for a cure. Read the rest here: Teen Organizes Charity Ball Fundraiser to Fight Disease … Continue reading
