WUSTL researcher gets $2.25 million grant to better understand traumatic brain injury

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2013

Public release date: 22-Feb-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Neil Schoenherr nschoenherr@wustl.edu 314-935-5235 Washington University in St. Louis Washington University in St. Louis engineering researchers have received a five-year, $2.25 million grant to better understand traumatic brain injuries in efforts to improve methods for prevention and treatment. Philip Bayly, PhD, the Lilyan and E. Lisle Hughes Professor of Mechanical Engineering and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, is principal investigator of the grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The grant will allow Bayly and his research team to develop 3-D computer models of brain biomechanics that will give researchers and clinicians a better understanding about what happens to the brain during traumatic brain injury. Previously, Bayly and his research team measured brain motion and mechanical properties of the brain in 2-D. Head injuries, concussions and the resulting trauma have been in public discussion recently as the National Football League (NFL) deals with a lawsuit regarding head injuries by about one-third of living former NFL players. The league is accused of not providing information connecting football-related head injuries to brain damage, memory loss and other long-term health issues. "We are concerned about everyone … Continue reading

MS Dhoni doesn't back out-of-form players: VVS Laxman

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2013

Chennai: Former India batsman VVS Laxman on Saturday criticized India captain MS Dhoni for keeping aloof from struggling players when they need him most. Laxman, who is part of the Star Cricket commentary team for the first Test against Australia here, gave the example of Harbhajan Singh who he thinks needs plenty of encouragement considering that the offspinner, playing his 100th Test, is going through a lean patch. Laxman was baffled at Dhoni for not bringing Harbhajan into the attack in the first hour of play on day two on Saturday. "Dhoni is sending out the wrong message by keeping Harbhajan on the sidelines. He is making him [Harbhajan] feel unwanted in the team," he said on-air. "A guy who is playing his 100th Test doesn't deserve that sort of treatment." Harbhajan was finally brought into the attack after a gap of 51 overs despite other India bowlers failing to break the dogged stand between overnight batsmen Michael Clarke and Peter Siddle. That miffed Laxman, who said this wasn't the first time that Harbhajan had been looked through by his captain. Research at BU aims to cure Parkinson's, while federal research funding is threatened

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2013

February 22, 2013 Updated Feb 22, 2013 at 10:33 PM CST PEORIA, Ill -- Cutting edge stem-cell research is being done right here in our own community. However, the looming federal sequestration is putting all research funding at risk. Dr. Craig Cady along with seven of his students, are attempting to find a cure or treatment for Parkinson's Disease, heart disease and ovarian cancer on the campus of Bradley University. "We have to understand the disease, how the stem cells can be used to treat the disease," said Dr. Cady. He adds, with increasing technology they get closer to clinical trials all the time, "We're also in animal model research with our cancer work and then for our Parkinson's we're also very close to an animal model also." East Peoria residents Barb and Roger Hallen visited the lab Friday afternoon. Barb was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2008. She said, "You slowly slow down everything and the symptoms just year by year, it starts out on one side of your body and then develops." Dr. Cady said each patient they meet is a huge motivator and allows them to put a face to the research. "Everyday we're working with cells … Continue reading

Stem cell heart repairs: 21st century medicine in action

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2013

Gerard Cuomo loves to dance. Until recently, however, the 70-year-old couldnt even do a two-step. After having three heart attacks in the early 1990s, Cuomos heart was severely damaged. The scar tissue that had formed around his heart left him easily fatigued. I felt like an old man, said Cuomo of Aventura. I could barely climb the stairs. I could walk for about a quarter of a mile. Shopping at the mall I wish I did not have to sit down all the time. In May 2010, he participated in a University of Miami Miller School of Medicines clinical trial in which doctors injected stem cells directly into his heart muscle. The stem cells, because they are not fully formed, have the potential to grow into different kinds of cells, internalizing information from their environment to determine their future growth. The study found that the injections built up the healthy heart tissue and reduced scar tissue by 33 percent a dramatic improvement, said Dr. Joshua Hare, director of UMs Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute, which conducted the study with Johns Hopkins University. The new tissue remodeled the heart to look more like a healthy, football-shaped heart. This is a real example … Continue reading

Test the Children

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2013

Two big advisory groups have updated their stance on genetic testing and screening of children for the first time in more than a decade this week. The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics and the American Academy of Pediatrics released a joint policy statement in the journal Pediatrics and a scientific paper backing up their recommendations in Genetics in Medicine. The new advice hinges less on the potential harms of genetic information to the psyches of kids and their parents than the groups' earlier positions, and encourages testing that is in children's best interest. For those looking to avoid slogging through the whole document, Scientific American has a "Cliff's Notes" version at its guest blog. Among the specific advice the new statement puts forward is a distinction between predictive testing for diseases that affect kids while they are still kids, and testing for diseases that only affect people once they are adults. The new guide gives the thumbs up to genetic tests for children who have no symptoms but who are at risk for childhood-onset diseases, recommending that ideally children give their consent to the testing as well. According to Ricki Lewis, writing at Sciam, the new recommendations have … Continue reading

Agriculture and parting from wolves shaped dog evolution, study finds

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2013

Part of the ancient mystery of the makeup of the modern Western dog has been solved by a team led by researchers at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. Several thousand years after dogs originated in the Middle East and Europe, some of them moved south with ancient farmers, distancing themselves from native wolf populations and developing a distinct genetic profile that is now reflected in todays canines. These findings, based on the rate of genetic marker mutations in the dogs Y chromosome, supply the missing piece to the puzzle of when ancient dogs expanded from Southeast Asia. The study results are published online this month in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution. Our findings reconcile more than a decade of apparently contradictory archaeological and genetic findings on the geographic origins of the dogs, said Ben Sacks, lead study author and director of the Canid Diversity and Conservation Group in the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Considerable archaeological evidence indicates that the first dogs appeared about 14,000 years ago in Europe and the Middle East, while dogs did not appear in Southeast Asia until about 7,000 years later. Scientists have been … Continue reading
