Florida man pleads guilty in cancer drug scheme

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A Florida man has pleaded guilty in San Diego to running a scheme that sold more than $7 million worth of unapproved cancer drugs. UT San Diego (http://bit.ly/WPbfqU ) says Martin Bean of Boca Raton pleaded to a conspiracy charge on Tuesday in federal court. Prosecutors say Bean bought unapproved drugs from manufacturers in Turkey, India and Pakistan then took orders from doctors through his website and sold them at a steep discount. The drugs were funneled through a San Diego company with a wholesale pharmacy license to make them seem legitimate. Authorities say Bean sold more than $7 million worth of the drugs from 2005 to 2011. The owner of the San Diego company pleaded guilty to conspiracy last year and faces five years in prison. State has ordered full or partial shutdowns at 11 pharmacies

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

The state has issued cease and desist letters to 11 pharmacies for a range of violations, and cited another 21 for minor deficiencies, since inspectors started making unannounced visits in the wake of a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak that began at a Framingham compounding pharmacy. The disturbing results of these inspections, and the need for regulators to force the closure of all or part of 11 compounding pharmacies, are further evidence of another systemic failure of oversight by state government, said Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr in a statement. If the current system tolerated this degree of regulatory noncompliance, then clearly, its time for serious reform. Beyond merely distributing medication, compounding pharmacies produce special batches of medication for individual patients. New England Compounding Center was allegedly using its compounding license to produce wholesale quantities of medications in violation of its license, and unsanitary conditions lead to the shipping of tainted steroids causing 696 infections and 45 deaths in 20 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In the wake of that outbreak, the Board of Registration in Pharmacy started unannounced inspections on the states 40 sterile compounding pharmacies, and has since ordered 11 pharmacies to close or shut down … Continue reading

Drug Court success paves way for Criminal Justice Reform

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

Tuesday, the Northern Hills Drug Court saw three more people graduate, a number that's expected to grow very soon. It's an alternative to locking up repeat offenders that could save the state millions. Drug court proves successful and the program could soon expand across South Dakota. Including the most recent graduates, a total of 30 people have avoided prison, pledging to lead a drug free life. South Dakota currently has only five drug courts. Judge Jerome Eckrich says approximately 87 percent of female inmates and 84 percent of male inmates who entered the corrections system in 2010 were diagnosed with a drug or alcohol dependency. And 60 percent of those who have graduated, said they have not used drugs 6 months later. "It's actually a sign of the times. This is what we can expect to see across the state. If you want something easy go to prison. If you want something hard, come into drug court," said Eckrich. "It changed my entire life. I've had to learn things that I never thought I could. I didn't work before, I never had to, I had to teach myself how to keep a job," said graduate Chance Williams. Judge Eckrich says … Continue reading

How To Deal With Anxiety - uKnowMo Visit our site to know more about how to deal with anxiety http://www.uknowmo.com Although there are a wide variety of possible treatments for anxiety, many of them boil down to the one concept that YOU are the center of your problems. You must first understand and accept the fact that anxiety is, in essence, a figment of your own imagination. That in itself is very rarely enough to help people from experiencing the debilitating symptoms, but it is the first step in dealing with anxiety. Short of various drugs, herbs and medical help, here are a few tips that you should remember in your day to day to help you control bouts of anxiety when they happen to arise. First, you should take some time out to write down what it is that causes you anxiety, and the scale at which it causes it. If the dog barking makes you feel a bit uneasy, mark that down as a 1. If you are faced with decisions that make you uncomfortable at work, maybe mark that down as a 3. If you have no job, no money and a huge mortgage that scares you … Continue reading

Officer allegedly took cash, drugs in bribery case, the FBI says

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

A San Luis Obispo police detective was arrested on suspicion of taking drugs and cash in a bribery scheme, federal authorities said Tuesday. Cory Pierce, 39, was taken into custody by FBI agents Tuesday morning after he was charged with one count of bribery in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, authorities said. Pierce, a detective with the San Luis Obispo Police Department, is charged with taking cash and narcotics from two people he described as "cooperating witnesses" while he worked on a multi-agency task force. In return, Pierceallegedly provided the pair with drugs for their own use as well as fake drugs to sell to dealers, according to the FBI. The two people are now cooperating with the FBI in the ongoing criminal investigation. The complaint alleges that Pierce provided one of his sources methamphetamine that was still in police evidence bags. Pierce is charged with having one of his sources set up a meeting with a drug dealer. "Following the meeting, Pierce pulled over the dealer's vehicle at gunpoint, seized morphine pills and let the dealer go without making an arrest," the FBI said in a statement. Pierce also allegedly informed his sources … Continue reading
