Mayo Clinic to hold trial for BrainStorm's ALS stem cell therapy

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2013

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics said the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has agreed to conduct a clinical trial of the company's adult stem cell treatment for ALS. The Mayo Clinic is the third leading U.S. clinical site to sign a letter of understanding, following the University of Massachusetts and Massachusetts General, BrainStorm said on Monday. Israel-based BrainStorm is developing NurOwn for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Initial results from Phase I studies suggest that patients with ALS experience a positive clinical outcome after treatment with NurOwn cells, the company said. Anthony Windebank, principal investigator at the Mayo Clinic, said the clinic started patient stem cell safety trials last year. "The next logical ... step is the type of modification that enables BrainStorm's NurOwn cells to deliver factors to the nervous system that are known to promote motor nerve cell survival," Windebank said. BrainStorm plans to enroll patients into clinical trials at the Mayo Clinic, the University of Massachusetts and Massachusetts General as early as the second half of 2013. "This is another step forward in finding … Continue reading

Cancer Group Discusses Link Between Prostate Cancer And Erectile Dysfunction

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2013

March 17, 2013 redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports Your Universe Online Men suffering from prostate cancer are four times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction (ED) than those without the condition a phenomenon caused largely by the treatment process, according to the UK-based Macmillan Cancer Support charity. According to the Belfast Telegraph, the organization said there are currently about 160,000 men being treated for prostate cancer in the UK who are suffering from ED. As they went through surgery, radiotherapy and hormone treatments, it became difficult or even impossible for those men to maintain erections. In some there may be permanent nerve damage, meaning they cannot maintain an erection. In others the physical problem can be temporary while for some the treatment has led to a psychological barrier to sex, BBC News added. Macmillan Cancer Support officials said two out of every three prostate cancer patients report an inability to get an erection as a result of their therapy. These figures highlight a major issue facing prostate cancer patients after treatment, explained Professor Jane Maher, chief medical officer of the UK cancer charity. The sheer volume of men affected shows the need for careful discussions before treatment. Many can be … Continue reading

Stem cells transplantation technique has high potential as a novel therapeutic strategy for erectile dysfunction

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2013

Mar. 15, 2013 Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells cultivated on the surface of nanofibrous meshes could be a novel therapeutic strategy against post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction (ED), conclude the authors of a study which is to be presented at the 28th Annual EAU Congress later this week. The study was conducted by a group of Korean scientists and will be awarded 3rd prize for best abstract in non-oncology research on the opening day of the congress. During their investigation, the group aimed to examine the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells cultivated on the surface of nanofibrous meshes (nano-hMSCs) into neuron-like cells and repair of erectile dysfunction using their transplantation around the injured cavernous nerve (CN) of rats. "The objectives of the study reflect a very pertinent need in today's urology practice," said the lead author of the investigation Prof. Y.S. Song of Soonchunhyang University School of Medicine in South Korea. "Post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction results from injury to the cavernous nerve that provides the autonomic input to erectile tissue. It is a common complication after radical prostatectomy which decreases the patient's quality of life." "Although advances in equipment and surgical techniques reduce this complication, patients still experience erectile dysfunction after radical … Continue reading

A wave of drug abuse has rocked Wall Street hard and its pushing record numbers of strung-out bankers, traders and other hotshot financial workers to seek treatment, a Post investigation reveals. The Streets raging drug-dependency explosion may be out of control, medical experts say, as the once-Masters of the Universe struggle with reduced pay and staff. Where once cocaine was the drug of choice for money managers, financial-service employees are now behind the surge in opioid painkiller use such as: Vicodin-, Oxycontin- and Percocet-linked visits to New York City emergency departments, a recent city health report says. As a result of that report, Mayor Bloomberg announced new emergency-room guidelines to prevent opioid prescription painkiller abuse. Prescription painkillers can provide life-changing relief for people in dire health situations, but they can be extremely dangerous if used or prescribed improperly, the mayor said. The most recent data show that visits to New York City emergency rooms for opioid painkiller-linked conditions has risen to 143 patients out of every 100,000 almost tripling in the last six years. In a groundbreaking study, University of Pennsylvania professor, Alexandra Michel, takes a chilling look at the dark side of life for a modern financier: Six out … Continue reading

Heroin, prescription drugs often to blame for overdose fatalities in county, state

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2013

From heroin addiction to painkiller dependency, deaths from illegal drug use is an issue in McHenry County. As investigators probe whether drugs were involved in the recent death of a 17-year-old Crystal Lake South High School student, the tragedy has put the spotlight on a growing problem that has local authorities and other officials rethinking policies and strategies. There were 122 drug overdose deaths in the county from 2009 to 2012, according to the McHenry County Coroners Office. Of those, 52 involved heroin, a drug that can cause a surge of euphoria and clouded thinking followed by alternately wakeful and drowsy states, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Drug overdose deaths in McHenry County during the past four years peaked in 2009, when there were 38 total, 15 of which involved heroin. Last year, 16 of the 31 overdose deaths involved heroin. Nationally, drug overdose deaths increased for the 11th consecutive year in 2010, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 38,329 deaths in 2010, up from 37,004 in 2009. The majority of those deaths involved addictive painkillers such as oxycodone and hydrocodone.
