'Road trip' pair admit drugs haul

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

18 March 2013 Last updated at 10:00 ET A man said he thought he was only on a "wee road trip" after being caught in a friend's car with drugs worth 500,000. Steven Gibb, 20, from Falkirk, and John Gorrian, 49, from West Lothian, had cannabis and amphetamine in May 2013. Gibb denied to police he had been drug trafficking and said he joined Gorrian on a trip in case he got "bored". However, the pair admitted being concerned in the supply of the Class B drugs when they appeared at the High Court in Glasgow. Judge Lord Kinclaven remanded the pair in custody and deferred sentencing for reports. The pair had picked up the consignment next to the ground of English League One side Coventry City before being arrested on their return to Scotland. The court heard how Gorrian picked up a hired car in Bathgate, West Lothian on 4 May 2012 and headed south with his friend Gibb. Police tailed the vehicle to a car park at Coventry's Ricoh Arena stadium. Gorrian initially collected a package stuffed with amphetamine from a nearby car before four boxes of cannabis were also picked up. The rest is here: 'Road trip' … Continue reading

N.J. compounding pharmacy recalls drugs nationwide over contamination concerns

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

WASHINGTONThe Food and Drug Administration is warning doctors and hospital managers about a countrywide recall of all drugs made by a New Jersey compounding pharmacy because they may be contaminated with mold. The recalled products from Med Prep Consulting Inc. include dozens of drugs packaged in infusion bags, plastic syringes and glass vials distributed to regional hospitals in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Delaware. More than 70 products are included in the nationwide recall, and they can be found on the FDA's website. The firm's products include antibiotics, general and local anesthetics, cardiac medication, painkillers and drugs for labor and delivery. The Tinton Falls, N.J.-based company said Saturday that mold was found in five bags of magnesium sulfate products dispensed to a Connecticut hospital. The FDA later identified the particles as fungal. Magnesium sulfate is used to control seizures and premature labor in pregnant women. No infections have been reported to date, but the FDA says it is working with officials in New Jersey and Connecticut to determine the scope of contamination. All facilities that have received products from this company have been notified, the FDA said. The N.J. firm has agreed to temporarily halt all productions. "We do not … Continue reading

Obstacles in Burma's War on Drugs

Damir Sagolj / REUTERS A Burmese soldier secures the area after destroying poppy fields in the mountains of Shan state on Jan. 26, 2012 Southeast Asias Golden Triangle is a crumpled baize of lofty peaks and lush valleys straddling the triptych borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma. The region is notorious for drugs, particularly Burmas poppy fields that are the worlds second principal source of heroin. But with recent democratic reforms heralding a prodigal return to the international fold, Burma is now feeling increased pressure to tackle its drugs problem. To this end, Myanmar, as the country is officially known, last week sent a high-level delegation to the U.N. Commission on Narcotics Drugs in Vienna for the first time. However, uneasy cease-fires with ethnic rebels, porous frontiers and rampant corruption continue to cloud whether the central government can successfully rein in its wild hinterland. (MORE:Burmas Kachin War: Renewed Ethnic Strife Threatens Regional Stability) Although Golden Triangle heroin production remains a long way shy of its zenith in the 1990s, when there were around 165,000 hectares of poppy fields and 80% of New York Citys street heroin originated from Southeast Asia, there has nevertheless been a substantial resurgence. Thailand has all … Continue reading

FDA warns of mold in recalled specialty drugs

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration warned doctors and hospital managers Monday about a nationwide recall of all drugs made by a New Jersey compounding pharmacy because of possible mold contamination. The recalled products from Med Prep Consulting Inc. include dozens of antibiotics, pain relievers and drugs used in surgery and labor. The drugs were packaged in infusion bags, plastic syringes and glass vials and distributed to regional hospitals in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Delaware. Tinton Falls, N.J.-based Med Prep said Saturday that mold was found in five bags of magnesium sulfate dispensed to a Connecticut hospital. Magnesium sulfate is used to control seizures and premature labor in pregnant women. Med Prep is a compounding pharmacy, which means it mixes custom formulations of drugs to meet doctors' specifications. The recall marks the second time in less than a year that a compounding pharmacy has recalled all of its products because of contamination. A tainted steroid distributed last year by a Massachusetts-based compounding pharmacy killed 50 people and has sickened more than 720 nationwide. Many of the cases involved a rare form of meningitis tied to fungus found in the New England Compounding Center's facilities. The company has … Continue reading

By Dan Dockstader on Mar 19, 2013 in News The Wyoming Game and Fish Department seeks input on motorized watercraft regulations for the Snake River between Grand Teton National Park and the West Table boat ramp in the Snake River Canyon. Currently, no motorized watercraft are allowed in Grand Teton National Park or in the Snake River Canyon below West Table. Game and Fish managers have received numerous requests for motorized use restrictions on the Snake River. Prior to making any regulatory changes, Game and Fish managers would like to hear from those interested in Snake River boating regarding motorized watercraft use. Safety concerns have been heard over the last several years regarding operation of motorized watercraft, particularly in narrow river channels. Game and Fish will hold a public meeting to discuss the topic at 6 p.m., Monday, March 25 at the Jackson Game and Fish office. If public support appears to favor a watercraft regulation proposal, it will then be brought forward at a second public meeting (the week of May 6) at which time watercraft and fishing regulations in the Jackson region will be discussed. The official comment period for watercraft and fishing regulations is April 23 through … Continue reading
