Most men with erectile dysfunction remain untreated, say US scientists

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

Public release date: 19-Mar-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Ivanka Moerkerken i.moerkerken@uroweb.org 31-026-389-0680 European Association of Urology Milan, 19 March 2013 - Despite the high erectile dysfunction (ED) prevalence most patients receive no treatment, according to a new US study, presented at the 28th Annual EAU Congress. Undertreatment of ED continues to be common, even though the treatments have a proven efficacy and quality of life impact. "Until now, research conducted on the treatment of erectile dysfunction has been derived from surveys involving small populations," wrote the authors. "However, a comprehensive and larger patient-based study using claims data that characterises men undergoing treatment for ED remains to be performed. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of use of medical therapies, associated co-morbidites of ED in a large population of men." During a 12-month period ending June 2011, patients were identified and included in a payor data-set if they received a diagnosis code for ED. Patients were considered "treated" if they filled a prescription for a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5i), injection or urethral prostaglandins or androgen replacement (ART). "Untreated" patients received the diagnosis but did not fill a prescription. The therapies prescribed were monitored … Continue reading

Retirement Crisis: Poor Boomers on the Horizon

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) has published its annual Retirement Confidence Survey which confirms what virtually all such surveys have concluded: 1) that Americans are living longer; and 2) that they do not have anywhere near enough saved for retirement. The sad truth is, Americans do almost no thinking about what kind of retirement they want. They mistakenly assume that Social Security is a retirement program, when in fact it is a supplemental retirement program. The three "stools" of retirement-Social Security, a pension, and private savings-have all seen some shrinkage in the past few years. For Social Security, all baby boomers know the truth: We are going to be working longer, into our 70s, paying more and getting less. Pensions are going away: International Business Machines (IBM) stopped providing pensions to new employees a couple years ago, and many are facing reductions in their benefits. (Read More: Cities That Are Most Prepared for Retirement ) And private savings? Let me quote from the EBRI survey: 57 report having less than $25,000 in household savings and investments (excluding their home and pension benefits). This is for all workers, so older workers would have more money, but other surveys show the … Continue reading

Prescription needed to remedy generic drug pricing shenanigans

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

Wanda Ferrin fills her husband's prescription for the generic antibiotic doxycycline at a Target in Simi Valley. For years, the medication has cost her $6 a month. In February, however, the price tripled to $18 for 30 pills. And this month, it skyrocketed to $133. This is noteworthy enough. But what happened next makes the entire business of drug pricing a study in lunacy. "A pharmacy clerk at Target suggested running the prescription through the company's discount program," Ferrin, 61, recalled. "After a minute at the computer, the clerk I'd been dealing with came back and said my price was now $8." That's right: A $6 drug turns into an $18 drug and then a $133 drug. But with a little retail hocus-pocus, it can be changed to an $8 drug. Talk about a trip through the looking glass. I heard a number of stories similar to Ferrin's after writing recently about a CVS customer who saw her bill for generic doxycycline jump from $4.30 to $165. One reader told me about a doubling of the price of the generic gout medicine colchicine. Another cited prices for the generic version of the blood-clot blocker Plavix that ran from $21 to … Continue reading

Docs' licenses under fire after deaths

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

BURLINGTON, Ind. (WLFI) - Four doctors from one family practice are being linked to nearly a dozen patient deaths, some of which date back to 2008. The investigation began in February when the Drug Enforcement Agency raided the Burlington location on a search warrant. The doors to the clinic remain open as of Tuesday, but the attorney general now wants four of the physicians' licenses suspended. A sign that reads Now Accepting New Patients sits outside the Wagoner Medical Center on East Seventh Street in Burlington, despite four physicians being accused of using dangerous prescribing practices and unsafe drug mixes. "I don't know everything that is going on here but I can say that I am happy here and I hope I can still come here because they are my medical family," said one Wagoner Medical Center patient. On Monday, the Indiana Attorney General's office filed an emergency license suspension against four of the center's physicians. Named in the 10-page petition is Dr. Don Wagoner, his wife, Dr. Marilyn Wagoner, Dr. Robert Brewer and Dr. William Terpstra. WLFI-News 18 stopped at both offices Tuesday morning one in Burlington, the other in Kokomo. We were declined a comment and asked to … Continue reading

Delray Recovery Center Offers New Dual-Diagnosis Treatment for Addiction

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

Delray Recovery Center is a Florida treatment facility that offers individualized programs for treatment of addictions to alcohol and drugs, eating disorders and other mental health issues. Recognizing that people may suffer from a combination of mental health issues and alcohol or drug dependency, Delray Recovery Center is now offering a new dual-diagnosis treatment for addiction. Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) March 18, 2013 Delray Recovery Center has an experienced and compassionate staff of professional addiction specialists and psychologists that can provide assessments and work together to develop and implement an individualized treatment plan tailored to meet the persons specific needs. Many recovery centers offer treatment plans that focus on addiction recovery, but not every center can also address a persons mental health issues that may be part of the problem, said Delray Recovery Center Chief Operations Officer Doug Petri. At Delray Recovery Center, we can now do both with our dual-diagnosis treatment plan. While it is often unclear if a mental health issue leads to substance abuse or the substance abuse leads to mental health issue, the plan of action Delray Recovery Center offers for co-occurring disorders is very clear. The first step is a proper diagnosis of the mental … Continue reading
