Woburn pharmacy cited by state

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

A Woburn pharmacy was one of 11 issued cease and desist letters by the state after inspectors started making unannounced visits in the wake of a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak that began at a Framingham compounding pharmacy. PalliMed Solutions Pharmacy in Woburn was ordered to stop producing sildenafil citrate on Nov. 27 after inspectors discovered the pharmacy used improper components in the drugs preparation. It has since submitted a correction plan for review. Beyond merely distributing medication, compounding pharmacies produce special batches of medication for individual patients. New England Compounding Center in Framingham was allegedly using its compounding license to produce wholesale quantities of medications in violation of its license, and unsanitary conditions lead to the shipping of tainted steroids causing 696 infections and 45 deaths in 20 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In the wake of that outbreak, the Board of Registration in Pharmacy started unannounced inspections on the states 40 sterile compounding pharmacies and has since ordered 11 pharmacies to close or shut down some of their operation, according to the Department of Public Health. "The disturbing results of these inspections, and the need for regulators to force the closure of all or part of … Continue reading

Nano Track – Self cleaning coating on glass with nanotechnology, test with dirty water – Video

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

Nano Track - Self cleaning coating on glass with nanotechnology, test with dirty water Nano Track offers a coating that makes most surfaces become almost maintenance free and easily cleaned. This is because the coating makes the surface water repellent (hydrophobic) with very strong anti-stick properties. Because of this, dirt is picked up by water and then gets carried away. It also means that fouling can't grow on the surface. The coating is weather and UV resistant and it even withstands temperature changes, both plus and minus over time. This probably leads to an extended lifetime of the product. In regards to health, environmenta and safety our coating does not contain any nanoparticles. We use SiO2 liquid and it is called "nano" because of it's thickness which is below 100nm (nm = nanometer). The coating works with small modifications on glass, glazed ceramics, plastic, painted surfaces like automotive paint, precious metals, textile, microporous surfaces and stone (mineral surfaces). Study: Gift bans in medical school affect doctors’ later prescribing patterns

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

By Chelsea Conaboy, Globe Staff Doctors who attended medical schools that limited gifts to students from pharmaceutical companies -- sponsored lunches, for example -- may be less susceptible to drug marketing, a study published last week in the BMJ found. Researchers from Yale University looked at the prescribing practices of doctors who had attended one of 14 schools that were early adopters of such policies. They looked at how often the physicians prescribed Vyvanse or Invega, two heavily marketed drugs used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia, over older, similar drugs. Compared with doctors who attended the same schools before the gift ban was in place and peers from other schools, the physicians were less likely to prescribe the two marketed psychotropic drugs. Increasingly, medical schools are sharpening policies prohibiting drug marketing on campus as researchers add to the evidence that it can influence physician attitudes and behavior over the long term. The University of Massachusetts Medical School, for example, enacted a policy in 2008 prohibiting students from accepting gifts from drug and device makers. Harvard Medical School also bans pharmaceutical representatives from visiting campus, and companies cannot sponsor student events. The Yale study found that the counter-effect … Continue reading

Teen boy with autism dies at treatment facility

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

Joseph was 14 years old and being treated at Rose Rock. His first day there last Friday happened to be his last. Its mess up and I dont even know what to feel to have my brother, my little brother gone, Winters said. He was strangled and basically he suffocated. The police report states Joseph was 6-foot-2and 300 pounds. The family was told he may have needed to be restrained by staffers and at some point he stopped breathing. The Medical Examiners office hasnt determined a cause of death. Rose Rock is a private facility but the DHS Licensing Unit conducted an investigation of the facility, supervision, staffing and training. They did not find any non-compliance issues under any of those categories. Theyre not compliant, when you dont have video of him dying, Winters said. One reason the family enrolled Joseph in the program is because this facility is equipped with cameras at every turn. Can autism be prevented?

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

According to the CDC, one in 88 children have been identified as having an autism spectrum disorder. The statistic rates used to be one in 150 so how did we get these new numbers? Dr. Rober Melillo, co-founder of the Brain Balance Achievement Centers, spoke with Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor for FoxNews.com, about the science behind autism, as well the facts and myths surrounding the condition. Melillo said that while the current numbers are staggering, its quite possible the rates are even higher. It's an epidemic at this point, and we are seeing significant increases, which means that the only way you can explain it is through environmental factors, Melillo said. There is no such thing as a genetic epidemic; it takes a lot longer for genes to cause this type of rise. However, Melillo does believe that autism is often a result of environmental factors combined with genetic predisposition. The most potent lifestyle factors are diet and exercise and inflammation in the body. Fortunately, Melillo identified numerous preventative measures parents can take to better ensure their child will not be born with autism. All of these measures are included in his book, Autism: The Scientific Truth … Continue reading

Autism coverage

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

For the sake of Utah children, who have the highest rate of autism in the nation, the Utah Legislature should require insurance companies to cover the cost of autism treatment. Thirty-two states most of them not as blatantly self-labeled as Utahs "family-values" state already have laws similar to the one proposed by freshman Sen. Brian Shiozawa, R-Cottonwood Heights, who is past president of the Utah Medical Association. SB55 rightly recognizes that thousands of Utah children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder would benefit if insurers covered the cost of early treatment. The bill requires coverage of the diagnosis and treatment of autism, including speech, occupational and physical therapy, along with applied behavior analysis for up to $50,000 a year for children under age 9 and $25,000 for children ages 9 to 18. Data collected by Autism Speaks, a national advocacy group, shows that autism coverage increases premiums an average of just 31 cents per member, per month. Still, the Salt Lake Chamber and insurance companies are likely to fight the legislation. To address concerns that small employers might drop insurance coverage altogether because of the cost of adding autism coverage, Shiozawa included exceptions to the mandate. The bill wouldnt affect self-insured … Continue reading

Stroke damage in mice overcome by training that 'rewires' brain centers

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013

Public release date: 5-Feb-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Stephanie Desmon sdesmon1@jhmi.edu 410-955-8665 Johns Hopkins Medicine Johns Hopkins researchers have found that mice can recover from physically debilitating strokes that damage the primary motor cortex, the region of the brain that controls most movement in the body, if the rodents are quickly subjected to physical conditioning that rapidly "rewires" a different part of the brain to take over lost function. Their research, featuring precise, intense and early treatment, and tantalizing clues to the role of a specific brain area in stroke recovery, is described online in the journal Stroke. "Despite all of our approved therapies, stroke patients still have a high likelihood of ending up with deficits," says study leader Steven R. Zeiler, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "This research allows us the opportunity to test meaningful training and pharmacological ways to encourage recovery of function, and should impact the care of patients." With improved acute care for stroke, more patients are surviving. Still, as many as 60 percent are left with diminished use of an arm or leg, and one-third need placement in a long-term care facility. … Continue reading
