Car slams into pharmacy , three taken to hospital

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Mac's Pharmacy on Washington Pike reopened Friday after an SUV slammed into the front Thursday. Three people were taken to hospitals: an employee, a customer inside, and the driver's wife. 79 year-old Dewey Kidwell told police he was picking up his wife across the street, then his accelerator got stuck when he slammed through the door. The vehicle eventually came to a rest at the pharmacy's counter. Rhonda Curtis, Grady Amann and the driver's wife Ann Kidwell were hurt but police say the injuries were minor. "It's out of the ordinary, it's out of the ordinary," said Mark Homer. Homer was walking down Washington Pike to pick up a prescription. But when he saw the boards going up at Mac's Pharmacy, he realized he'll have to wait to get it. "Well at my age, anything is believable, things happen. People aren't paying attention, the accelerator can get stuck," said Homer. "Thankfully no one was seriously injured. So we're just working now on cleaning up, and doing everything we can to get the pharmacy up and running," said one of the pharmacy's managers Mike Wilhoit. "We've called partners and electricians, our clean-up crews and insurance." We have … Continue reading

Mac's Pharmacy reopens after Thursday crash

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013

Mac Wilhoit never intended to remodel his pharmacy after he did so seven years ago. Then a sport utility vehicle crashed through his front door on Thursday, and his plans changed. Three people were injured in the crash when a Ford Explorer ran almost all the way through the Macs Pharmacy building at 2419 Washington Pike in North Knoxville around 1:30 p.m., right up to the pharmacy counter, police said. After Wilhoit and his staff, family and friends worked throughout the night, the pharmacy reopened Friday morning. Wilhoit said while the front of the store looks ugly, its minimal compared to the damage inside. We have tens of thousands of dollars in computer damage, he said. I never intended to do another remodel, but I have no choice. Were going to get prepared for the pharmacy of the future. Injured in the wreck were customer Grady Amann, 72; employee Rhonda Curtis, 47; and Ann Kidwell, age unavailable, who was riding in the SUV with her husband, Dewey Kidwell, 80, of Corryton. Dewey Kidwell reported the accelerator on his SUV stuck just after he had picked up his wife from a business across the street, officials said. Police have filed no … Continue reading

Patient’s Fat May Help Treat Brain Tumors

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013

Stem cells taken from a patients own body fat may one day be used to treat a deadly brain cancer, based on some promising but still preliminary research. The brain tumor known as glioblastoma occurs mostly in men, and most patients dont live much more than a year after being diagnosed. Most of the cancer can be removed by surgery, but unfortunately we just cant cure the cancer, and we have to rely on other techniques to be able to do it, says Johns Hopkins University neurosurgeon Alfredo Quiones-Hinojosa. He and his colleagues are trying to improve a treatment aimed at the cancer cells left behind after most of the tumor is cut away in surgery. In recent years, doctors have focused on a kind of adult stem cell called mesenchymal stem cells, which are drawn to these cancer cells. They can track those cells that are migrating in the human brain, and they can actually deliver a treatment. We can use them as Trojan horses, Quiones said. The mesenchymal stem cells now used on patients come from donor bone marrow. Quiones new idea is to get them from the patients own fat tissue, a procedure which is cheaper and … Continue reading

Stem cells transplantation technique has high potential as a novel therapeutic strategy for ED

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013

Public release date: 15-Mar-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Ivanka Moerkerken i.moerkerken@uroweb.org 31-026-389-0680 European Association of Urology Arnhem, 11 March 2013 - Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells cultivated on the surface of nanofibrous meshes could be a novel therapeutic strategy against post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction (ED), conclude the authors of a study which is to be presented at the 28th Annual EAU Congress later this week. The study was conducted by a group of Korean scientists and will be awarded 3rd prize for best abstract in non-oncology research on the opening day of the congress. During their investigation, the group aimed to examine the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells cultivated on the surface of nanofibrous meshes (nano-hMSCs) into neuron-like cells and repair of erectile dysfunction using their transplantation around the injured cavernous nerve (CN) of rats. "The objectives of the study reflect a very pertinent need in today's urology practice," said the lead author of the investigation Prof. Y.S. Song of Soonchunhyang University School of Medicine in South Korea. "Post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction results from injury to the cavernous nerve that provides the autonomic input to erectile tissue. It is a common complication after radical prostatectomy which decreases the … Continue reading

Rapid hearing loss may be a symptom of rare Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013

Mar. 14, 2013 Rapid hearing loss in both ears may be a symptom of the rare but always-fatal Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and should be considered a reason for clinicians to test for the disorder. That was the conclusion of Henry Ford Hospital researchers after encountering a 67-year-old patient who had been progressively losing hearing in both ears for two months and was eventually diagnosed with the disease. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or CJD, is often confused with so-called "mad cow disease," and though they are in the same family of disorders, are not the same. However, both are always fatal and share such symptoms as impaired thinking, jerky body movements, memory loss and dementia. Once infected with CJD, the brain develops holes, resulting in tissue which resembles a sponge. The report will be presented March 19 during the annual scientific meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in San Diego. According to Ahmad Riad Ramadan, M.D., a Henry Ford neurologist and lead author,,when the patient sought treatment he had no significant medical history and was complaining only of a continuing, rapid loss of hearing in both ears, and tinnitus -- a "ringing in the ears" -- that is a common side effect of … Continue reading
