Sometimes symptoms are present in the early hours of the morning and reduce as the day progresses. However, in spite of its common name, it can occur at any time of the day. For most women it may stop around the 12th week of pregnancy. Related to increased estrogen levels, a similar form of nausea is also seen in some women who use hormonal contraception or hormone replacement therapy. The nausea can be mild or induce actual vomiting, however, not severe enough to cause metabolic derangement. In more severe cases, vomiting may cause dehydration, weight loss, alkalosis and hypokalemia. This condition is known as hyperemesis gravidarum and occurs in about 1% of all pregnancies. Analyst: Stem cell agency reforms fall short

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2013

With little money and time left to repair its legacy, California's controversial stem cell agency is falling short in its response to a federal committee's recommendations for an overhaul, the committee's chair said Thursday. The stem cell agency's reform plan does not go far enough to fix all that has been chipping away at the agency's credibility, said Harold Shapiro, chair of the Institute of Medicine committee hired to evaluate the agency. "There certainly is a gap between what we recommended and what they responded with," said Shapiro, president emeritus at Princeton University. "I wish they had moved closer to our recommendations." The committee presented sweeping recommendations in its December report, emphasizing the need for new blood on a governing board that has been plagued by the appearance of conflicts of interest, cronyism and sluggishness in getting stem-cell products to market. Time is of the essence, Shapiro said, noting that the stem cell agency risks running out of funding soon and, by 2017, must have in place a self-sustaining financial formula to replace its bond allocations. The CIRM has just $859 million remaining from the pot of $3 billion voters approved by passing Proposition 71 in 2004. Californians embraced the … Continue reading

John Martignetti, MD, PhD, and Olga Camacho-Vanegas, PhD, Awarded Grant from Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2013

Two cancer genetics researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have received a grant from the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative to support promising research on a genetic mutation in hereditary bone cancer called osteosarcoma. New York, NY (PRWEB) February 01, 2013 John Martignetti, MD, PhD and Olga Camacho-Vanegas, PhD discovered that mutations in newly described and previously unknown forms of the methylthioadenosine phosphorylase (MTAP) gene result in hereditary osteosarcoma and Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma (MFH)two rare bone cancers that usually affect children, adolescents and young adults. Osteosarcoma and MFH are treated with a combination of aggressive therapies, but a significant number of patients deal with disease relapse and progression. With support from the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative Grant, the scientists hope to find out why MTAP mutations result in cancer and how common they are, then evaluate MTAP as a therapeutic target. Our goal is to evaluate how common MTAP mutations are in bone cancer and determine their therapeutic relevance, said Dr. Martignetti, who is Associate Professor of Genetics and Genomics Sciences; Oncological Sciences; and Pediatrics at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai. We are honored to be recognized by the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, … Continue reading
