Stroudsburg pharmacy closes, but not for long

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2013

Buy This Photo James Chikwanha of Stroud Compounding & Wellness Pharmacy, Inc. in Stroud Township in his pharmacy, which has acquired the client list from Kresge-Lebar pharmacy patients.Melissa Evanko/Pocono Record March 03, 2013 At first glance, the sight of the recently vacated shop on Main Street seems to make sense: Another mom-and-pop pharmacy put out of business, a victim to tough competition posed by chain pharmacies. But the truth is actually a bit brighter. The Kresge-Lebar Pharmacy, which has been around in one form or another for almost 170 years, actually didn't go out of business. It was bought by a privately owned pharmaceutical compounding company in Stroud Township, which will continue to serve the pharmacy's large client base. Though the Kresge-Lebar name, which is actually two separate names representing two totally separate families, will no longer be used, the same kind of small-town service, with an emphasis on customer care, will continue. "(The old store) was a nice place and we're going to keep alive what was best about it here," said Michael Chikwanha, who recently bought the Kresge-Lebar Pharmacy and who also owns the compounding company in Stroud Township, Stroud Compounding. Indeed, the Kresge-Lebar Pharmacy was nice. It … Continue reading

Weston resident inspired by brother-in-law Christopher Reeve

Posted: Published on March 2nd, 2013

Deborah Morosini of Weston has been appointed as medical director of the advisory board at Provia Labs Store-A-Tooth, a stem cell bank specializing in dental stem cell preservation. Dr. Morosini brings her personal family experience supporting and promoting stem cell research, along with her medical background to the new role. An MD pathologist, she also has a masters degree in social work, is a voice for cancer patients and a strong supporter of stem cell research. She was inspired by the philanthropic efforts of her sister Dana Reeve, a nonsmoker who died from lung cancer, and her brother-in-law Christopher Reeve, the late actor who played Superman, who had a passion for stem cell research for spinal cord injuries and other illnesses. After seeing their work, Morosini incorporated medical and philanthropic synergies in her career, spending the past decade as a biotech and pharmaceutical professional, and becoming an inspirational speaker to families dealing with medical hardships. As a scientist, I have seen that certain types of mesenchymal stem cells, such as those derived from bone marrow, already provide cures for diseases, and there is significant potential for cells extracted from dental pulp, said Morosini. As an individual, and through Chris and … Continue reading

Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy Funds UCLA Project to Identify Genetic Changes that Affect the Severity of Duchenne …

Posted: Published on March 2nd, 2013

HACKENSACK, N.J., March 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) will provide $100,000 to Dr. Stanley Nelson of the University of California, Los Angeles, to examine the genomes of 40 boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne) who are either very mildly affected or very severely affected. The goal is to identify changes in genes other than dystrophin that may affect the course of the disease. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20100119/DC39975LOGO) "We know that even boys who have exactly the same mutation in the dystrophin gene can have different disease courses," said Dr. Nelson. "It is very likely that other mutations or DNA variants in different genes may play a role in addition to dystrophin." Dr. Nelson will use a relatively new technique known as "exome sequencing" to look only at the parts of the genetic code that spell out the recipe for proteins, known individually as "exons." Because the exons of the genome make up less than 1% of the total genetic material, this method provides a far more practical way to look at the coding regions (genes) for the about 20,000 human proteins without having to sequence the participants' entire genome. For this project, Dr. Nelson will obtain blood samples primarily … Continue reading
