Legal team sues drug maker Hoffmann-La Roche Limited over popular acne medicine

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

LONDON, ON, Feb. 4, 2013 /CNW/ - When Jennifer Twamley was prescribed Accutane at 17 to control her acne, little did she know the long-term impact the drug would have on her life. Twamley, 33, now suffers from Ulcerative Colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which lawyers Barb Legate of Legate & Associates and Dave Williams of Harrison Pensa say is a side effect of Accutane. Twamley has undergone two surgeries, including removal of her colon. "It's been devastating," says Twamley, whose career and lifestyle have been drastically curtailed. "I wish I had never taken that drug. Having a chronic illness is isolating." Twamley, a television producer, is suing drug maker Hoffmann-La Roche over Accutane in what is known as a mass tort, one of the first in Canada involving the acne drug. The lawsuit was filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. A mass tort is a group of lawsuits involving individuals who share similar complaints as a result of their experiences with a drug or defective product. Mass torts are common in the United States, where Roche has already been successfully sued for millions of dollars in connection with the manufacture and sale of Accutane. Roche stopped … Continue reading

Side effects reporting improved

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

Health Canada is ramping up efforts to get more doctors to report when their patients suffer side effects to medications. The campaign, which the federal regulator hopes will improve drug safety, follows a Toronto Star investigation that revealed problems with Health Canadas monitoring of patient side effects. The investigation found side effects are under-reported, in part because of a flawed drug safety law that does not require Canadas medical professionals to report serious adverse reactions to drugs. Though the system remains voluntary, Health Canada is now placing notices in 22 journals for health professionals that explain the process and importance of reporting adverse side effects. Health Canada also commissioned Accreditation Canada, a nonprofit organization that assesses the performance of many of Canadas hospitals and other health facilities, to develop a new standard on reporting adverse side effects. The reports, which detail reactions as varied as nausea to convulsions to suicide, are intended to play a pivotal role in regulating drug safety. While increased reporting is important, the Stars investigation found Health Canada was not alerting the public to the magnitude of these side effects. This is because the regulator has not analyzed the data it collects. After a controlled-setting clinical … Continue reading

A medical team in Arizona has spent the last 10 years reaching out to homeless teens. The United Methodist Outreach Ministries of Phoenix supports a full-service clinic in an RV. Doctors treat everything from colds and flu, to referrals for depression and attempted suicide. They also offer gentle life coaching that has helped a lot of young patients go on to college, nursing school, and better futures. Medical Director Dr. Randy Christensen says, "My biggest dream is to continue to educate people on how worthwhile these kids are, how terrible their life has been before but just how much of success they can have if just given half a chance." 17 USC 107 Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 USC 106 and 17 USC 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such … Continue reading

By Shaun Connolly, Political Correspondent Monday, February 04, 2013 Outspoken TD Luke Ming Flanagan claimed other Dil members take drugs as he defended his decision to reveal he has experiences of LSD, cocaine, and ecstasy. The Independent TD hit back at suggestions he was sending out the wrong message to young people by saying he was being more honest than his colleagues who are not being truthful. "If people want people in the Dil who have never done anything like I have done, well, then youre not going to get many people in the Dil. "Now, there are plenty of people in the Dil who wont admit it, but sorry if the truth hurts," he told RT. Pressed on whether he was saying fellow TDs were taking drugs, Mr Flanagan said: "It would be highly unlikely that they wouldnt have at some stage." The TD was reacting to criticism after he revealed the full extent of his drug use in the past. Cop wants drugs legalized

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

Retired police Capt. Peter Christ said that his mission to legalize drugs should not be mistaken as an endorsement to use them. Christ, who retired as a police captain in 1989 after a 20-year career enforcing drug laws, insists that the war on drugs can never be won and is doing more harm than good. Christ wants to see all drugs legalized - and regulated. "That doesn't mean I condone using them," he said. "They're all terrible, and if I could convince people not to use them, any of them, I would. But I can't. People are going to do what they want, regardless of whether drugs are legal. What we're talking about is making drugs legal, and then regulating them. Prohibition doesn't work. We've already seen that." Christ, a New York resident, is traveling across the state, with scheduled stops in Warren, Youngstown and Cleveland, to explain his position. On Tuesday, he will address the issue at 7 a.m. at Lake Vista of Cortland, 303 N. Mecca St., Cortland. The free presentation will be in the Park Place Heron Dining Room on the second floor. "The drug war does more harm than good," Christ said. "We're not winning. We … Continue reading

Courses involving tobacco, alcohol and drugs called off, censored at Reed College

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

In the early part of the 20th century, radical progressive pioneer Carrie Nation became notorious for fighting the scourge of alcohol by walking into saloons with a hatchet and destroying bottles of liquor. In 2013, the president of small, ultra-progressive Reed College in Portland, Oregon has canceled two classes and forced the alteration of two others over fears that students could be exposed to alcohol, ordinary tobacco or information about the safe use of illegal drugs. The classes at issue are part of Paideia, a unique program at Reed that allows students, staff and alumni to organize and teach short, free, non-credit courses on any topic. Paideia takes place on campus the week before each spring semester starts. (RELATED OPINION: Time to end the drug war) Current student Austin Weisgrau was planning to teach one of the courses, Kombucha and Other Fermentation Basics, reports The Quest, Reeds independent student newspaper. The class was going to cover brewing kombucha a trendy swill made of yeast and live bacteria as well as the fundamentals of fermenting sauerkraut and alcoholic drinks. About a week before the class was slated to begin, Weisgrau received an email informing him that the private schools president, John … Continue reading

Growth factor aids stem cell regeneration after radiation damage

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

Feb. 3, 2013 Epidermal growth factor has been found to speed the recovery of blood-making stem cells after exposure to radiation, according to Duke Medicine researchers. The finding could open new options for treating cancer patients and victims of dirty bombs or nuclear disasters. Reported in the Feb. 3, 2013, issue of the journal Nature Medicine, the researchers explored what had first appeared to be an anomaly among certain genetically modified mice with an abundance of epidermal growth factor in their bone marrow. The mice were protected from radiation damage, and the researchers questioned how this occurred. "Epidermal growth factor was not known to stimulate hematopoiesis, which is the formation of blood components derived from hematopoietic stem cells," said senior author John Chute, M.D., a professor of medicine and professor of pharmacology and cancer biology at Duke University. "However, our studies demonstrate that the epidermal growth promotes hematopoietic stem cell growth and regeneration after injury." Hematopoietic stem cells, which constantly churn out new blood and immune cells, are highly sensitive to radiation damage. Protecting these cells or improving their regeneration after injury could benefit patients who are undergoing bone marrow transplantation, plus others who suffer radiation injury from accidental environmental … Continue reading
