Posted: Published on March 6th, 2013

DALLAS, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Pate Rehabilitation, delivering evidence-based treatment and support programs for individuals recovering from acquired brain injuries (ABIs), today announced publication of a landmark article with evidence demonstratingpost-acuterehabilitation as the standard of care followingtraumatic brain injury (TBI): Hayden M.E., Plenger P., Bison K., Kowalske K., Masel B., Qualls D. Treatment Effect Versus Pretreatment Recovery in Persons Withtraumatic brain injury: A Study Regarding the Effectiveness of Postacute Rehabilitation. PM R. 2013. Since rehabilitation of traumaticbrain injurybegan decades ago, there has been conflict about whether rehabilitation is necessary because there is "natural recovery." In 1970, research concluded that after brain cells die, they are not replaced. This belief prompted lack of hope for recovery of functioning following brain injury. In the late 1990s, as imaging technology progressed, research definitively showed that some critical parts of the brain continually develop new neurons throughout the life span. Current research involves extensive mapping of neurons and their connections throughout the brain. This research now shows that the connections between neurons can also evolve. These connections are greatly influenced by the interaction between the person's activity and their environment. Current knowledge about the regeneration and the connectivity of brain cells gives us … Continue reading

Senate approves stem cell research proposal

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2013

Posted at: 03/05/2013 5:50 PM By: The Associated Press SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A measure to allow human embryonic stem cell research in New Mexico has passed the Senate. The proposal would permit couples with leftover embryos at in-vitro fertilization clinics to donate them for research rather than have a clinic discard them. Supporters, including several Republican lawmakers, say the research may help in finding cures for deadly diseases and repairing damaged tissues, including spinal cord injuries. Opponents object to using human embryos for research. Stem cells are the building blocks for other cells in the body. The legislation was approved by the Senate on a 23-16 vote on Tuesday and goes to the House for consideration. Similar stem cell research proposals passed the Senate but failed in the House several times when Democrat Bill Richardson was governor. (Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Seven Genetic Risk Factors Associated with Common Eye Disorder

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2013

> Newswise A professor from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is one of the lead authors of a study identifying seven new regions of the human genome that are associated with increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness among older adults. The AMD Gene Consortium, a network of international investigators representing 18 research groups, also confirmed the existence of 12 other regions called loci that had been identified in previous studies. The authors report their findings online in the journal Nature Genetics. Supported by the National Eye Institute (NEI), a part of the National Institutes of Health, the study represents the most comprehensive genome-wide analysis of genetic variations associated with AMD. This work represents a big step forward toward solving why some people get AMD, while others do not, said Sudha Iyengar, PhD, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and a member of the consortiums senior executive committee. This disease is not caused by a single change in the DNA, but represents many events that accumulate over the lifetime of a patient. Identification of these genes provides molecular windows into the AMD disease process. AMD affects the … Continue reading

TIMESMAN: “Soup No. 7”

By: Loreto Tinitigan Posted: March 5, 2013 1:00 am EIGHTY ONE-year-old Joecon (Joe Concepcion of national consumers group and National Movement for Free Elections) publicly admitted that he underwent stem cell therapy last year but stopped doing so in the second to fourth session to complete the procedure, because he thought the therapy worked on him already as he feels 20 years younger. He encourages others to do the same although it entails more than a million pesos for one to avail of the therapy. Joecon spent about P1.5 million, according to him. Financial problems could be the reason why he discontinued it. Im now 72 but still feel 50 and if ever I have that amount I would rather put it in the bank to have something for my family when Im gone. Yesterday, I heard on television that some unscrupulous businessmen are promoting soup number 7 allegedly made from stem cells manufactured from China. It is in the form of powder and when mixed to your food will make you more active and look younger. Dr. Juan Oliarte of the Department of Health (DH) warned the public not to believe the report. He said although he believes that … Continue reading
