Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2013

Patients coming to see Dr. James Cocores will be disappointed to discover he's not in his Boca Raton office Friday. Instead, the psychiatrist is in jail. MUGSHOTS: Who Got Arrested In South Florida? Cocores was arrested late Thursday and taken to the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of trafficking in opium and writing an unlawful prescription for at least $1,000 worth of dangerous drugs. Boca Raton police said an undercover officer posing as a patient sought prescription medication and counseling for a traumatic event. Police said Cocores prescribed multiple medications to her, including Xanax, Vicodin, Percocet and Oxycodone, over several months, even though he never gave her a physical examination or took any vital statistics. Cocores specializes in drug abuse treatment and opiate addiction. WPBF 25 News' Terri Parker reported that Cocores is a psychiatrist and neurologist with 33 years of experience, according to online doctor biographies. He once wrote an article claiming "obesity is a disease of the brain." Also, Cocores went to medical school in the Domincan Republic, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office booking blotter. He was released on bond. FDA approves new targeted breast cancer drug

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) The Food and Drug Administration has approved a first-of-a-kind breast cancer medication that targets tumor cells while sparing healthy ones. The drug Kadcyla from Roche combines the established drug Herceptin with a powerful chemotherapy drug and a third chemical linking the medicines together. The chemical keeps the cocktail intact until it binds to a cancer cell, delivering a potent dose of anti-tumor poison. Cancer researchers say the drug is an important step forward because it delivers more medication while reducing the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy. "This antibody goes seeking out the tumor cells, gets internalized and then explodes them from within. So it's very kind and gentle on the patients there's no hair loss, no nausea, no vomiting," said Dr. Melody Cobleigh of Rush University Medical Center. "It's a revolutionary way of treating cancer." Cobleigh helped conduct the key studies of the drug at the Chicago facility. The FDA approved the new treatment for about 20 percent of breast cancer patients with a form of the disease that is typically more aggressive and less responsive to hormone therapy. These patients have tumors that overproduce a protein known as HER-2. Breast cancer is the second most deadly form … Continue reading

FDA approves breast cancer drug developed by ImmunoGen

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2013

By Robert Weisman, Globe Staff Federal regulators Friday morning said they approved T-DM1, a promising new breast cancer therapy with potentially serious side effects, for sale in the United States. Key components of the drug were developed by Waltham biotechnology company ImmunoGen Inc., but the drug is being marketed by its partner, the Genentech division of Swiss drugmaker Roche AG, under the brand name Kadcyla. Kadcyla was approved for sale to patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease, who have received prior treatment with the drug Herceptin along with a chemotherapy. It is the first antibody-drug conjugate for the disease okayed by the Food and Drug Administration. The approval comes two and a half years after the FDA surprised ImmunoGen, Genentech, and the patient community by rebuffing a bid to give T-DM1 fast-track status in a refuse to file letter that declined to accept an application for accelerated review. While many patients have been taking the drugs in clinical trials or through so-called compassionate use programs, others have been unable to obtain it, sparking protest against the FDA. In a statement Friday, the FDA did not address that controversy. But it said Kadcyla is being … Continue reading

Good medicine in long run

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2013

With pharmaceutical companies having to state the negative side effects of taking their products, drug commercials are often deadly comical. They usually go something like this: If you cant sleep, take medication X and you will sleep like a baby. Warning, side effects may include loss of consciousness and bladder, heart and lung malfunctions. Death could occur with frequent use. Interestingly, the acknowledged potential and serious negative side effects of drugs dont seem to adversely impact sales. People, it would seem, like their drugs and are willing to turn a blind eye to any potential negative outcome, until, of course, their lives become threatened by one of the serious side effects, and then they will likely look to sue the drug company. Much like pharmaceutical companies, congressional Republicans over the past four years have been selling debt and deficit remedies with serious side effects for the economy and the American people, and that is why I am rooting for the March 1 sequestration deadline and the automatic spending cuts it triggers to come to pass, because as the old saying goes, who feels it, knows. The sequestration deadline came out of the Budget Control Act of 2011. The act cut … Continue reading

Drugs, property seized in Brooks Co. drug raid

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2013

BROOKS COUNTY, GA (WALB) - A drug raid took a lot of drugs off the streets of Brooks County. A father and son and the father's girlfriend now all face multiple charges. A night raid on February 5th turned out to be a lucrative drug bust for the Brooks County Sheriff's Office. Two pounds of marijuana, cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, nearly$10,000 in cash, 20 guns, three four-wheelers, andfour vehicles were all seized. "I hate to see people mess their lives up with drugs, and being born and raised in Brooks County, most of the folks dealing in this county I've known for years," said Sheriff Mike Dewey. For Dewey, this bust came as a shock. Patrick Newell and his son Anthony were both arrested as well as the father's girlfriend, Sienna Holloway. "I just regret that I've known them all my life and didn't even suspect them of doing this," said Dewey. Officials say they had been investigating this case for about a month, but had no idea when they raided the home they would find so many drugs. "Especially all of the guns, being that one was fully automatic, some were stolen, a stolen four-wheeler, you know we had … Continue reading
