Erectile dysfunction signals heart troubles: study

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2013

Erectile dysfunction might signal more than a need for the little purple pill, researchers said Tuesday in a study showing a link with heart disease and early death. The Australian study -- the world's largest investigating links between erection problems and heart disease -- suggested erection problems could act as a warning sign of more serious health issues. "The risks of future heart disease and premature death increased steadily with severity of erectile dysfunction," whether or not there was a history of cardiovascular disease, study director Emily Banks said. Previous studies had found ties between severe erection problems and heart attacks and strokes, but this study was the first to also include mild and moderately severe erection problems. "These results tell us that every man who is suffering from any degree of erectile dysfunction should be seeking medical assistance as early as possible and also insisting on a heart health check by their GP at the same time," said Rob Grenfell, Cardiovascular Health director at Australia's Heart Foundation. The study, published this week in the "PLOS Medicine" journal, followed 95,000 men aged 45 and older for two to three years. The men responded to a survey on their health and … Continue reading

Erectile dysfunction may increase a man's heart woes

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2013

By Rachael Rettner MyHealthNewsDaily The more severe a man's erectile dysfunction is, the greater his risk of being hospitalized for heart problems, a new Australian study finds. Among men in the study who had no history of heart disease, those with moderate erectile dysfunction (ED) were 23 percent more likely to be hospitalized for a cardiovascular problem, such as a heart attack, during a two-year period compared to men who did not have ED. And those with severe ED were 35 percent more likely to be hospitalized for cardiovascular problems than those without ED. Men who already had heart problems and severe erectile dysfunction at the study's start were 64 percent more likely to be hospitalized for another heart problem during the study period compared to men without ED. The results held even after the researchers accounted for factors that might increase the risk of heart problems, such as age, smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity. The findings agree with previous studies that have linked erectile dysfunction to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. ReNeuron Group edges further in stem cell therapy research for stroke patients

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2013

LONDON (ShareCast) - ReNeuron Group received the green light to complete the final stages of first phase safety testing of its ReN001 stem cell therapy for disabled stroke patients in Scotland, the company announced Tuesday. The ReN001 stem cell therapy was being administered in ascending doses to a total of 12 stroke patients who have been left disabled by an ischaemic stroke, the most common form of the condition. ReNeuron is now set to proceed with dosing the last three patients after getting clearance from the Data Safety Monitoring Board which reviewed the study. The first of the three patients was treated with ReN001 and discharged from hospital. The remaining two are scheduled to be treated this March. Last year, interim data from the first five patients treated in the study were presented by the Glasgow clinical team. Sustained reductions in neurological impairment and spasticity were observed in all patients compared with their stable pre-treatment baseline performance. Further and longer term data from the study are expected to be presented in scientific conference later this year. The company has submitted an application to the UK regulatory authority to commence a multi-site phase two clinical trial to examine the efficacy of … Continue reading

Study shows adult prescriptions not always helpful for children’s migraines

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2013

A drug-free placebo pill prevents migraines in children and teens just as well as most headache medicines, according to a new study. Researchers, whose study was published in JAMA Pediatrics, found that only two drugs known to help migraine-plagued adults reduced the frequency of childrens headaches better than a placebo. Even in those cases the effect was small a difference of less than one headache per month compared to the dummy pills. According to data from the Cleveland Clinic, about 2 per cent of young children and 7 to 10 per cent of older children and teenagers up to age 15 get migraines. No drugs have been rigorously tested and approved for preventing migraines in children, so doctors have to rely on medicine for adults, experts said. All the drugs in our analysis have been found effective in adults with migraine headaches, but few were beneficial among children, wrote study leader Jeffrey Jackson from the medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and colleagues. This suggests there may be something different about pediatric migraines or that the response to treatment differs between children and adults. In the study, Jackson and his colleagues looked at 21 trials comparing headache drugs to each … Continue reading

Should I Take Statin Drugs For Elevated Cholesterol? Are There Side Effects? – Video

Should I Take Statin Drugs For Elevated Cholesterol? Are There Side Effects? http://www.naturalfoodsdiet.org Today I want to speak to the multitudes of people out there that have been put on statin drugs for elevated cholesterol. If you have been watching my videos, you know that the only groups that shown a clear mortality benefit in randomized clinical trials are men under 70 with documented coronary artery disease (had a heart attack) and for men that smoke that have an elevated CRP. But doctors in the USA put almost all patients with high cholesterol on these drugs, even though there is questionable mortality benefit. In the United Kingdom there is a proposal to put ALL men over 50 and women over 60 on statins. So what's the harm you ask? One harm is increased mortality that shows up in some studies; like cancer and suicides. There are also the common side effects of memory problems and muscle pain. Please leave a comment below this video and we will be sure to respond! DrugRisk Update: Court Allows Charges of Prior Fraud Into Pradaxa Lawsuit

The DrugRisk Resource Center is the Webs largest source for information on prescription drug warnings, side effects and legal news. Visit http://www.DrugRisk.com Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 30, 2013 The goal of DrugRisk is to improve patient safety through education of the latest drug warnings, recalls, studies and litigation news. In many cases, patients follow litigation to learn more about a drug theyre taking and what questions to ask their doctor, explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer. The resource center previously added a report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices which ranked anticoagulants like Pradaxa among the highest risk outpatient drugs. The Institute also found that hemorrhage cases submitted to the FDA show bleeding from Pradaxa was nearly 5 times as likely to result in death than with warfarin.* Reports show that experts still disagree about the safety of Pradaxa and its bleeding risks. While there has been no official Pradaxa recall, the FDA recently issued an update that the drug carries the same risks as warfarin.** However, the Americal College of Cardiology has warned that Pradaxa use can significantly increase the risk of bleeding complications compared to warfarin.*** DrugRisk has learned that, due to the number of patients filing a … Continue reading

Drug reduces enlarged prostate with few side effects

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2013

Relief from the constant call of nature is the aim of a new drug, tested in rats, which can shrink an enlarged prostate and is likely to have few side effects. By the age of 60 an estimated 70 per cent of men have prostate enlargement. Treatment involves surgery or drugs that block testosterone, a hormone that drives unwanted growth. Side effects can include loss of libido and erectile dysfunction. The new drug, RC-3940-II, developed by Andrew Schally of the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Florida and colleagues works by blocking gastrin-releasing peptide another potent growth factor. In rats, a six-week treatment shrank prostates by 18 per cent. It also shrank human prostate cells by 21 per cent. Importantly, fewer side effects are likely as testosterone pathways are avoided.
