Stem cell 'homing' signal may help treat heart failure patients

Feb. 21, 2013 In the first human study of its kind, researchers activated heart failure patients' stem cells with gene therapy to improve their symptoms, heart function and quality of life, according to a study in the American Heart Association journal Circulation Research. Researchers delivered a gene that encodes a factor called SDF-1 to activate stem cells like a "homing" signal. The study is unique because researchers introduced the "homing" factor to draw stem cells to the site of injury and enhance the body's stem cell-based repair process. Generally, researchers extract and expand the number of cells, then deliver them back to the subject. "We believe stem cells are always trying to repair tissue, but they don't do it well -- not because we lack stem cells but, rather, the signals that regulate our stem cells are impaired," said Marc S. Penn, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Research at Summa Cardiovascular Institute in Akron, Ohio, and lead author and professor of medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio. Fatal drug overdoses continue to rise in the U.S. Most are accidental and involve prescription painkillers such as OxyContin and Percocet. Published: Feb. 20, 2013 at 1:24 PM According to research published Tuesday from the National Center for Health Statistics, 38,329 people died of drug overdoses in the United States in 2010, up from the previous year and the latest in a series of studies showing fatal trends involving prescription painkillers. In 2010, 57% of overdoses, or more than 22,000, involved known prescription drugs. Three-quarters of those involved painkillers like Oxycontin and Percocet while another 9,400 involved unidentified drug combinations. More than 74% of all prescription drug deaths were accidental. Only 17% of overdoses were determined suicides. Drugs in the opioid family, like Oxycontin, methadone and codeine, were often present in fatal drug cocktails. An opioid was found in 77% of overdoses that involved benzodiazepine, a depressant like Valium, Xanax or Ativan. GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - Angie Steadman is a former meth addict who has turned her life around. "Once I tried it, and got into it then it was very addictive. I was addicted immediately," Steadman said. Users said the drug is easy to get and easy to make. They make meth by using pseudoephedrine, which is a decongestant found in cold medicine. "I got caught up in a pretty heavy, heavy duty situation as a result of some of those things. As a result, I was involved with people that were involved with meth manufacture," Steadman said. "I was doing things I would have never done in my right mind," Steadman said. "Then it got to the point where you could only buy two at a time." Vivus Obesity Drug Rejected Again By European Regulators

Vivus Inc. (VVUS)s obesity drug, approved in July in the U.S., failed for a second time to gain the backing of European regulators because of its potential side effects. The European Medicines Agencys Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use recommended against approving Vivuss pill in October because of concern about the long-term effects on the heart and nervous system. Vivus appealed, and the Mountain View, California-based company said today in a statement that its request was rejected. The agency, called CHMP, said Vivus must conduct a cardiovascular trial to show the drug, which would be called Qsiva in Europe, is safe before it could be approved. We are disappointed with the CHMP decision regarding Qsiva and the position the committee adopted with respect to the need for a pre-approval cardiovascular outcomes trial, Peter Tam, president of Vivus, said in the statement. A majority of CHMP members have failed to recognize the importance of making this treatment option available, particularly for patients whose only effective intervention is surgery.
