Warning: 'Side Effects' May Include Eye-Rolling

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

In Steven Soderbergh's medical thriller Side Effects, Emily (Rooney Mara) goes through an emotional crisis and then a psychopharmacological one after her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) is released from prison. Side Effects Rated R for violence, profanity, drug use With: Channing Tatum, Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones It's the drug's fault, man. That's the defense offered by the perpetrator brought to trial in Side Effects, a stylish, vaguely Hitchcockian dud. But what excuse does this fatally silly movie have? The film, reportedly the final big-screen effort for prolific director Steven Soderbergh, begins in a New York apartment where something bad has happened. Blood on the floor, smeared and tracked by footprints, suggests murder, suicide or extreme clumsiness. It's not the last option, of course. But then the story hits rewind, postponing the moment when we learn who was hurt, and how. Three months earlier, Emily (Rooney Mara) is waiting for her husband's release from prison. Martin (Channing Tatum) isn't the violent type; he went away for insider trading. Yes, the beefy actor who usually plays dancers, thugs or thuggish dancers is now impersonating a Wall Street broker. It's dubious casting, but not nearly so implausible as the script. Emily … Continue reading

Child Poverty In UK 'The Bigger Picture' – Video

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

Child Poverty In UK'The Bigger Picture' As many as 2.3 million children are not being included in official poverty statistics despite living "materially deprived" lives, according to a new report. Households are currently deemed to be living below the poverty line if the money coming in is less than 60% of the average income. But the think tank Policy Exchange says that definition is too narrow and that social deprivation should also be considered. "It doesn't matter if you are just above the line or below the line," said the head of economics and social policy at the organisation, Matthew Oakley . "If you have poor education, poor housing, you're struggling with family life, there's debt in the household, we should be trying to help these families... Just focusing on income clearly isn't enough." Ruth Woodgate lives with her two daughters in the Nelson ward of Great Yarmouth, where nearly half of all children suffer poverty. With 209 coming in each week, they are living way below the poverty line. All too often she relies on her bowl of coppers to find enough money for a loaf of bread. "I find I'm constantly … Continue reading

Drug Users Turn Death Dealers as Methadone From Bain Hits Street

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

After Jennifer Vanlieu turned to methadone treatment to beat an addiction to heroin and pain pills, she morphed from drug-user to convicted drug-dealer. Vanlieu said she got a carryout methadone dose at a clinic operated by CRC Health Corp. in Richmond, Indiana, in March, 2010, and then gave about 15 milligrams to her friend Carissa Plemons. Plemons died hours later, after ingesting a lethal mix of methadone and other drugs, according to police reports. Take-home methadone -- doses patients carry out instead of taking at clinics -- enabled the abuse, said Vanlieu, 26, who was sentenced to six years in prison for dealing the drug to Plemons. While she didnt sell it to her friend, she said in an interview that other clinic patients often re-sold their take- homes. CRC is owned by Boston-based Bain Capital Partners LLC and is the largest U.S. provider of methadone treatment. Some would sell it in the parking lot, she said. Liquid methadone, used for decades to help addicts abate withdrawal symptoms as they quit heroin or other opiates, is leaking into illegal street sales via take-home doses, according to law-enforcement officials in Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia. Investigators in each of those … Continue reading

Prison is just another form of 'welfare dependency' for criminals, Tory MP says

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

He points out that Britain is at the top of the European league tables for reoffending rates even though it is spending more on crime and justice than ever before. "Elsewhere in Europe, the prison population has followed crime rates down. Yet back here in Blighty we are ramming our prisons full, spending a fortune in the process and doing very little to turn criminals lives around In sum, we are spending far more to achieve less and less. That is lunacy and anathema to any Conservative. Mr Gummer also said the Right should object to the fact that prisons cause a "waste of life". "For many criminals, prison is just another welfare dependency, and we might challenge its over-use on those grounds alone," he added. "The failure to tackle mental health, profound psychological disorder, drug and alcohol addiction and moral vacuity, is in itself a crime on societys part. We put people behind walls and then forget about them. That is wrong. The MP said Chris Grayling, the Justice Secretary, is making progress but more reform of Britain's "failing" prison system is needed. Mr Grayling said he wanted to be a "tough" Justice Secretary when he took over the … Continue reading

Drugs in Sport: Stunned sports bodies admit they need help to fight back

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

Australian sport has reacted swiftly to the Australian Crime Commission report about widespread drugs cheating and organised crime links. Jason Clare, the national Minister for Home Affairs and Justice, summed up the mood of anger. "The findings are shocking and will disgust Australian sports fans," he said. "It is cheating but it is worse than that. It's cheating with the help of criminals. We're talking about multiple athletes across multiple codes." There has been horror at the end of the ACC's 12-month investigation of performance-enhancing drugs being taken across sports, with the complicity of coaches and sports scientists, and distributed by organised crime, leading to potential risks of match-fixing. John Lawler, the commission chief executive, said he hoped criminal charges would be laid, while the Government has already introduced legislation to increase the powers of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (Asada). Major Australian sports will create integrity units which will work together. Australia's rugby league body, the NRL, reacted quickly. Its integrity compliance unit will be headed by former Federal Court judge Tony Whitlam. The NRL chief executive, Dave Smith, admitted it "affects more than one player at more than one club". Communications giant Telstra recently paid A$50m (32.7m) for … Continue reading

Europe Pushes to Keep Lethal Injection Drugs From U.S. Prisons

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

Pharmaceutical makers have long promoted their products as a means to enhance or prolong life. Now some have been enmeshed in a transatlantic battle over whether their drugs can also be used to end it. Europe is escalating its war on the U.S. practice of executing inmates with prescription drugs, and theyre making it harder for prisons in the 33 states where lethal injection is legal to acquire their weapons of choice. The U.S. is one of only two developed democracies to use capital punishment. The other, Japan, executes by hanging. Not only is capital punishment outlawed across Europe, but European policy is also to work actively for abolition of the death penalty worldwide, says Sarah Ludford, a member of the European Parliament. By persuading responsible pharmaceutical companies to supervise their distribution chain and by getting controls on exports from Europe tightened, U.S. prisons ability to procure their death machine supplies has been thwarted. Lethal injection usually involves three drugs: one to put an inmate to sleep, one to paralyze the muscles, and one to stop the heart. First adopted by Oklahoma more than 35 years ago, that protocol had been little changed until Europe two years ago began limiting … Continue reading

Drugs in Sport: Australia's 'blackest day' could easily be repeated in Britain

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

Andy Parkinson, the head of British anti-doping, has warned that the drug scandal rocking Australian sport could easily hit the UK too. The Australian Crime Commission has released a report after a 12-month investigation into the use of performance-enhancing drugs across sport in the country, which pointed to the influence of organised crime in drug distribution and possibly match-fixing too. Richard Ings, the former head of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (Asada), said: "This is not a black day in Australian sport, this is the blackest day." But Parkinson, the head of UK Anti-Doping (Ukas), told The Independent that Britain had a similar sporting culture to Australia and could not be complacent. "I wasn't particularly shocked by it," he said, "because it's how people in anti-doping have viewed the world for a number of years. "The sporting environment in the UK and Australia is largely the same," Parkinson explained when asked if Britain might be vulnerable. "The importance placed on sport is largely the same as well. The threat [the ACC] identify as in the substances and the availability, that's very similar to our view on life." Parkinson pointed to last month's ban of javelin coach Ian Burns when he … Continue reading
