Post- stroke walking program improves stroke survivors’ lives

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2013

Mar. 7, 2013 Regular, brisk walking after having a stroke could help boost your physical fitness, mobility and quality of life, according to research in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. "Walking is a great way to get active after a stroke," said Carron Gordon, Ph.D., lead author of the study and a lecturer in the physical therapy department at University of the West Indies in Jamaica. "It's familiar, inexpensive, and it's something people could very easily get into." Researchers divided 128 adult stroke survivors into a group that performed brisk outdoor walking three times a week for three months and a group that had therapeutic massage and no supervised exercise. Compared to the massage group, the walking group: After a stroke, many people lack energy and are afraid of falling while walking -- withdrawing from meaningful activities like going to church, buying groceries and visiting friends and family, Gordon said. Previous research has shown that improving physical activity without putting too much stress on your body can help achieve a higher quality of life after a stroke. But those studies evaluated treadmill walking and cycling. The new study shows you can walk without exercise equipment at any convenient place … Continue reading

Mind-controlled exoskeleton to help disabled people walk again

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2013

Mar. 7, 2013 Every year thousands of people in Europe are paralysed by a spinal cord injury. Many are young adults, facing the rest of their lives confined to a wheelchair. Although no medical cure currently exists, in the future they could be able to walk again thanks to a mind-controlled robotic exoskeleton being developed by EU-funded researchers. The system, based on innovative 'Brain-neural-computer interface' (BNCI) technology -- combined with a light-weight exoskeleton attached to users' legs and a virtual reality environment for training -- could also find applications in the rehabilitation of stroke victims and in assisting astronauts rebuild muscle mass after prolonged periods in space. In the United Kingdom, every eight hours someone suffers a spinal cord injury, often leading to partial or full lower-body paralysis. In the United States, more than 250 000 people are living with paralysis as a result of damage to their spinal cord, usually because of a traffic accident, fall or sporting injury. Many are under the age of 50, and with no known medical cure or way of repairing damaged spinal nerves they face the rest of their lives in a wheelchair. But by bypassing the spinal cord entirely and routing brain … Continue reading

Home national 1 in every 100 Thais prone to Parkinson's disease The Nation March 9, 2013 1:00 am However, Chulalongkorn Hospital's Dr Rungroj Phitthayasiri did not say if this 1:100 ratio was higher or lower than previous figures, though he did say that Parkinson's was afflicting more people between the ages of 21 and 40. He explained that the initial symptoms were usually muscle cramps, and young people often mistook them as general muscular spasms or bone-related illness and sought treatment with orthopaedists. However, he said, if the symptoms were correctly diagnosed at an early stage, it can extend patients' life by 30 years and reduce the risk of injuries incurred from a fall or a collapse, which sufferers are prone to. Factors leading to Parkinson's include constant exposure to insecticide, injuries or hard impact to the head, though exercise is deemed as one of the many preventative measures. Dr Phawut Mekwichai, from the Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima hospital, said 74 per cent of 300 Parkinson's patients treated in a six-month study showed symptoms that manifested at night, which put them at the risk of suffocation, cardiac arrest and subsequent death. He suggested that such patients be turned over every two … Continue reading

Boxing, Parkinson ’s disease

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2013

Medical Files By Rafael Castillo M.D. Philippine Daily Inquirer The ordinary man on the street does not know much of Parkinsons disease or PD. An elderly patient who was recently diagnosed to have PD thought it was a disease related to boxing. Muhammad Ali has somehow become the face of PD. Known for his agility and nimbleness in his youth as a heavyweight boxing champion, he is now seen in news features and documentaries with full-blown features of PDresting hand tremors as if hes rolling a pill or marble with his fingers, stiffness of the limbs, decrease in facial expression, shuffling or small steps when walking. A related concern was raised for Manny Pacquiao after his knockout loss to Juan Marquez, hence the unsolicited advice that he hang up his gloves for good before its too late. Although PD and Parkinsonism are sometimes interchanged, theyre not exactly the same and some brain experts explain that its actually Parkinsonism that is linked more to boxing. Parkinsonism is actually the general condition and PD is just a type of it. Repetitive head trauma Permanent injury to the brain cells results from repetitive head trauma. The brain cells or neurons in an area … Continue reading

North Charleston, S.C. (PRWEB) March 09, 2013 Charleston personal injury lawyer Ken Harrell today offered Joye Law Firms support to the Brain Injury Association of Americas designation of March as Brain Injury Awareness Month, saying its Anytime, Anywhere, Anyone theme is on the mark. At Joye Law Firm, our lawyers recognize the devastation a brain injury can cause, because weve seen it in our work with catastrophic injury victims who have suffered TBI in car accidents, falls and other accidents, said Harrell, managing partner of the personal injury law firm with offices in North Charleston and Myrtle Beach. We appreciate the Brain Injury Association of Americas efforts to increase awareness about the prevalence of TBI and the fact that an accident that causes a traumatic brain injury can happen to anyone at any time, he said. The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is the countrys oldest and largest nationwide brain injury advocacy organization. Its Palmetto State affiliate, the BIA of South Carolina, is located in Columbia. The BIAAs primary message for Brain Injury Awareness Month 2013 is that a brain injury can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone -- a brain injury does not discriminate. Brain Scans May Explain Thinking, Memory Problems in Some MS Patients

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2013

By Denise Mann HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, March 6 (HealthDay News) -- Besides problems with gait and vision, people who have multiple sclerosis often complain they have trouble remembering things, and now new research may explain why. According to a small study from the Netherlands, people with MS who report memory and thinking problems have more extensive damage to the white matter in their brains than their counterparts with MS who don't report such problems. Up to 70 percent of all people with MS will experience a mental decline at some point, said study author Hanneke Hulst at the VU University Medical Center, in Amsterdam. And the new research "confirmed that cognitive symptoms in MS have a biological basis," Hulst said. The findings were published online March 6 in Neurology. MS is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body attacks myelin, a fatty substance that insulates the nerve fibers of the central nervous system. The brain's white matter is surrounded by myelin. Symptoms range in severity and may include problems with gait, balance, vision, memory and thinking abilities. To get a better picture of what was going on in the brains of people with MS, Hulst and colleagues used a … Continue reading

Research focus on investigation of laminin-based approaches BioLamina, Stockholm, Sweden and Roche recently announced the signing of a research and development agreement to jointly develop new cell culture systems for various applications, including stem cell research. The collaboration will focus on assessing laminin-based in-vitro cell culture matrices offering highly physiological microenvironments for living cells. Under the terms of the agreement Roche will provide R&D funding and scientific expertise to BioLamina. Financial details were not disclosed. Laminins are proteins located in the extracellular matrix providing the stability essential for cell growth and behaviour. They are the only protein group in this environment that have a tissue-specific distribution, including expression of specific laminins during embryonic development. This makes them a very interesting target for new biologically relevant cell culturing techniques. Our aim is to develop laminin-based culture systems that provide biologically relevant, standardized environments, said Ruedi Stoffel, Head of Biochemical Reagents & Custom Biotech at Roche. We are looking forward to this collaboration to build on the revolutionary cell cultivation techniques developed by our colleagues at the Karolinska Institute and BioLamina.
