New genetic test may improve autism diagnosis

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2013

SALT LAKE CITY A new genetic test may lead to a more accurate diagnosis for individuals with autism spectrum disorder by looking at key genetic markers. Geneticists say that a more accurate diagnosis leads to better treatment and support because families know more about what theyre dealing with. The new test is a product of a Utah company called Lineagan. The test has already changed things for some Utah families. Brigitte Kracl said she questioned whether she had done something wrong to cause her sons developmental disorder. Days after a test at the Lineagan labs, she discovered her son Cameron was not actually autistic. Her son actually has a rare genetic disorder called angelman syndrome, which seems similar to autism. Despite these similarities, the treatment and medications can be very different. Kracl said dealing with the disorder requires patience and a focus on the positive. You have these milestones with an infant, and every one that we would miss, it kind of broke your heart, she said. Now we know were not going to hit this milestone, so dont focus on it. Dont worry about it. Focus on what he can do. Lineagan markets its test primarily to pediatricians who … Continue reading

Iraqi President Speaking After Stroke

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2013

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is able to speak and understand people around him as he recovers from a stroke he suffered in December, a doctor responsible for his medical care said Sunday. In an interview, Dr. Najmaldin Karim described the improvement in the president's health as encouraging. Karim is a neurosurgeon who is also governor of the Iraqi province of Kirkuk. He oversees Talabani's medical care when he is in Iraq, although the president is currently in Germany for treatment. "He's improving. He's talking. He's conversing. He understands when he's spoken to. It's a good development," Karim said. "We're very encouraged and excited by this." Karim said he is in daily contact with Talabani's German medical team. He is hopeful Talabani will be able to return to Iraq, but acknowledged that any decision rests with the doctors treating him in Europe. "We'll have to just take it one day at a time," he said. AP The 79-year-old Talabani was rushed to a hospital late on Dec. 17 after suffering a stroke. Few specific details have been released about his health, fueling intense speculation about the seriousness of his condition and his ability to continue with his job. He was flown … Continue reading

Scientists find genes linked to human neurological disorders in sea lamprey genome

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2013

Feb. 24, 2013 Scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) have identified several genes linked to human neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injury, in the sea lamprey, a vertebrate fish whose whole-genome sequence is reported this week in the journal Nature Genetics. "This means that we can use the sea lamprey as a powerful model to drive forward our molecular understanding of human neurodegenerative disease and neurological disorders," says Jennifer Morgan of the MBL's Eugene Bell Center for Regenerative Biology and Tissue Engineering. The ultimate goals are to determine what goes wrong with neurons after injury and during disease, and to determine how to correct these deficits in order to restore normal nervous system functions. Unlike humans, the lamprey has an extraordinary capacity to regenerate its nervous system. If a lamprey's spinal cord is severed, it can regenerate the damaged nerve cells and be swimming again in 10-12 weeks. Morgan and her collaborators at MBL, Ona Bloom and Joseph Buxbaum, have been studying the lamprey's recovery from spinal cord injury since 2009. The lamprey has large, identified neurons in its brain and spinal cord, making it an excellent model to study regeneration at the single … Continue reading

Cannabinoid Trans-Caryophyllene Protects Brain Cells From Ischemia

Editor's Choice Academic Journal Main Category: Stroke Article Date: 24 Feb 2013 - 0:00 PST Current ratings for: Cannabinoid Trans-Caryophyllene Protects Brain Cells From Ischemia 5 (1 votes) 5 (1 votes) TC is derived from the essential oils of the Cannabis sativa plant, but its structure is very different to other classical cannabinoids - it is not associated with any psychoactive side effects. Researchers conducted tests in both in vivo and in vitro animal models and found that TC is successfully able to protect brain cells from ischemia. Brain ischemia occurs when there is a lack of blood flow to the brain, this can sometimes lead to irreversible damage in the form of vascular dementia. It can be quite deadly, according to researchers from the University of California - Los Angeles, around 62% of ischemic stroke patients are re-hospitalized within 12 months and 15% die within a month of being hospitalized. In cell cultures consisting of oxygen deprived rat cortical neurons and glia, TC reduced neuronal injury and mitochondrial depolarization. The lead author of the study, Won-Ki Kim, PhD, of the Department of Neuroscience, College of Medicine, Korea University in Seoul, said: The study is the first of its kind … Continue reading

MS Dhoni 200 v Australia in Chennai

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2013

By Mike Dawes PUBLISHED: 07:56 EST, 24 February 2013 | UPDATED: 07:56 EST, 24 February 2013 A career-high 206 not out from Mahendra Singh Dhoni put India firmly in control of the first Test against Australia at the close of play on day three in Chennai. Dhoni smashed 22 fours and five sixes with his knock taking just 243 balls as India finished 515 for eight, 135 ahead of Australia's first-innings effort of 380 all out. Virat Kohli made 107 while Sachin Tendulkar could only add 10 to his overnight score of 71 on a day when Australia toiled in the field. Star of the show: Dhoni hit a quick-fire double hundred to take the game away from Australia Australia made the ideal start when their only frontline spinner, Nathan Lyon, bowled Tendulkar through the gate. His dismissal after a 10-over period of low scoring and disciplined bowling brought in Dhoni, whose arrival prompted an increase in the run rate as he and Kohli took to the visiting bowling attack. Kohli launched a Lyon delivery into the stands in the 68th over before Dhoni found the ropes twice off the same bowler in the 72nd. Moises Henriques was next to … Continue reading

Twin tests for malaria control

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2013

New Delhi, Feb. 24: Novel genetic mutations in malaria parasites and an infected population without symptoms observed for the first time in Bengal may hamper efforts to control a lethal form of malaria, researchers have said. The genetic mutations appear linked to drug resistance in malaria parasites and highlight the need to revise the existing primary treatment strategy, said scientists at Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, who spotted the mutations have. In an independent study, researchers at the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine have detected a tribal population in Purulia district infected with the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, but without any symptoms whatsoever of the disease. While doctors have sporadically reported cases of such asymptomatic infections earlier from states with high malaria prevalence, such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa, scientists say this is the first report from Bengal. "Asymptomatic infected persons remain a hidden reservoir of the parasite," said Swagata Ganguly, a medical researcher and a member of the CSTM team. "They don't seek treatment and facilitate transmission of the parasite." The CSTM team led by Ardhendu Maji examined about 1,040 members of a tribal population in a forested area of Purulia in June 2012 and found that about eight per cent … Continue reading
