Users increasingly use Internet to buy drugs: EU report

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2013

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Virtually any kind of illegal drug can be bought on the Internet and delivered by post to users who no longer need to make direct contact with dealers, an EU study published on Thursday said. It gave no statistics on online drug sales, which are normally conducted on so-called "darknets", or anonymous computer networks. The report, compiled by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and Europol, the pan-European police agency, said increased globalization and communication technology made it harder to track drug routes. "Practically any type of drug can be bought on the Internet," Europol director Rob Wainwright told a briefing. "The consumers may feel that it is 'cleaner' to buy drugs without any direct contact with the drug dealer." These drugs are being moved through legitimate forms of commercial transportation - containers, aircraft and postal services, all making the drugs harder to intercept. EMCDDA director Wolfgang Goetz said drug users' behavior was also changing. "Patterns of drug use have become more fluid, with consumers often using multiple substances or substituting one drug for another," Goetz said. NORTHWEST EUROPE A MAJOR CONCERN Europol's Wainwright said drug trafficking was the main activity of organized … Continue reading

State attorney general speaks about synthetic drugs

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2013

Florida State Attorney Pam Bondi speaks during a community meeting about the dangers of synthetic drugs at the Marion County Sheriff's office in Ocala, FL. Bondi and number of community law enforcement spoke about efforts to combat the problems in our area and state. OCALA Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi addressed members of the community and local law enforcement officials Friday about the dangers of synthetic drugs, which she said are more lethal than cocaine. Bondi was the guest speaker at the event held at the Marion County Sheriff's Office Multi-Purpose conference room, which was attended by about 200 people. She was introduced by Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn. Bondi said she has been traveling throughout the state to promote awareness and education about deadly synthetic drugs. The drugs often are sold as bath salts and synthetic marijuana. The packaging often targets a younger demographic. To woo young children, teenagers and young adults, Bondi said, the manufacturers use popular characters, like Scooby Doo. You have to be vigilant, she said. Bondi said the majority of emergency room trips related to the drugs are made by people between the ages of 12 and 29. She said the drugs, which come from Asia … Continue reading

NRI-drugs mafia nexus: ED raids point to Rs.200 crore hawala ring

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2013

Jalandhar (Punjab), Feb 1 (IANS) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has stepped up its probe into the nexus between drugs mafia, NRIs and business houses in Punjab in the drugs trade, officials said Friday, adding that the scam could involve over Rs.200 crore of hawala money. Officials of the ED Friday raided a foreign exchange agency in Jalandhar and a jeweller in Ludhiana in this connection. The scam could involve hawala (illegally transmitted remittances) money worth over Rs.200 crore, ED sources told IANS. ED assistant director Niranjan Singh also told IANS that the alleged nexus between the drug mafia, NRIs and business houses was turning out to be much bigger than earlier expected. The drugs mafia was manufacturing drug intoxicant 'Ice', which is in demand among youth in Canada and countries in Europe, from methamphetamine salt which is believed to be easily available and cheaper in Punjab. Police sources here say that the drug, also known as 'Speed', was being smuggled to other countries from here and the payment was coming through the hawala transactions. The ED has also put officials of some airlines, operating from Amritsar international airport, under the scanner. The ED, which had conducted raids at nearly 20 … Continue reading

Thieves Target Open Houses for Drugs

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2013

During an open house, sellers typically secure valuables like jewelry, electronics and personal information, but locking up medicine cabinets may be next on the list. Thieves posing as potential home buyers have targeted prescription drugs while attending open houses in San Diego, according to a local realtors' group - and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration confirms drugs appear to be entering the black market in that way. "A lot of times the realtor is alone in the house and the bad guys will go in pairs," said Kevin Burke, who is on the board of directors of the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors. "One will engage with the agent as the other goes through the house." The bandits will then make their way into the master bedroom bathrooms, getting into the medicine cabinets, said Burke. "Stealing drugs from open houses is indeed a technique drug thieves use to obtain controlled substance prescription drugs," said Barbara Carreno of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Opioid painkillers, ADHD drugs, anti-anxiety drugs and muscle relaxants such as Xanax and Valium are among those stolen during these kinds of thefts, said Carreno. The DEA has enforcement groups called "tactical diversion squads" (TDS) that include special … Continue reading
