NeuroDerm Announces Positive Results of a Phase I Study of ND0612 for the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2013

NESS ZIONA, Israel, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- NeuroDerm, Ltd. announced today the results of a Phase I safety and pharmacokinetic trial of ND0612, a novel drug formulation for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. ND0612 is a proprietary levodopa/carbidopa liquid formula administered continuously sub-cutaneously through a patch pump. It is designed to provide steady levodopa blood levels for the reduction of motor complications in Parkinson's disease. Results of this study support the continued development of ND0612 for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. In this double-blind, placebo controlled, dose-escalation trial in young, healthy volunteers, ND0612 was shown to be safe and tolerable in all of the tested doses. Furthermore, clinically meaningful levodopa concentrations were reached and, for the first time in man, steady state levodopa concentrations were maintained in a practical manner both day and night. The full results of this study will be presented at a future scientific meeting. "ND0612's success in its first phase I trial means that clinically significant steady state levodopa concentrations can, for the first time, be maintained, both day and night, through a conveniently administered drug. With ND0612, steady state levodopa levels, the elusive holy grail of Parkinson's levodopa therapy, should be available to all … Continue reading

Tyler suffered a stroke at birth and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy shortly thereafter, but the Monarch soccer star refused to let his disability slow him down. At 15, he debuted with the United States Men's Paralympic soccer team, and he hopes to travel to the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Brazil. What's your role on the Paralympic soccer team? There are a lot of older guys. Our captain is 34. I'm one of the youngest, so I've been brought on to the team so that when the older guys retire, the younger guys can come up. A lot of those guys have been on the team for a really long time together. My first time was really tough, because I wasn't used to the atmosphere. The young guys do get treated a little differently, but we just have to push back and hold our own. How often do you practice with the team? Harnessing the brain's power to heal itself focus of international research conference in Toronto March 4 – 6, 2013

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2013

TORONTO, March 4, 2013 /CNW/ - Scientists from all over the world are meeting this week at The Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto for a three-day conference focused on Brain Plasticity and Neurorehabilitation. The 23rd annual neuroscience conference, presented by Baycrest Health Sciences' Rotman Research Institute (RRI), will highlight provocative findings in two related fields - brain plasticity and neurorehabilitation - which are yielding new ways to help people affected by stroke, traumatic brain injury, dementia, Parkinson's disease and depression. Brain plasticity is a relatively recent concept which suggests that an injured brain and nervous system can heal itself under the right circumstances. Neurorehabilitation refers to therapies aimed at improving quality of life after cognitive or other damage to the brain using specific types of training and brain stimulation combined with behavioural therapy. The goal is to restore lost or damaged functions such as speech or comprehension, or to help people compensate by enhancing other skills. "We believe this is the next exciting frontier in medicine," says conference co-chair Dr. Deirdre Dawson, a senior scientist at Baycrest's RRI and an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto. "Our progress in treating … Continue reading

Think BIG goes beyond March to help brain injured

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2013

KAPAA March is Brain Injury Awareness Month and members of the Think BIG (Brain Injury Group) met with Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. Wednesday during its meeting at the Kapaa Neighborhood Center to make the announcement. The purpose of the Brain Injury Awareness campaign during the month of March is to promote public awareness of the extent, causes, consequences, treatment and prevention of brain injury, states a mayoral proclamation presented by Carvalho. We extend a warm aloha and mahalo to the Think BIG organization for its advocacy, education and research in helping to bring hope and healing to millions of individuals living with brain injury, their families and the professionals who serve them, Carvalho said. Citing facts from the Brain Injury Association of America, 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury each year, a contributing factor in a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States. These injuries are largely the result of motor vehicle crashes, falls, assaults, sporting-related injuries or occupational injuries. Additionally, traumatic brain injury is the signature injury of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and presents new challenges for members of the military and their families. An injury that happens in an instant can bring … Continue reading

Elan moves to deter takeover bid

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2013

DUBLIN (AP) Irish drug maker Elan Corp. announced Monday it will pay shareholders a recurring special dividend linked to the sales of the multiple sclerosis treatment Tysabri. Analysts said the offer, contingent on Elan's pending sale of its Tysabri rights to partner Biogen Idec Inc., was designed to deter shareholders from considering a takeover bid by Royal Pharma. Elan said it planned to pay shareholders 20 percent of its Tysabri royalties received from Biogen twice annually beginning in the fourth quarter this year. "This dividend structure gives shareholders the right to enjoy unlimited participation in the upside from the Tysabri sales increase which we anticipate for the future," Elan said in a statement. Elan and Biogen jointly developed Tysabri and have split earnings since the drug's troubled launch in the U.S. market in 2004. They soon withdrew Tysabri from sale after three MS sufferers using the drug contracted PML, a rare brain-inflammation disease that is often fatal. But since its return to sale in 2006 under restricted conditions Tysabri has gradually gained market traction because, despite its PML risks, it is considered most effective at reducing the frequency and severity of sudden immobilization or partial paralysis experienced by MS patients. … Continue reading
