OSU pharmacy college faces serious issues

Posted: Published on March 11th, 2013

By Ben Sutherly The Columbus Dispatch Sunday March 10, 2013 6:52 AM Research fraud, faculty infighting and federal lawsuits have plagued Ohio State Universitys pharmacy college in recent years. One prominent researcher, who is retiring after disputes with the colleges leadership, even called the working environment there dishonorable. Our college is just so messed up, said the pharmacy professor, Jessie Lai-Sim Au. Since 2007, two pharmacy college professors have sued Ohio State in federal court, alleging retaliation and discrimination, and at least four professors and a graduate student have been accused of research misconduct or misuse of grant funds. This is a lot to be going on in a single college, said Scott Jaschik, editor of the website Inside Higher Ed and a former editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education. He noted that hes unfamiliar with the details of the pharmacy colleges cases. Research misconduct is very serious, and universities do not want to be known as places with multiple research misconduct cases period. In an interview with The Dispatch, the colleges dean, Robert Brueggemeier, said the university is placing a greater emphasis on research ethics, including a class on the topic that will be required of students and … Continue reading

Compounding pharmacy 'got greedy,' former employee says

Posted: Published on March 11th, 2013

Former employees of a Framingham compounding pharmacy at the center of a national meningitis outbreak are claiming the New England Compounding Center brazenly broke the rules. Darrel Clark is one of more than 700 people nationwide sickened after receiving a contaminated steroid injection manufactured by NECC. "I feel they're criminals. It's like they gave out poison knowing it was poison but didn't care because they were making money, he said. Forty-eight people have died, and Clarks family worried the 50-year-old father would be one of them. For the first time in the six months since the fungal meningitis outbreak, those who worked inside the compounding pharmacy are speaking out. Joe Connolly, a former technician, told 60 Minutes, The underlying factor is that the company got greedy and over extended. And we got sloppy and something happened. Connolly says mold was found in the clean room a dozen times during a span of three years. NECC was supposed to manufacture drugs for individual patients, but Connolly says a month before the first death he warned his supervisor, Something's going to happen, something's going to get missed and we're going to get shut down. We weren't compounding any more. We were manufacturing. … Continue reading

"Bioteeth" Grown From Gum Cells

Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Dentistry Also Included In: Stem Cell Research Article Date: 11 Mar 2013 - 3:00 PDT Current ratings for: Scientists Grow Teeth From Gum Cells However, it may be some years before what has been achieved in the lab is available to patients sitting in the dentist's chair. The researchers had to combine the human gum cells with a type of embryonic mouse cell to instruct the gum cells to make teeth. The next challenge is to find a human adult cell that can be coaxed to do the same. Paul Sharpe, a professor at King's College London, and colleagues, report their work in the 4 March online before print issue of the Journal of Dental Research. A bioengineered "living" tooth would preserve the health of the surrounding tissue much better than an artificial implant, as Sharpe, an expert in craniofacial development and stem cell biology, explained in 2004, when he and his colleagues received a grant of 0.5m (about $0.8m) to develop a way to use stem cells to make a new tooth: "Teeth are living, and they are able to respond to a person's bite. They move and in doing so they maintain … Continue reading

Advice call over epilepsy drug study

Posted: Published on March 11th, 2013

10 March 2013 Last updated at 14:14 ET Campaigners want the Welsh government to review the way the possible side effects of an anti-epilepsy drug are relayed to pregnant mothers. It comes after a recent study revealed a link between the drug and developmental problems in children. The Welsh government said it was not its remit and a UK government agency said it followed national guidelines. Meanwhile, Newport West MP Paul Flynn told The Wales Report on BBC Wales that the mothers' plight was "dreadful". Doctors have been aware of the risk associated with the anticonvulsant drug sodium valproate, known as Epilim, for decades. But a recent study by the University of Liverpool also revealed a link between the drug and other developmental problems in children. Joanne Cozens, from Caerphilly, is one of the 32,000 people in Wales with epilepsy. She started taking Epilim as a teenager and continued during her pregnancy. Mrs Cozens' 13-year-old son Tomas has Asperger's syndrome. She claims she was not warned of the danger to her unborn and says she would never have taken Epilim had she been told.
