FDA Challenges Stem Cell Companies As Patients Run Out Of Time

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

Scientists have seen promise in the potential of stem cells, but not everyone agrees stem cell replacement therapy is ready for prime time. Americans seeking stem cell replacement therapy hope the process can heal them of myriad diseases, and a 2011 report by the Baker Institute estimated the industry could bring in $16 billion in revenue by 2020. But the Food and Drug Administration has expressed concerns. The agency sued to stop treatments at a Regenerative Sciences clinic in Colorado and closed the lab of another company, Celltex Therapeutics, in Texas. While patients in dire situations are willing to try the therapy (and pay the hefty costs), there's concern the research doesn't support broad practice just yet. Running Out Of Options SammyJo Wilkinson remembers the day 18 years ago when she suddenly couldn't stand. She was a young, ambitious computer programmer, launching an Internet startup. Her doctor told her it was secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. Now, at 48, Wilkinson is in a wheelchair. She's tried every available FDA-approved drug and two experimental therapies, including a two-year course of chemotherapy. Nothing worked. Over time, she started researching adult stem cell replacement, but it was available only abroad. The U.S. opened its … Continue reading

Kansas social worker uneasy with KanCare's handling of brain cases

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2013

Social worker Gayle Taylor is part of a care provider network for a Kansas man who suffered a traumatic brain injury and compounds his predicament by engaging in substance abuse. In mid-January, Taylor said she arrived at the Medicaid client's home to find him bleeding from an arm wound. He apparently didn't grasp how or where to get help and languished for five days without treatment. Gov. Sam Brownback had turned over the state's $3.2 billion Medicaid program two weeks earlier to United HealthCare, Sunflower State Health Plan and Amerigroup companies to operate a managed-care system designed to improve care for 380,000 Kansans and save the state an estimated $1 billion over five years. Taylor, who owns Burlington-based Therapy Services, related snippets of her client's situation during a Statehouse rally and a subsequent interview. "What I'm so afraid of is, without proper care, people are either going to end up dead, homeless, in jail or in a nursing home. They will lose their independence,"she said. Kari Bruffett, director of the division of health care finance at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, looked into the situation during the past week and concluded Taylor's client was receiving all services he … Continue reading

According to Rick, the cause could be a combination of phyto-estrogens in our environment and food, lack of competitiveness and exercise or some other factor that hasn't yet been accounted for. This may explain the recent rise in the popularity of Hormone Replacement Therapy Clinics across the nation, where Men go to boost their testosterone levels through injections, creams and hormone boosting pills in an effort to increase circulating testosterone levels. Lack of Energy and a flagging sex drive? Testosterone therapy may be the answer, find out of you need the Superman jab

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2013

By David Harrison PUBLISHED: 17:00 EST, 2 February 2013 | UPDATED: 17:12 EST, 2 February 2013 Peter Robertson felt, in his own words, wiped out. Too many boozy lunches, late nights and early starts had left the 39-year-old City banker lethargic and irritable. Entertaining clients had taken its toll on his waist. He was sleeping badly and underperforming at work. To make matters worse, Peters libido was suffering. When he was willing, he often found himself to put it bluntly unable. His girlfriend had left him and his sex life was almost non-existent. I knew I had to do something, says Peter, who played rugby at college. I felt like my masculinity was slipping away. Jab away: Testosterone replacement therapy can help you release your inner Superman His research led him to websites full of other men complaining of similar problems and he found an answer: testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), dubbed by some the Superman jab. There were claims of lacklustre energy levels transformed, sex lives boosted, weight loss and muscle gain. So last February Peter booked an appointment with a private doctor in Londons Harley Street who specialises in such treatments. After blood tests, he was told he was … Continue reading

'Superman jab' helps boost libido in men

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2013

London, February 3(ANI): Increasing number of men who are suffering from low testosterone are going for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), dubbed by some as 'the Superman jab,' to boost their sex life. Doctors who specialize in such treatments prescribe their patients to rub the testosterone gel into their shoulders and supplement his natural levels of the hormone. There were claims of lacklustre energy levels transformed, sex lives boosted, weight loss and muscle gain from users. Low testosterone levels are associated with older men - up to 15 per cent of males over 50 are estimated to have low 'T'. But there are reports of a growing number of younger men being diagnosed with low testosterone. "The average age of my patients used to be about 50. Now it's closer to 40 and my youngest patients are in their 20s," the Daily Mail quoted Dr Malcolm Curruthers, who runs a private practice specialising in TRT, as saying. But many other experts have warned that that if testosterone medication is given in the wrong circumstances, it can have horrific side effects. At the core of the debate is a grey area when it comes to medically defining low testosterone. Levels are assessed … Continue reading
