Solitary Confinement 2013 (W Block) In their Government class, students learned various aspects of the criminal justice system, with a focus on understanding how Court precedents influence the interpretation of the Constitution. They chose a specific research topic related to issues surrounding Mass Incarceration (the phenomenon where large segments of US society - 2.4 million total - are currently behind bars), such as "Stop Frisk" policies, Private Prisons, Incarcerated Women, the War on Drugs, Juvenile Justice, and Immigration Detention. After creating individual fliers on their topic, students were grouped together, and given the task of creating a 4-5 minute film. By: brosenteacher … Continue reading

Sunday Telegraph sports editor David Riccio reveals the results of an exhaustive survey into what fans think of the football codes in light of the doping accusations. Source: The Daily Telegraph NO ONE considered the fans. ASADA and the Australian Crime Commission cared little for collateral damage. It has been 10 days since Australian sport's biggest bombshell reverberated around the world. But the fans have voted loud and clear. They aren't about to turn their back on their heroes. Kids down the local oval, tradies at the pub, mums at soccer registration day, the frustration and anger has infiltrated the suburbs and spread wider than any supposed drug ring. So today The Sunday Telegraph gives you a voice - a chance to tell Crime Commission boss John Lawler what you really think of the report. And it is evident belief and faith still exists in the country's top footballers. Over four days last week, more than 22,000 fans logged on to our website as part of an exclusive survey. The drugs in sport survey was a participant-driven web poll and was not statistically weighted. There is a fear of the impact of betting sponsorships and concerns that ASADA will never … Continue reading

Pill to Gill: Antianxiety Drugs Flushed into Water May Be Making Fishes Fearless

Posted: Published on February 17th, 2013

Antianxiety drugs may be making fishes more aggressive. New laboratory tests reveal that even extremely low concentrations of the calming drugs benzodiazepinesmore commonly known as Valium, Xanax and otherscause fishes to become less timid and to feed faster, among other effects."This is an essential drug that is used around the world," said chemist Jerker Fick of Umea University in Sweden at a press conference preceding publication of the research in Science. Benzodiapines calm people with anxiety by stimulating the GABA receptor, enhancing the sedative effect of that neurotransmitter. The drugs are then excreted in urine, often as the compound oxazepama drug that is produced when the body breaks down some benzodiazepines. Then there are all the compounds are flushed down the toilet. But humans are not the only animals with GABA receptors. "It is present in almost all vertebrates. All fish have these," Fick added.A previous survey revealed that low levels of such antianxiety drugs contaminated Swedens waterways, reaching levels as high as 0.58 microgram per liter. Oxazepam in particular proved long-lasting because even sunlight failed to break it down. As a result, the compound built up in the tissue of wild-caught perch, reaching levels of 3.6 micrograms per kilogramor more … Continue reading

Bahawalpur has always been a seat of higher learning. Uch Sharif (a nearby ancient town) had one of the largest universities in the world where scholars from all over the world used to come for studies. As a continuation of this tradition a religious University (Jamia Abbasia) was established in Bahawalpur in 1925, following the academic pursuits of Jamia Al-Azhar, Egypt. In view of the changing scenario, Jamia Abbasia was declared as a general University in 1975, and was renamed as The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Initially, it started functioning at Abbasia and Khawaja Fareed Campuses with ten Departments. The sand dunes have been converted into faculties, green lawns, hostels, residential colony, farms and orchards. It is known as Baghdad-ul-Jadeed Campus.
